“You have to have been there to understand,” sings the local troubadour, Terje Nilsen, describing Mjelle in a song. In the summer, many excursions end at Mjelle, both weekends and weekdays. You don’t have to be a child to collect shells or build sand castles, or to enjoy a good ball game. Bring firewood and cooking equipment if you want to barbecue.

"Where is your Mjelle?" is a phrase in a Norwegian song, meaning "where is your paradise?". And that is exactly what this place is. Red`ish sand, sheep walking around, sand bottom beach, small cliffs to dive from if you`re tough enough to dip into arctic water. 30 minutes drive from Bodø and approx 15 minutes walk from the parking spot.

This beautiful beach is about an hour's drive from Bodo and well worth a visit. At the end of the road is a small parking area with a couple of picnic benches and a fairly basic toilet block, but the view is lovely. We visited on a cold but sunny day when there were only a few others - mostly... More

calm and meditative place, in contact with you inner self, this could be the place you want to go back to, in order to reset your body and mind...and also experience the close encounters for the largest eagle in the North

You need a car to get there (or hike a while from the busstop) but you get something in return. Great sandy beaches in a special environment. I was here on a day when it was 26C and swimming was mandatory. The water was ice cold, but cristal clear and it was amazing. Despite the great weather only a few... More

A Norwegian singer-songwriter has made this beach famous in a much played recording, and we were curious to check it out ! So was a lot of other people, so the whole area was teeming with people hiking. It was quite nice, but I've seen more spectacular beaches in the north of Norway and far less crowded. The thing I... This amazing area is a must if you are visiting Bodø. The area is one of the most beautiful area close to Bodø! Mjeldevika (Mjelle beach) is very beautiful but the most scenic area is Auvika beach and Hovdsundet south west of Mjeldevika (see my attached photos and you will understand). It’s hard to believe that the photogenic Hovdsundet is... More

Mjelle is a beach you can go to when the weather is grey, and enjoy having a beautiful beach for yourself, sit down and enjoy the silence. Perfect for walking or for meditation. Summertime, when the weather is fine, this is the place to bring family to go swimming, barbecue, volleyball, football, badminton. Going here around midnight when the weather... More
