Alesund was our first introduction to cruising the Norwegian coast. Such a charming Art Nouveau city. Having a wonderful guide explain the architecture and history helped a lot.

This was an hot and a half guided walking tour given in English, meeting at the tourist information center and exploring the history and art nouveau buildings of Alesund. Our guide, Inger Anna, was absolutely fantastic. She had such a wealth of knowledge of the history of her city which she was bred very proud of. And it is a fascinating history, covering the fire of 1904 and the remarkable rebuilding job in not such a long period of time, including in the art nouveau style. She took us to many very interesting places including several vantage points high up which provided beautiful views of the city. This was one of the best walking tours we have ever taken and interest extremely reasonably priced ($15 ?). As a bonus the tourist information office has excellent Wi-Fi which we used while waiting for the tour.

This fishermen town or small city gives you an excellent idea how Norwegian people have coped with natural elements such as wind and sea/water. The guided walk leads you to various significant spots in the town, such as the shopping streets with its typical facades, the old pharmacy where a film is being showed about the fires that once destroyed the city almost completely, the ingenious way tunnels were built to connect the various surrounding islands, the small harbor...

Alesund is a pretty little city that has some very interesting architecture. It is spotlessly clean, streets well-laid out, harbor area very scenic. We toured around near where the Serenade of the Seas was docked and you could see the ship pretty much wherever you went in town. The town has numerous fountains, statues, an inner-harbor, and cafés and bakeries to die for. I think the best part of Alesund was simply chatting it up with local folk. They all speak English and are very friendly and will go out of their way to assist any traveler. They are rightfully proud of their town. At the end of the walking tour the guide brought us to some city benches overlooking an little inlet and asked that we sit down. Much to our surprise the benches were heated! Wonderful! It wasn't that cold that day but we were told that it gets really cold in Alesund in fall/winter. The town has a nice feel to it, very comfortable, and homelike. Don't pass up the opportunity to stop there.
