About
The first church that was built where alesund Church lies today, was designed by Heinrich Schrimer, and constructed in 1854. This church was damaged in the Town Fire in 1904, even though it was built in brick. The present alesund Church was designed by Sverre Knudsen, and the first stone was laid down by King Haakon the 7th in July 1906. The church was inaugurated in 1909, and was built in concrete, and dressed with marble from Northern More. The frescoes and beautiful stained glass windows were made by Martin Enevold Thomt and Oddvar Straume, and the glass gable windows behind the organ were a gift from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. The font is made from Italian marble, and the church has got three bells of various sizes. The organ has got 64 tunes, and is one of the largest in Norway. The church is usualy closed on monday and saturday, unless there is a cruise ship in town. Except under wedding ceremonies. Also, the church is closed for tourist before and during funerals.

- CaribMarkCharleston, South Carolina149 contributionsA short walk to a special church. This stone church is so worth the easy uphill walk, 3 blocks from the center of town. There's a 5 krona donation at the door. Much about this church is dedicated to fishermen and seafarers. The detailed stain glass shows bible stories including Peter's being saved when he tried to walk on the water. Be sure to look for the ship in the center rear of the knave. The altar art goes from the nativity to the resurrection. If you're lucky in the afternoon, the organist may be playing and the sound will move you.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2023

The foundation stone of the new church was laid in 1906 by the new Norwegian King Haakon VII. Architect Sverre Knudsen designed the church in the Art Nouveau style. In the same style that the whole city was rebuilt. After 3 years, the construction of the church was completed. Interestingly, the facade was lined with marble. Not a cheap solution. The church was closed, so I couldn't evaluate the interior. ..Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 February 2024

So glad we found it open, as it was closing lunchtime, when we left. Not the oldest of churches, being about 110 years old. But at a quick glance could have been 200 / 300 years old.
I do like the sailing boat hanging in so many Norwegian churches.
For me seeing a couple of stuffed animals on a bench near the entrance shouted, ‘Children welcome.’ And I loved it.
I could have spent quite a while sitting quietly at the front, lost in reflective thoughts. I am a Christian from another country, but it was so obviously not just a ‘house of God’, but a ‘Home of God.’

Unfortunately the church is almost always closed. But the surroundings as all Alesund is gorgeous. The city is worth a visit no doubt.

This is worth a visit, not least because it is such a differently designed and decorated chuch. The situation of the church and chuch yard is beautiful. Gorgeous gardens and vegetation around. The church itself is beautiful stone and very unique in Norway. Inside the decor is very much early 20th century and so are mosaiques in windows. Quite different, not my favorite, but definitely worth studying as it is characteristic of early last century and very much German inspired from those days.

Nice looking church from the outside. Unfortunately it was closed when we were there. It’s a short walk from the city center and the environment is also nice to see, so nice to have seen it.

Unique church stone architecture and paintings and ceramic works inside make this a photogenic spot, but the acoustics are too poor to hear the preacher. It is a State Church - typical in Norway - dictated and run by the country.

We will be in Aalesund on a stop during our Hurtigruten Cruise on Sunday 9 December between 12 noon and 3pm. Will it be possible to visit the church during that time? We would really love to see it.

Depending on which place you are docking, max walking time, only 10 minutes, but normally 5 minutes. Enjoy.
