With COVID restrictions, me and my partner were looking to experience more of the cultural heritage around England and were recommended this 1066 Historian Guided Tours. Being from the area, we thought we'd take a gamble and make a day of it.
The tour itself was incredibly detailed, with lots of walking and unusual views of Pevensey Castle and the surrounding area.
We arrived at the car park around 10am or so where Heather was waiting and greeted us cheerfully. She clearly has a lot of passion for this period in history and showed us some custom-made laminated maps and family trees she'd actually drawn up herself. This was incredibly useful to get accustomed to the background of 1066, including a brief history lesson from around 1001 up to the Norman invasion. I use the term lesson loosely though, as Heather's conversational tone and anecdotes helped to keep things light and easy to understand.
Along with a tour of Pevensey Castle and the surrounding area, we then drove up the exact route William and his soldiers traveled, where we arrived at Battle for the second half of the tour. All the way Heather was accommodating, asking if we had any questions and diligently answering any that we had. The spots chosen to stop were well-planned, with benches nearby incase we needed to rest.
There is a lot of walking involved here, including a particularly memorable walk around the perimeter of the battlefield itself. This really helped to give a scale for the Battle of Hastings and also get a sense of the viewpoint from both sides of the conflict.
Given the sheer amount of detail put into this tour, the price is incredibly reasonable and there really isn't a better time to soak in more of our British culture. You definitely get a lot out of this and I'd highly recommend anyone on the fence with this to give it a go. We'll certainly be keeping an eye out for any more guided tours Heather may be offering!
