Under new management. Same archeology awesome coffee
Jul 2019 • Solo
Part cafe part tourist attraction. The pastries are good and affordable and the staff friendly and helpful. The coffee strong but smooth an excellent pick me up whilst shopping. What sets this place apart is the Roman ruins on display. A great place to bring visitors to colchester. At time of writing the cafe is being run to support a homeless charity so if you do want to see remains around 2,000 years old grab a coffee to support a good cause. It's great coffee anyway.

Eat your heart out Rome
Sep 2017
If you love Roman history, this is a “must see”, beautifully excavated, preserved and displayed Roman remains, with easy to read boards explaining the history of Colchester and the significance of the remains. There is an excellent film and recreation, showing exactly how the remains would have looked. Miss this at your peril. Also buy a coffee which goes to world food aid. Coffee with a conscience and excellent historical exhibition. Perfect!

Colchester history at its finest
Feb 2018 • Friends
What a find ! Colchester history at its finest just goes to show you what's under your feet which you wouldn't normally see.
Directly opposite colchester castle, blink and miss it , but look harder and a fantastic piece of colchester history has been opened up and shown off, with large glass floors showing you Claudius gateway to colchester.
Free to look round, then gap a coffee and cake, well worth a look

A new attraction for the Roman Colchester story
Nov 2017 • Couples
This new part of Colchester's Roman story has been beautifully set out with clear views of the foundations and display boards -but most effective is the short 3-d visualisation of the original gateway and enclosure with Claudius's temple inside. Together with the Castle Museum and Roman Circus, Colchester is making a very successful tourist attraction of its Roman period, well done!

Stunning glass floored exhibition of the Roman arcade entry to Temple of Claudius
Jul 2017 • Solo
This is an amazing new free attraction. They hope you will buy coffee in return. Three glass floors reveal amazing preserved ruins from the original 400 foot long Roman Arcade that led to the Temple of Claudius. Today our Norman castle sits on top of the temple foundations but you can take a trip into the Roman temple foundation vaults under the castle. The temple was the principle temple to the imperial cult of Claudius the God and was started in 54 AD. Our castle which is a copy of the plan for the White Tower of the tower of London was built on top and wrapped around it, therefore we have the largest Norman keep in Europe. Outside the Temple was a large altar and beyond that a rectangular colonnaded stoa enclosure on three sides with this arcade of arches and gateway at the front on the line of the main Roman road in the first municipal town in Britain, which today is Colchester but back in 54 was Colonia Victricensis (meaning `City of Victory’ or `City of the Victorious’)
