Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a fascinating relic from WWII and it is in amazing condition after almost 80 years exposed to the elements. I am a history nerd, so this attraction was interesting and wonderous to see firsthand, but, I realize that for some, it may not be as engaging for two hours.

I do not know why the suggested duration is under 1 hour because the Adolf kanon is located on an active military base and requires a guided escort and administrative security procedures. Therefore the duration of this activity is exactly 2 hours. One cannot stay longer, one cannot leave early (because an escort is required).

I knew that it is the largest land-based gun in the world, but the size of it up close is astounding. It was astounding that humans made such an advanced piece of engineering. It was astounding how something so massive was moved to this site, by ship, by wagon, by crane. And the long list of stats was also astounding (range, rate of fire, muzzle velocity, weight of the shells). I was blown away.

For those that might be sensitive to such things, it is a Nazi built gun, and there are a lot of Nazi artifacts, signs in German, and other historic vestiges of the german builders in the structure. So be prepared. Also, be aware that the tour requires some stair climbing or squeezing through hatches, if you want to see everything.

For two hours, we were allowed to explore, photograph, and ask questions to our hearts content. Our guides were knowledgeable. I thought it was well worth the cost of admission.

Perfect example of German design quality this time creating a gun with attitude "bigger is better". Everything is planned and created for the systematic shooting process. This museum has kept everything in very good shape for next generations to remind scary times during the war both in Norway and Germany. The Guide really knew the gun, it's purpose and loading process. He could almost shoot with it :-).

Recommend visiting also in similar sites: 38 cm cannon in Møvik Kristiansand and Tirpitz Museum in Alta.

The 16” single barrel gun is a very unusual tourist attraction on the Trondenes peninsula near the northern Norway town of Harstad. The gun has been extremely well restored and maintained by local volunteers. The magazine and interior of the gun turret serves as a small museum and the associated scenery is magnificent. Be advised that the gun is located within a Norwegian naval base and I visited as part of a coach excursion with a local guide. Identity (for example our passport) has to be provided at the base security guard at the main entrance. Furthermore, photography of any kind is strictly prohibited whilst on transit through the base to the gun, and camera’s and devices will be confiscated if the rule is broken. Sailors will escort the visiting group to ensure compliance and security. You can however take pictures inside the gun and in the immediate vicinity of the gun. However, it is a must for any military history buff and tourist visiting Harstad which has only a few tourist attractions.

The guided tour with busride included lasted more than two hours. Mostly because he talked Norwegian and English together. The guide was good. We got to see the bunkers , german equipment and under the battery as well as inside. It is HUGE. Beyond imagination. No wonder Hitler named them Adolf. Kids had the opportunity climbing inside the barrel.

It is the only remaining large German cannon from the 2nd Wold War no less than the entire battery of four cannons remains intact and even the only place in Europe where a complete battery from the German Atlantic Wall still exists. I think a visit provides good insight and understanding of the advanced German weaponry of the age. The Germans only fired one test with the cannon before the surrender to the Norwegian. The battery was last fired in 1957 and formally decommissioned in 1964. Today in good condition and can actually be fired.
The cannon was designed in 1934 and originally intended for the early H-class battleships. The gun's barrel is approximately 20 metres long and could be elevated to 52 degrees, and with the special 600 kilograms long range shell called the "Adolf-she'll" giving it a range of 56 kilometers and fired at a speed of 1,050 meters per second and the shell was in the air for over two minutes, and had a maximum trajectory ceiling of 21,800 meters. It is said that the rate of fire for the weapon was around 2 rounds per minute. Much of the heavy building work was done by Soviet Russian prisoners of war.

This guided attraction is a must for people interested in war history. The guns are extremely well kept and really interesting to study. Also the guide certainly knows his business - he is a retired commander! My wife and 17 year old daughter came along reluctantly, but to their own surprise they quickly became interested during the tour.

We had a special visit arranged which allowed us to see bit more then the normal public tour but none the less, the public areas are more then worth it! The shear scale of this gun is seriously impressive and the lower rooms hold a fascinating collection of artifacts and information about both this gun battery and the others built around Norway during WW2. The views are also stunning from the surface :)
Make sure you stop at the church which you pass on the way up to the meeting point (it's on a bend down by the coast). Behind the church are the remains of the soviet forced labour camp who built the gun battery and a memorial to those who didn't survive.

If you are in the area, this is a piece of Norwegian history you have to look in to. This is a reminder for all of us, that we have to protect the freedom we have fought for.

The mere size of the Adolfs 40.6 cm bore and 1040kg "projectile" amazes you. Last time if fired was in 1957, distance 38000 meters - the cold lump of cast iron hit within 100m of the target. The calculations based on old German ballistic data established for this particular gun.

Travelled 80 km with car+ferry just to face closed gate and to realise that 1 minute late means no admission. We ve been at the gate 16:31 and contacted tourist office 16:34. They coldly replied that proper time for the visit is 16:30. Which is a shame, because it is nearly impossible to arrive in time if you take Flesnes-Refnes ferry.
