In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

In the center if this wonderful square is the large statue of empress maria theresa, the most important monument from the habsburger constructed by kaspar von zumbusch and opened in 1888. over 19 m high and 44 tons heavy, the empress greets the people with her right hand and in the keft she holds a roll. She is surrounded by horseman statues of her generals. It is a world cultural heritage.

Quite a nice monument in the middle of the Maria-Theresien Square. It is located in between the two museums on either side.
There are 4 horsemen on the corners and a plaque and statue on each side. The statue itself faces towards the Burgator and Hofburg.
There is just a lot of things to see here as you walk around it, with all the different statues.

Maybe my favourite square in Vienna. Very nice garden/park, detailed monument in middle and two identical buildings on both sides of square. Nothing much to say, and even though everybody is taking out cellphones from pockets to take some photo, it's better to look with eyes than camera

Empress Maria Theresa (1717 - 1780) ruled the Habsburg territories from 1740 to 1780. She was the only woman to hold the position in her own right. She also gave birth to 16 children.
The monument with its base covers an area of 632 square metres and is 19.36 metres high. It is built from a mix of granite (base and pedestals), serpentinite (columns) and bronze (statues). The six metre high bronze statue of the monarch, seated on her throne, sits atop of the monument. The Monarch has in her left hand a scepter and the document that enabled her as a woman to rule the Habsburg territories whilst her right hand is extended greeting the people. On the cornice around the throne sit four females figures representing justice, strength, mildness and wisdom.
The monument is a mass of statues and reliefs with the four sides of the plinth featuring groups of personalities representing her advisors, her administration, the military and the arts and sciences (including reliefs of Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Mozart).
On the diagonal axes of the base there are four statues of Field Marshalls from that time.
The monument was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I and was unveiled in 1888.
Hard to miss if visiting the Art History Museum or the Natural History Museum.

The Empress Maria Theresia monument, unveiled in 1888, stands in the center of the square with the Natural history museum and the Art history museum. The huge monument with the empress towers over four sets of statues, each representing a facet of her rule. Maria Theresia sits on a throne at the top of the monument with hand outstretched. Below her, the four riders are all military commanders. Among the famous people found on the monument is Mozart and Haydn.
This is one of the most amazing monuments and definitely worth spending time here. A photographers dream!

It is located in the middle of the square between the Vienna Natural History Museum and the Kunsthistorisches Museum. It is a large two-story statue (monument). On the second floor is a seated statue of Maria Theresa. Below are horses and people who appear to be scholars (probably famous people, but I don't know them at all). It is a splendid statue that expresses the dignity of the queen.

In Vienna across the street from the entrance to the Heldenplatz - in the Maria Theresa square you shall find the monument commemorating the Archduchess of Austria and one of the most "famous" Habsburg rulers - Maria Theresia.
The monument is impressive - with the statues as the bottom pedestal and the Archduchess sitting on her throne above several meters high.
When we were visiting in November 2023 - the evening lighting wasn't the best - still it was worth a stop for a pic ....
When you are in Vienna for sure you will get to this square when you stroll in the Hofburg so is just a matter of stopping for a few minutes to take a picture and stroll on.

This monument stands in tribute to Maria Teresa, who ascended to the Austrian throne through the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713 that was ultimately ignored by its signatories. Something which led to wars and loss of territory for Austria.
The monument features topped with a sculpture of the eponymous empress. Below her on the pedestal are female allegorical figures of the four cardinal virtues, prudence, temperance, fortitude and justice. Below the virtues at each corner of the pedestal are politicians and advisors to the empress.
The monument is well … monumental, and definitely worth a look if in the area.

The monarch from the house of Habsburg - Maria Theresia one of the most influential rulers in Europe and definitely one of the most important historical figure of her times. (this ain't no history lesson but I will drop in a few trivia - for the sake of fun).
Due to law in Austria the Emperor could only be a male - so the legislators actually modified the law (because they ran out of male ares to the throne of the Habsburg empire. ) so she could ascend to the throne, but she never had the title of "Emperor" or "Empress" - she only got crowned as the Queen of Hungary - so she had the title of Archduchess of Austria.
Se got 16 children - yes 16 - and the majority made it to adulthood, some ending very tragically - Marie Antoinette , daughter of Maria Theresa, got publicly executed in 1793 during the french revolution (she got guillotined).
History stops there - look it up you are interested.
Back to statue - Maria is sitting on her throne - almost no representation of her standing up can be found since she was very short - at the top of the statuary group. For those of you into history is definitely a stop as you visit the Hofburg close by and for those into arts for sure this is an interesting stop.
Overall - it is one of the landmarks in this city full of landmarks, enjoy.
