About
The current bandstand was built in 1935, with its unique semi-circular design and blue domed roof; there is no other like it in the United Kingdom. It has a main arena, middle and upper balconies and seats for 1,600. For many years the Bandstand has played host to a full programme of concerts and events and has survived as a outdoor musical entertainment venue because of its ever changing programme, introducing new audiences and new entertainment's without forgetting the more popular traditional concerts. The Bandstand to this day plays an important part in the musical entertainment on the south coast offering around 140 - 150 concerts per year.

It's one of the only bandstands of its kind, I believe, and architecturally is very unusual and interesting. It's appeared in several TV programmes like Poirot and Foyle's War. Currently it is undergoing refurbishment but the shows there are very popular and well priced. Recommended. It's lovely.

Many years of neglect, being starved of any council funding is evident. In addition to pigeons nesting all along the bottom area, the walls are cracked and parts look positively unsafe. The Council has just announced a temporary closure to undertake emergency works but is only spending £750,000 of the estimated £8m cost to restore the Bandstand, so many more years of danger and disrepair lay ahead.

Apparently every Wednesday evening during the holiday the season there is a concert in the bandstand. We spent a lovely 2 hours here at the 1812 Fireworks and Prom concert.

We were lucky to find a brass band playing mid week of our visit. Some classical, some old favourites and the 1812 overture in conclusion, complete with fireworks. It was a lot of fun.

Regarding seating - Do you just turn up and sit wherever you want or do you get assigned a specific seat number when booking ? Also, whats best are to sit for view - on the "Balcony" or down on the "Main Arena" ??

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your enquiry.
The seating is on a 'First Come First Served' basis for all our shows. Once doors open you may choose the available seat you would like.
The tickets for the Main Arena are sold first, once sold out or close to, we open the Balconies levels. We only sell as many tickets for each area as we have seats.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at the Seafront Office should we be able to assist further.
I will be visiting for the week 11/6 - 16/6 and would like to know what is on and if you can prr book, many thanks, Liz
