    As above
An excellent day spent first watching a Shakespeare play and then a picnic in the grounds. The cast were brilliant and put on a really great show. The theatre itself was a reasonable size and well managed . Easy access to the bar and toilets. And all staff were efficient and helpful. Thank you .

    Always a treat
Go every year. Always enjoy visiting Tolethorpe. Usually we picnic but it rained yesterday so we just met in the bar before the play. Surroundings are beautiful. Magical when dark. Plays are always good. Only negative I felt yesterday was the cost of drinks. A small glass of white wine (pinot grigio) a large glass of white wine (savignon blanc) and a lemonade served in plastic cups at the bar cost nearly £18.00 may be wrong but it seemed quite expensive. 45 mins to go before the show so would have appreciated a glass would not have expected to take it into the theatre.

Magnificent Play Production - The Lady in the Van
The play The Lady in the Van was a magnificent production in the open air theatre at Tolthorpe Hall. The cast were excellent especially the leading lady. The set with the numerous vans and the costumes and make up were superb. A wonderful experience in a lovely setting.

Play excellent dining not so good.
The play and surroundings were excellent, definitely recommend seeing a play. However we were celebrating a birthday so had booked in for a meal too. That was the disappointment. A glass had lipstick on from previous use, a plate was chipped. Yes it was a nice white tablecloth and napkins. But the quality of cutlery did not match. The service was adequate but not what you expect in those surroundings. Food was good but overpriced for the quantity, some hot, some not so hot. And then to top it off a service charge was added to the bill, this should be discretionary not assumed. And when it is requested to be removed it should be done with good grace not make the customer feel uncomfortable. Will not eat there again which is a great shame. We did allow for issues with the chef but even so the service and welcome should not have been affected.

Outstanding production in a lovely setting
We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Tolethorpe and thought that the sixties-set production of As You Like It was outstanding. Torrential rain delayed the start and lengthened the interval, but the cast soldiered on and, in a strange way, it added to the atmosphere. We plan to visit again next year and (weather permitting!) will look to picnic in the lovely grounds.

Fantastic production, but take your own food
Excellent play - The Lady in the Van…great acting and superb production…but the same can’t be said for the Bistro dining, the first time we’ve used it. Poor service, no leadership / waited ages for our drinks to arrive and very small portions for the price being charged. We had a significant complaint (which I’ve reported to them & won’t go into detail here) and despite that, we were presented with a bill with a 12.5% service charge added!!….which we naturally declined. We thoroughly recommend Tolethorpe, it’s fantastic…we go every year, but next year we’ll revert to taking our own food.

Saw Lady in a Van, it was great . Booked a picnic - the box had obviously been prepared hours in advance as nothing was chilled. Felt like a school lunch box, expected better for the cost, wish i had looked here before ordering. Did not even provide plates and even a knife! Next time i think a quick visit to M&S on the way will provide a better experience.

Once again - performance was great and would certainly recommend a visit to friends.

Saw Lady in the van and the performance was fabulous. The woman taking the role of Miss Shepherd could give Maggie Smith a run for her money. Just brilliant but and it is a huge BUT as we were travelling from out of area we booked a meal at the Bistro. The food was extremely poor with the only enjoyable part being the dessert which had clearly been bought in. The soup was inedible. It had clearly been burnt and water added to eke it out. It was tasteless apart from the burnt taste. I never realised you could ruin a piece of sea bass so much. Greasy with greasy vegetables underneath. Leek and potato underneath with a tablespoon (if that)of a tasteless sauce. It looked anaemic and had once again no taste. The service was non existent. The cutlery mismatched and just put on the table anyhow with a small paper tissue as a napkin. We were not asked if we wanted water or condiments and had to ask and neither were we asked about the food.
Coffee came in a small plastic cup presumably because if they had used a normal cup it would have just been a puddle in the middle.
The cost of a fixed menu meal (little choice) was £29.99 but we had to pay a further £5.00 for the sea bass and £3.00 for the coffee plus our extortionately priced drink. In total it came to just over £45.00 each and then they added 12.5% service charge without mentioning it. When asked for it to me removed the young lady became very challenging (rude) demanding to know why. I told her there was little or no service and how bad the food was to which she did not answer but continued with a rude manner to take our payment. Not a good experience at all. Such a shame as the hall has such potential do yourself a favour Tolethorpe -sort your catering out for next season as it is doing your reputation damage. Will return but will eat elsewhere first and bring own drinks

We went to see Lady in the Van theatre production was fantastic, Bistro restaurant however was awful.

Set menu no description on website what it would be, very poor choice of starters, mains and desserts. Ordered prawn cocktail starter and you could of fitted it all on a small saucer, Bland and tasteless too! Mains was a cottage pie and two tiny carrots with a thumb size green been. Cottage pie was the size of a child's portion. Sweet wasn't much better, no ice cream offered as freezer had broken down! For £30.00 per head plus 12.5% service charge was worst set menu ever, not even a bread roll offered or coffee and mints at end etc... Will definitely be going back for plays as have been going for over 20 years but def not again with thus catering company.

Lady in the van was a brilliant play. Have been attending Tolethorpe Hall for many years to see most of the plays.

However, evening was spoilt by the rudeness of the hospitality staff.
Especially, a young girl called Tamsin. I think there should be some investment and training in relation to customer service.

I would still go to the hall but would never again subject myself to the service so would not purchase food or drink.

The venue is good but the bistro unfortunately is poor, only three mains on offer portions very small served on chipped plates that look like they came out of the 80's front of house is McDonalds standard we had to order our sweet twice and ask for the bill four times. On top of all that they added the service charge as standard. Very poor when small changes could make all the difference.
