About
The inspirational, award-winning and world-renowned gardens of 'the most influential gardener of our time' Beth Chatto OBE VMH. Beth took on a challenging site in the 1960s, which was boggy in places, incredibly dry and infertile in others, and began to create the most beautiful garden, based on her principles of ecological and sustainable planting 'Right plant, right place'; growing plants where they are happiest. With her team, Beth transformed the land into various informal gardens comprising the Gravel Garden, Water Garden, Reservoir Garden, Woodland Garden and Scree Garden. 7.5 acres of sustainable planting in challenging growing conditions to inspire any gardener or plant lover. Extensive nursery with choice of over 2,000 different kinds of mainly herbaceous plants and bulbs, plus giftshop and tearoom serving locally sourced light refreshments. Entry to tearoom, gift shop and nursery is free. Entry to the gardens must be rebooked online.

The ladies at reception were welcoming and friendly with a good sense of humour. Tea room serves good food, staff again are welcoming and friendly. - Sue C54 contributionsEnjoyable at any time of yearBeth Chatto's garden is a joy to behold at any time of the year. There's always something new to see. The planting schemes are amazing. The nursery is great if you want to attempt growing something you've seen - I've had some success over the years. The cafe is also good.Thank you for taking your time to leave us a review. With all of the rain we've had this year the garden looking especially beautiful at this time of year, although we'd quite like some sunshine to accompany it! - 4LuciecmillerWalderslade, United Kingdom29 contributionsPerfect afternoon with parents ♥️A beautiful afternoon spent here with my parents, not sure how much it was to get in as my dad paid but the gardens were stunning, the gardeners were very very helpful and friendly, as well as knowledgeable and the nursery had some very reasonably priced plants and a lot of them you wouldn’t see in standard garden centres or if they are are nearly double the price and half the size Fell in love with the border planting and helped me work out how to get my borders with varying height and fill in the spaces Love that by buying the plants there helps pay to run it, will definitely be back for more plants for my garden and to enjoy the garden planting as the season changes The coffee and scones were lovely too Thank you for having us ♥️Hi Lucie, Thank you for leaving us such a great review. It sounds like you had a wonderful afternoon out with your parents. We're also pleased to read you took some inspiration back home to your own garden. We look forward to welcoming you back one day for more plant and cake inspiration! - denise m7 contributionsOne of the best gardens open to the public...anywhere in EnglandI have been waiting to visit this garden for ages and certainly well worth the long drive fro. West Midlands. Make a few days if your trip, there's plenty to do/seebin and around Colchester. If I lived neater I would visit every season, or more likely volunteer to work there. The gardens are the perfect set up to understand Beth's philosophy of right plant, right place. I think everyone will find an area to suit their own garden circumstances. I'm totally inspired to do some rearranging of some of my borders, starting with the excellent plants I bought from the plant centre. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. Can't comment on the cafe as didn't go in.Hi Denise, Thank you for your lovely review. We're glad you took inspiration all of that way back home with you and we agree that we are one of many highlights the county has to offer. Maybe you'll get the chance to visit again one day and we can look forward to welcoming you back. - Martin THawkhurst, United Kingdom611 contributionsMore than just a garden centre and well worth a visitOh no, not another garden centre as my wife organized a detour on a trip to the coast. Well, this was so much more. Stunning gardens, charming knowledgeable staff and really appreciated the commitment to what is obviously a special place. Could see the years and years of hard work that had been invested in the garden and the special dry weather sections were impressive. There is a massive commercial nursery as well with top quality plants for sale (prices reasonable for the quality) and grown on site which seemed quite special (and environmentally friendly). Nice cafe and gift shop too, a great destination for anyone who likes their gardens. Just be prepared to come out poorer with some lovely plants that you probably didn’t need but will enjoy for several years …Hi Martin, Thank you for the kind review. We're glad your wife managed to twist your arm for a visit! We do pride ourselves on the effort our Garden team take in the Garden, as well as our other teams in the Nursery, Tearoom and Gift Shop. Hopefully the purchases you made will remind you of your enjoyable visit for many years to come. We visited Saturday arrived just before 12. We’ve been several times and it felt quite empty compared to usual.
The cafe staff serving are always very friendly and helpful.
The same can’t be said of the kitchen staff.
I asked for beans with a meal, prepared to pay extra or swap for their “winter slaw”.
The kitchen staff claimed they were too busy and would not accommodate the request, despite beans being on offer should you choose pa jacket potato.
While there, the woman bringing the food out to the tables delivered a sandwich to a nearby table. She announced in a loud voice for all to hear “One sandwich to share”. The older couple looked uncomfortable and pointed to some cake they had already purchased by way of justification or apology.
It seems she and the kitchen staff had both got out of the wrong side of the bed!
In a competitive world, with many companies having to shut up shop, I think attitudes could do with addressing here.
Within reason, menus should be more flexible and customers should never be made to feel embarrassed.
On the plus the sausage and vegan rolls were tasty but with the half washed potatoes and salad tossed in vinegar, the whole meal was below par.
The shop has the same old limited goods and I note the prices have gone up substantially.
The entry to the garden is far too high.
It’s such a shame Beth’s beautiful place is not being offered with the same love and attention she showed her plants.

This garden is beautiful. There’s always something lovely to see but I would say July is a brilliant time to visit. The gravel garden is gorgeous and it’s so good that it doesn’t need water. The ponds give the main gardens focus and shape, and the planting there is superb, with glorious mixed beds of herbaceous perennials around them, and soft beautifully maintained grass paths. The woodland looked lovely still, considering it’s midsummer and the new beds near the nursery had filled out beautifully. The succulents by the house are full of strong shapes, pattern and colour, and arranged like a work of art! There were bees and butterflies everywhere, and even a little robin sitting on the garden sign as we left. The nurseries, while fairly pricy, offer really excellent quality plants for every area of your garden. Brilliant. Thank you.

This garden was one of the loveliest and most diverse gardens I have ever visited. It was so beautiful and we loved the dry garden and the forest garden in particular. The range of plants was interesting and unusual. It was peaceful even though it was well attended. We wandered round for about an hour and had lunch in the cafe. The entrance fee included a voucher to spend in the cafe or garden centre so we also bought some bulbs. They were expensive but hopefully they will last a long time. The launch was standard fare for that sort of venue.

We had a lovely couple of hours one afternoon at Beth chatto gardens. The grounds, plants and flowers are stunning! Covid procedures were in place including masks in reception, staff in visors and shields up at counters and antibac stations for public use. It was easy to social distance as the grounds are spacious.
The garden centre area, where you can buy plants viewed in the grounds, was well stocked and reasonably priced.
The tea room was closed but there was tea and coffee, cold drinks and ice creams available.

On what was a really hot day last week, we spent two very relaxing hours bimbling around the gardens, taking advantage of any shade that could be found. The garden centre had a good array of plants to purchase but had sadly run out of the Aeonium that had caught our eye, but still purchased 5 plants to add to our garden. It was a shame that the cafe was closed especially as most other similar premises had opened up. We took advantage of the two sprinklers that were watering the plants, allowing ourselves to get slightly soaked to combat the heat, much to the amusement of others.

We had a lovely couple of hours at the garden's. We booked in advance and had a take out coffee as the cafe is closed due to restrictions. The dry garden is amazing and the green parts make it a pleasant walk around. It's not huge, but the plants on sale are easy to find and in alphabetical order. There's a lovely cat, made my day when she sat with us for coffee.

I had wanted to see these gardens for ages, particularly the drought garden so we decided to do the long drive from near Norwich to cheer us up after a recent bereavement. We weren't disappointed. Thought the gardens were stunning, we went into every corner and went round several times. Even at the end of August there was lots of colour. There were unusual plants and everything was labelled. Brilliant to then be able to buy some of the plants we had seen. A pity that the cafe wasn't open but we were able to buy a coffee from reception and drink it under cover as it started to rain towards the end of our visit. Can't wait to visit again in early summer.

Beth Chatto's Gardens have matured into a beautiful and tranguil place. It is amazing how the plants are so well suited to their surroundings and are flourishing here. There are many varieties I had not seen before as well as many familiar ones. It was a great feeling to just wander about and enjoy the show of flowers and foliage.
The specialist nursery at the end of the garden is extremely well laid out with an enormous variety of plants at reasonable prices and a tasteful gift shop. Finally there is a cafe with many outside tables to sit at to enjoy a good cup of coffee. This was our first visit but we would certainly like to return.

Thank you for your lovely review John. As you have said, Beth's gardening principle of 'right plant, right place' means plants are carefully chosen to suit the conditions in which they are to grow, ensuring they flourish in the garden.
We hope you will come back to visit the gardens.

This was our first trip to Beth Chatto, and cannot believe we haven never been here before.
Heard so much about Beth Chatto and her important place in gardening history but never realised what a gem this garden is.
With an approach around planting the right plant in the right place, the different areas are spectacular yet very natural.
We visit many gardens each year, but the knowledge that you are in a real gardeners garden that they built and dedicated their life to makes it all the more worth while.
The garden center was amazing in its range of plants and with all of them coming from what we had seen in the garden itself and incredibly good value.
Loved our day and we will be back now .
Thank you to those responsible for keeping this wonderful place at its best.

A wonderful place to visit to see a very wide range of plants and garden areas. I found the wild areas particularly wonderful and so did the wildlife that sang in the trees and swam in the lake.
It must take considerable effort to keep the grass neat with the number of visitors that were evident on the day we visited.
