This is not an aurora chase. It was a large coach that parked along side 6 other large coaches. Obviously they cannot guarantee activity but they went to one place for opening and stayed put even though clouds thickened where we were. When we first entered the bus we had strict instructions as to how to use the toilet, all individuals were instructed to seat themselves for aim accuracy. No gender bias here. We were then told no drink or food allowed on the bus. Then while our guide was very helpful with camera settings we were told that all professional photographs taken by him would be at a cost of 240kr each. Please save your money and pick a smaller tour.

Felt like the once in a lifetime bucket list type of experience we wanted. Fire, melted marshmallows and hot chocolate by the sea were highly appreciated by the children.

1500 NOK is a lot of money for a bustrip, especially if you don't get to see anything. Chances to see the northern light were small the evening of our booking, as I'd found out in an app already. We'd booked the day before, so there was no way to cancel. And the tour was going on, as apparently the guides would know where to go... even to Finland if necessary. The tour started with a depressive speech from the guide telling us to don't keep out hopes up as it would be very challenging to spot any northern lights this night. Next was an instruction for people who don't know how their camera or phone works and some stuff about the guides taking pictures of you and if you wanted them you had to buy them.

We drove for 1 hour and 45 minutus to the little beach of Grunnfjord and were let out of the bus... for two hours to stare at a grey sky. There was a hot water tank so serve instant coca of coffee and some cookies. After two hours we were moved to another place. This time a parking in Håkøybotn. It would be 'a miracle' if we'd seen anything here, the guide told us, but the tour had to last til 01.00 so we were basically dropped here to complete the time.

The tour starts at 18:00 and ends at 01:00. Even if the chances to see the northern light are practically zero... I looked for another tour, which was sold out, but the operator recommended me to use my rental car, the Aurora app and a website for weather/cloud conditions. 3 minutes of explanation on how to combine the info from the app and clouds map and you're ready to go. A 4WD rental car for 24 hours costs less than 1 ticket for the bustrip, and you can take up to three people with you. It's more fun, more adventure, and way more exciting. And yes, while driving around with our tools we managed to find the northern light.

I understand the northern light is a natural phenomenon so I won't hold it against anyone that we didn't see it during the tour. But if you claim to be professional experts on the phenomenon, just be honest about the chances and cancel a tour if you expect there's nothing to be seen, issue a refund and avoid disappointment.

Kudos to the sales staff who sold us this trip after much hesitation after 4 previously failed attempts with other companies. They chose the day best to go during our stay in Tromsø. EPIC failure, so utterly disappointing. Don’t waste your money like I did, hire a car and drive yourself somewhere, you’ll have more luck. Guide was average at best, didn’t know when to be quiet and talked about the same thing on loop way too long.

A great evening and we luckily got the northern lights after a long wait.
Mirko (Miracle or Marco Polo) was funny and an informative guide and also set expectations. He made the journey less boring (although I do admit to napping half way through).
I thought his knowledge on lights and instructions on how to use camera and phones to capture the lights were clear and to the point.
We waited about 3 hours for the lights to appear but when it did Mirko was great with taking the pics and directing us. For those 3 hours I recommend you bring your own fun… make snow angels, dance practice your photo skills… Hot chocolate (basic) and cookies (quite nice) were served. On board toilets were handy but did not use them. On the way back we did stop off quickly as more lights appeared which I thought was great for them to do as they did not have to. It was late but Mirko wanted to get the best experience for us! A lovely finish to the evening! Shout out to Rebeca (guide) and Adrian (bus driver).

Your guides were fantastic. Huge thank you to Luig and Marek for an informative, interesting and successful Northern light hunt. Absolutely the opposite experience to a review that was posted this week.

We are so glad we did this at the beginning of our stay as it equipped us with the skills to take photos on whichever tech we had,(android) successfully. Marek gave us lots of info which was succinct and key to our success.

Marek also managed our expectations regarding whether the aurora might appear, explaining in detail what natural phenomenon need to happen for lights to appear. They vary from night to night and in different locations. They use their experience and information from many sources to predict, not guarantee, where the lights are likely to be seen. We were driven for 2.5 hours each way to get clear skies, which we truly appreciated. They only appeared very late, about 20 minutes before we were due to leave. Be realistic though, some nights you just don't get them as strong as you want or the sky isn't quite clear enough. We were lucky and we went on the 6th Feb 23. If you want to see their success rate, check out their photos on Northernshots.com. We shall purchase ours as a keepsake of a memorable tour.

The bus was pristine. I don't mind ground rules on what we can and can't do on the bus, their only job is to maximise the chances of seeing the Northern lights, not to clear up after us. Toilet on the bus was reassuring and useful.

Booking conditions and prices of photos are clear at the outset and there is no compulsion to buy any. Marek had the patience of a saint taking professional photos of us all ;-)

In summary;-
This tour gives you the very best opportunity to see and photo northern lights.
Northern lights are not guaranteed
Northern lights don't necessarily look like the photos in real life. Cameras can see the colours better.
Dress very warm and prepare for a long night!

Our tour started late as they had not allocated the correct number of people per bus - not a great start and it was a sign of things to come …

We headed to Sommaroy as this was apparently a good location. We got the feeling that this was a convenient location for the tour operator rather than a good location to see the lights. The location was next to a small town with lots of cars and trucks passing by. This meant we didn’t get complete darkness which we would expect to be a pre requisite for a decent ‘chase’ (cars would have their headlights on which lit up the whole area).

Our guides seemed a bit helpless. Captain Luis was more worried about the upholstery of his bus (or ‘ship’ as he called it) than portraying any type of hospitality to his guests. Our other guide gave us a lecture on camera settings on the way out to the lights which would have been helpful if it wasn’t 30 mins long.

Once we arrived at the lights we were offered portraits captured by our guide which we could purchase after the tour - considering the cost of the tour, we would have expected the portrait shots to be included within the tour price (it was included in another tour we did with a different company).

We were able to see faint lights, but given the location we do not think this was the best place for viewing. We understand there is an element of chance or luck being able to see the lights (which is out of the operator’s control). However, making people feel excited and welcome about the experience (when this is a bucket list item for a lot of people) is well within the control of the operator and guides - Northern Shots completely failed in this regard, and the whole experience felt a bit like money grab.

Overall, this tour was really an overpriced (£100) hot chocolate. We had a far better experience the night before with another company operating in the area.

For those on the quest for the Northern Lights, I highly recommend this tour as the top choice. The primary aim is to locate a clear sky, making it possible to enjoy the experience even in snowy Tromsø. The tour kicks off from their office, providing a comfortable spot for check-in before departure. The desk team and guides guide you to your bus, and the presence of onboard toilets was a definite plus. Witnessing the mesmerizing northern lights was complemented by informative lessons on capturing them through photography. If you own a camera, be sure to bring it along! Notably, this tour stands out as one of the most cost-effective options available. I suggest giving it a try.

When we arrived my booking had been inadvertently cancelled - could have spelled disaster but the guys were nice and calm confirming they had 3 spaces! The coaches are new, clean with a toilet. Mother nature did keep us waiting, but we were warned to be patient. A hot chocolate and several cookies later and almost when we had given up hope the lights appeared from nowhere for about half an hour. It was truly spectacular and surpassed all my expectations - no words ❤️ Thankfully the guys were happy to hang on to give us the best chance of seeing them - they lived up to their reputation as the best northern lights tour.
