About
The Great Orme Tramway is closed for winter. The Great Orme Tramway is Britain’s only funicular, or cable-hauled, tramway that travels on public roads. Delighting visitors since it opened in 1902. The unique journey begins at Victoria Station, a short distance from Llandudno’s seaside and pier. Climb aboard one of our beautifully restored tramcars and start your ascent through the winding roads of the Great Orme. Views from the summit are breath-taking. On a clear day, it’s possible to see as far as the Isle of Man, Blackpool and the Lake District! Well-behaved dogs welcome. The tramcars are open to the elements and the Great Orme is 207m (670 feet) high - remember to bring something warm to wear. Prices from £9.75 adult return, £6.90 child return - single tickets and family discount available.

- rebecca c56 contributionsDog friendly, unique and beautiful trip. Stunning views at the top.Really great trip. Yes you can drive the car up to the top of great Orme & save a few quid but this is a really unique and stunning experience. Even the dog loved it. Once at the top there are breathtaking views and plenty of areas to walk. Be prepared to queue for the ride up in the morning as it gets busy, but it's worth the wait. Thanks for the review - we're glad you had a great time!Written 13 April 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Written 10 April 2023
- Monika SBedford, United Kingdom6 contributionsGreat experience, but not for people with mobility issues (QUEUES!)Fantastic experience not just for tram enthusiasts, great views of Llandudno and the surrounding areas. Staff very professional, but there is distinct lack of any provision for customers with mobility issues - the only benches available are just by the tram station, which is not good enough when there are long queues. I am unable to stand for too long and we were unlucky to visit the tramway on a busy weekend, with queuing times at least 30 min plus. There is no option of booking online, which I believe would have saved some queuing time. Maybe there should at least be an option of fast-track access to book online? We are glad you enjoyed your ride on the Tramway! - Charles_and_SusanNottingham, United Kingdom5,802 contributionsA good experience and good views at the top.Well, you have to do it really when you're in Llandudno. There was a little queue but we were soon on the tram and off trundling up the street. Change trams half way and it was getting cooler all the time. We had a good walk round at the top to a couple of viewpoints but there was a very cold wind and so we settled in the cafe for lunch before setting off down again.Hi Charles and Susan - We're glad you had good time!Written 29 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2023
- johnandcarol_8Isle of Sheppey, United Kingdom160 contributionsWorth the fee to keep the heritageThe funicular railway was opened in 1902 and is a lovely example of British craftsmanship. Still running after 120 years and maintained to a really high standard, the fee is worth it as it helps to keep this heritage attraction in top order. There are many videos to explain how the tram works but if in the area we thoroughly recommend the journey for its scenic views and nostalgic feel. Great Orme is a lovely walk so make sure you leave a good 3-4 hours to take everything in.Thanks for taking the time to leave a review - we are glad you enjoyed your time with us at the Tramway!Written 29 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Written 23 June 2023
- Ken JBirmingham, United Kingdom1,119 contributionsA must doThe tramway runs in two sections from Victoria station in Llandudno to half way station where you change for the second part to the summit. Expect queues to go up and ones to come down at appropriate busy times of the day when the tramway can operate a 10 minute service. We actually drove to the summit via a toll road - the ticket of which can be used for car parking at the top. So by doing it this way early in the morning we had virtually empty trams down to the resort. Nice history and pictures at half way station if you have time to have a look.Great idea to start at the top to avoid the queues. - GirlsOnTourLondon, United Kingdom3 contributionsA must if you’re in LlandudnoA charming ride up to The Great Orme on this quaint & beautiful tram. Open for over 120 years they have been restored beautifully. Prepare for a bit of queuing, and you’ll need to change trams at the halfway station, but well worth it. At the summit the 360° views are breathtaking. There’s a cafe serving hot food and drinks and fresh cream cakes. Delightful. Also a souvenir gift shop too. A pity the cable cars weren’t running as it was too windy. A thoroughly enjoyable ride on the Great Orme Tramway. Shame it didn’t last a bit longer. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review - we're glad you enjoyed your trip!Written 18 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 July 2023
- KmanWentAshby de la Zouch, United Kingdom177 contributionsInterestingA pleasant ride, even if not very long. More of a means to an end, rather than an end in itself. Something you just have to do, to reach the halfway and the top. Shame that there isn't any cover outside base camp station for when it rains before opening time. And then you only get a single, small towel, to wipe down the wet seats before starting your journey. The Tramway can surely invest in a few more towels. Not much to see at base camp, but the halfway station - where you have to change trams anyway - has a good collection of posters and displays of historic information. I didn't see the Tramway company emphasising any of this, as you are effectively hurried out of 1 tram, through the covered walkway where the displays are located, and into the next tram, without much time to stop and look. Tho the old newspaper article about a fatal accident could have been less prominent. Then there's the summit stop. Typically there's an expensive and tacky souvenir shop at Summit station, and a similarly awful cafe and shop at the summit itself. But summit station does have an interesting display of flora/fauna/geology which I found very interesting and well presented. However, all in all, a reasonable distraction for tourists. And a must-do journey for the nearby Bronze Age Copper Mine. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review - we have passed on your feedback!Written 3 August 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Written 18 July 2023
- wendy iLiverpool, United Kingdom320 contributionsThe great orme experienceWe always take a trip up the great orme when we are in Llandudno. It’s a great experience and not too expensive. Adult £10.90 return and child £8 return which is reasonable for the experience. It’s a shame as no pre booking. My daughter has disabilities so it’s a bit of nightmare having to queue around the block, which is most of the time. I got there for 1115hrs. The queue was already at the entrance steps. We were on the third tram but the queue goes down relatively quick. There’s a halfway point where you change trams. At the top there is a mini golf course, an outdoor play area, a centre where food, toilet and gift shop were available. It’s a must do in Llandudno, sheep in the mountains, great view and fresh air on the way up. A lovely holiday activity. We're glad you enjoyed your trip with us - thanks for the review!Written 11 August 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2023

A great way to get to the top of Great Orme and admire the amazing views from the top. Dog friendly and walks back down into Llandudno from the top. Worth it for the views alone.

The Great Orme Tramway was the reason for our visit to Llandudno. When I first saw a picture of the tramway, I immediately fell in love with it. Since Llandudno tends to get too crowded in the summer, we decided to visit in June, and luckily, the weather was even better than in July and August. We took the tramway up to the summit in the morning, and the view was phenomenal.
The tram is in excellent condition, and we enjoyed the trip immensely.

Definitely worth doing if you can find a break in the wind and the rain. There are some great views. We stopped half way up to do the great orme mine.

We decided to take a tram ride up the Great Orm, lovely experience, and even a crazy golf and cable car at the top, and a cafe. The weather was lovely so that was a plus. The views are gorgeous.

A fine experience.
A trip full of beautiful scenery. We were unable to do all we wanted to on this trip.
Didn't have time to visit the copper mine or the church.
We will come back as the Great Orme is well worth your time.
Loved rattling along in the tram.

We loved the tramway, fantastic and fun way to get to the top of the Great Orme. Fare was good value and staff were all friendly and helpful. We recommend spending some time at the half way point (you have to get off here anyway to change trams) and walking down to St Tudno's Church, which is well worth a visit

The views were amazing! Very reasonable price I think we paid £8-9 each for a return. You get 2 trams to the top. Half way up is a mine which is also a really interesting place to stop and take a look around.
At the top is a cafe which had lovely fish and chips and a mini golf.
The tramway staff were really lovely and helpful.

Took advantage of the beautiful weather, my wife and I found Victoria Station and only waited a few minutes for the tram, surprised to find that we had to change at the half way point, but it was a nice surprise as the walk through to the waiting tram was interesting, no waiting at all then up to the summit, and the cafe for a bite, then up to see the wonderful views, all in all a fantastic day out

Where do you get the tram from please, are there pre-bookable tickets and at the end is there a cafe/restaurant? Somone mentioned a mine, is this on the way? Thank you for any information.

We parked in Happy Valley car park right by the pier. It was free when we went, but I think it’s normally a pay and display. It’s not a long walk to the tram station - about 10 minutes. You can also get a bus right to the top aswell from Llandudno beach bus station. Hope that helps?

Hi Karen - we don't offer different prices for people with disabilities. Our low season price for an adult return is £8.50 and £9.50 in high season (July/August). Thanks!

Went to Llandudno last week and was disappointed to find Tramway closed.
Please could you advise when it last ran and could it run again this year?
My favourite attraction in Llandudno and near enough (live in Wigan) to make revisit.
Thank you
