Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thornton Hall gardens are really amazing. The colour ,quality and variety of plants are unique . At present the roses , peonies lupins and delphiniums are outstanding as are the green plants: hostas ( every conceivable variety) climbing plants especially clematis and roses. One of the best gardens in the country and well worth a visit. Open Wednesdays until 20th July 2022

We visited in June after a recommendation from a friend. It was lovely to visit especially as we were starting to come out of Lockdown. It was a magnificent day. The gardens were beautifully presented, well matured plants, areas of different plants, flowering and non flowering shrubs, beautiful colours and fragrances. Interspersed with lovely water features and lovely sculptures. It was a lovely day and the weather was kind to us.

We visited yesterday June 29th and were wowed by the colour and scent. These are the most beautiful I have ever visited and I'll be going again before they close for the season. The food served is gorgeous. Beautiful quality sandwiches, cakes and scones.

Great preparation of the entire garden. A really relaxed atmosphere. Fantastic volunteers. Kitchen staff were superb and so too some of the visitors. I lost my bank card in the garden. A very kind visitor took it to the staff in the 'cafe' area. They took it to the entrance staff and I was able to retrieve it within minutes. Thank you to all involved. Great place to be!!

First visit and was absolutely amazed by the gardens, they are wonderful. As a keen gardener I was really inspired. Will definitely return next year. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. A lovely place for a visit on a long awaited summer’s day!

We found the garden disappointing - clearly no age to it yet - though it showed promise for the future.
Food was good - though poor value for money.
Not in a rush to return.

Thornton Hall Gardens are a hidden local gem. Over a number of years Sue Manners has developed them from scratch in fields adjoining her family farm at Staindrop, near Darlington.
They are privately owned so only open for a few dates in the summer, but if you can make any of them you won't be disappointed.
The gardens are simply stunning, packed full of herbaceous plants, shrubs, roses, clematis, hostas, ferns.........the list goes on. Two beautiful ponds, stunning views, home grown plants for sale, great food in the cafe,. Simply a wonderful day out for any keen gardener and anyone who appreciates beautiful gardens.. The facilities aren't fancy but there are loos and an excellent temporary cafe in one of the outbuildings. And all the proceeds from Sue's openings go to charity as this isn't a business, just her wish to share her beautiful gardens with others and raise money for a good cause.
We don't live locally but drove there from West Yorkshire and I promise the journey's worth it. But if you want to see them get in quick as there's only a few dates left into July and then that's it for 2014.

This garden is opened on special days and proceeds go to charity. However saying that it is not a garden to be missed. It is surprisingly large and well designed. They also have a website of their own
http://www.thorntonhallgardens.co.uk/about.asp
Check it out especially if you are a plantaholic!
The mobile cafe they have in during the opening days can be a little pricey, but it is well frequented and of course they have a captive audience. The whole garden is disabled friendly with disabled parking. A good thought from the owners.

Visited the gardens when they were having a charity open day. Beautifully set out with numerous room ‘areas’. Well worth a visit.
