We've been coming to Wakefield for a number of years - a friendly club with a variety of excellent musicians and an audience who listen! Sadly not been able to come as often recently but looking forward to our next visit soon. Keep up the good work Wakefield Jazz!

The programme aims to bring the best international musicians to our doorstep, and succeeds. Visitors will find a cosy and unpretentious environment in which to explore contemporary players and voices. Every week brings new players and voices.

Great to be back at Wakefield Jazz after the long summer break, first gig played by Babelfish, wonderful singing by Brigitte Beraha with great back up from Barry Green-piano, Chris Laurence-double bass. Good atmosphere as always and a warm welcome for newcomers, plenty more great gigs in the new season to look forward to...

I've known about Wakefield jazz for years, but always thought it might be a bit elitist and the music might be too 'way out there' for my tastes. However, my wife and I gave it a try in December 2017 and have now made it our regular Friday night treat. The top quality music is varied in style, but is always enjoyable and entertaining. It's great to watch and listen to brilliant musicians live. Can't recommend it enough if you have any liking for music.

One other 'plus' is that the bar is reasonably priced and food is available before the music starts.

The newcomer to Wakefield Jazz on a Friday night should expect a multi-disciplinary sports club, because that’s exactly what the College Grove facility is. What you will also get is one of the best and most enthusiastic audiences in the country, all listening very quietly to some of the best jazz anywhere around.
I have been to a number of ‘similar’ clubs elsewhere and when you’ve paid a fee to listen to live music, the last thing you want to hear is what people have been doing at work, what their new car is like or why someone is entombed in a cellar in Eastenders...or was it Corrie? Not at Wakefield, they listen to the musicians. I saw Tom Cawley once stopped playing in the middle of a number, looked at the audience, grinned and said..”It’s true what I’ve heard, you lot really do listen to us, thank you so much”. The next time he played, he had to break from touring with Peter Gabriel in Germany, flew over and flew back to Germany the following day. He said he really wanted to play Wakefield, it’s that good. Many top pianists have complimented the piano and have always given wonderful, world class performances.
Don’t miss Wakefield Jazz, you’ll be made very welcome, I was from the very start.

This is one of the top Jazz clubs in the country. The atmosphere is friendly and conducive to listening to the music.

Always check what's on but music starts at 8.30 pm prompt on Fridays and generally ends at about 11.00 pm

It seems a most unlikely venue to listen to some of the best contemporary jazz music in the country but Wakefield Jazz ticks all the right boxes. Top jazz musicians from around the world tell me they love to appear at Wakefield Jazz as it brings out the best in them. It has the most friendly and well informed audience which probably accounts for its well deserved world wide reputation. But don't expect to chat away while the music is being played as this is very much frowned upon. If you want to hear some of the best jazz around in a friendly intimate atmosphere with cheap drinks and good food then this is the place for you. For £14 ( or less if you are a student or OAP ) you get 2 hours of great jazz with a break in the middle for the famous Wakefield Jazz raffle. It's a great way to spend a Friday evening.

We go here a lot. There is a varied programme with big names from the jazz world and sometimes a support set to hear young musicians as they start out. The audience are friendly, and we've got chatting to people who have travelled long distances to be there. No chatting whilst the music is being played though, people come to listen!
