Visit the place where railways were born! Home of Stephenson's Locomotion No 1 and other rare engines. Set in our original 1840's railway station follow the history of Darlington and the growth of the railways. We have a shop with souvenirs to suit all tastes and pockets and a varied events programme. There really is something for everyone!

Didn’t realise this historic place was here as it’s tucked off busy North Road. Well worth visiting. It may seem small but there’s a lot packed in. Well laid out. Bright & airy. Amazing to see the engines and read about how the first public...More

Excellent small railway museum in the town where it all started. Unfortunately not well promoted by the Darlington Council.

Considering Darlington's significance in the development of railways this small museum doesn't reflect Darlington's stature one iota. It's a small, but neat museum with some interesting exhibits but unless you are a dedicated steam head or there's something else going on here, it's hardly worth...More

Thank you for your review and I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm sorry you didn't like the Halloween decorations but this was for our very popular Halloween event and the October half term.

Just a small museum but it was the world's first railway station and the exhibits (including 4 very old trains) are fascinating.

Rather than just showing you railway engines and artifacts, this excellant museum tells an important story about part of the industrial history of the North East. It's as much about enterprise and innovation as the steam engines on show. Although only a small museum, it...More
