The Kon-Tiki Museum houses original boats and artifacts from Thor...

The Kon-Tiki Museum houses original boats and artifacts from Thor Heyerdahl's world famous expeditions such as the original Kon-Tiki balsa raft which crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947 and the original reed boat Ra II which crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1970. In both the Kon-Tiki and Ra exhibitions there are separate children exhibitions. The Kon-Tiki Museum also houses one of the most comprehensive exhibitions about Easter Island in the world, including a replica of a family cave from Easter Island. Underneath the Kon-Tiki raft is a special underwater exhibit that is fun for kids. Cinema screening the original Kon-Tiki documentary movie (Oscar for best documentary in 1951) every day at 12:00. Growing up in the 50's in America, the adventures of the Kon-Tiki raft got my attention. Later, Aku Aku and the history of Easter Island did as well. Thor Hyerdahl was my hero and this museum keeps his amazing stories alive. I was impressed to learn how he fought to prevent oil tankers from poluting the oceans by flushing their... More

It's easy to spend at least 1 hour here reading the interesting stories, watching nice pictures and the boats in real life. I had read one of Heyerdal's books before and now the stories became alive.

This museum is just next door to the Fram. Ask for a combination ticket for both museums and you shall save money! Although we of the elder generation are aware of Kon-Tiki, we still did learn a lot of new details, also about Ra I and II.

Loved this fascinating museum. A vast space, with lots to do. It is crammed full of artifacts and paraphernalia along with all the information you need to know about this great part of history. I found the staff to be very informative and made our visit thoroughly entertaining for the family.

Excellently laid out for adults and children, tells the story of Thor Heyerdahl and his determination to show that it is possible to sail the Pacific on a balsa-wood raft. A modern heroic epic, inspiring, educational and best-of-all, entirely true.

Second time at Kon-Tiki and it still didn't fail to rouse the imagination. I found myself there on the raft, imagining what a journey it would be. The large plastic fish are a bit tacky but I enjoyed this attraction again. 6 and 9 year old didn't find it quite as riveting as me but tolerated enough for us to... More

For the admission fee it's well worth seeing, it offers a great story with some good original photos and artefacts. The staff are friendly and the facilities are clean and well sign posted.

This museum gives a detailed account of Thor Heydergal and his band of adventurers. The original Kon Tiki raft is there as is the Ra. Pictures, news accounts, personal items are all there to give you a real feel of what they went through. Also saw lots of statues from Easter Island. Really interesting and educational.

This museum is definitely worth a visit - the story is just incredible and really captures the imagination. It may be small and less flashy than the Fram museum next door- but was definitely my favourite.
