Very nice monument that honors the Norwegian seafarers from the Viking era to the 20th century through 12 bronze figures. A nice Ranking on the main street, where it comes to its right. Set up in 1950 and performed by the artist Dyre Vaa

My wife and I went by this monument several times during our visit. The first time was during our organized walking tour. Our guide told us of its history, and the 4 stories depicted. The one that especially comes to mind, is the story with a totem pole. Very cool! It really is a nice monument.

Found this just by strolling through the streets our first day. Its at the end of a very large square that is bordered by the shops and some restaurants. This is before the Wharf. Shops are nice but as everything in Norway, very expensive compared to USA standards.

One can argue that the Sailor’s Monument is the “heart” of Bergen. Located near the harbor, it becomes quite busy with people sitting around the statue and the square. On the sides of Torgallmenningen square are popular shops and cafes.
The statue was created in 1950 celebrating in essence Bergen’s history with the sea. There are four large relief panels showing various era’s in Bergen’s history. Also, lifesize statues of various people who made an impact in the area such as Vikings, merchants and whalers.
It is interesting to see the monument and area in the early morning without people, during the day with people and the beauty at night. It is, indeed, a major statue in the city of Bergen.

Nice to see such a landmark in the city centre. Figures provide information even without any plaque. Enjoyed the plaza area.

We stumbled onto this monument as were walked around the Bryggen area. This attractive and interesting monument honours Norwegian sailors through various periods of time.

Right in the middle of what seems to be the main walking and shopping street, this monument is worth stopping and having a look. Very impressive.

The monument commemorates sailors and traders from different centuries. Norway is rich of fish and survived in the past thanks to fishing, so the sailors deserve the glory and respect that Bergen's citizens give them.

The monument has 4 sides up top and individual sailors on the bottom, each with its own stories. There is one which has a Viking ship navigating across the seas and you see how the lookout(for other ships, storms) is at the head of the ship. You can see others - captain, etc.

The Sailor's Monument in the centre of Bergan shopping district is a wonderful monument to Norwegian & Viking culture
on the four sides the statues are different depicting different eras. This would only take 10 minutes to take the four sides in, and I think this is a must do while you are in Bergan.

Being from British Columbia, Canada, I am curious about the totem poles on one of the panels since they are part of our Coast's history. Is this panel indicating that the Norwegians visited the west coast of British Columbia? If so, that is not well known in BC.

I couldn't find anything on the subject. There is a totem pole (original) erected in the park on the Nordnes point. It was given to the City of Bergen as a gift from Seattle in 1970 for the 900th anniversary of Bergen. Seattle is linked to Bergen as friendship town. But that was 20 years after the monument on Torgalmenningen was unveiled...
