About
Colchester Zoo is constantly developing and has won many awards for its work. With over 270 species to see, set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, Colchester Zoo is well worth a visit. As you walk around the zoo there's plenty of play areas to try out including the indoor soft play area Jungle Tumble with a section for under 3s and all new play equipment where the kids can release their wild side! New enclosures include a walk through enclosure with butterflies and another with Rainbow Lorikeets offering visitors a chance to feed them a treat of nectar. Plus there's 'Bears of the Rising Sun', a state of the art enclosure which houses two beautiful sun bears , Jo Jo and Srey Ya. You can also come face to face with Komodo Dragons, see white rhino, giraffes, ostrich and kudu roaming together at Kingdom of the Wild and walk underwater through the 24m tunnel at the Playa Patagonia sealion pool. Learn more about the animals and see them up close by watching one of the 50 daily displays. You even get the fantastic opportunity to feed the elephants and giraffes yourself and take a ride on the 'Lost Madagascar Express' road train! Don't forget to pop into the discovery centre and have a go at handling some unusual bugs or get your face painted and transform yourself into your favourite animal!

- 62MARY62104 contributionsConfusing layout - animals tucked awaySanta experience very good. We all enjoyed and Santa talked to each of the children. The magic sleigh ride in front of a screen was excellent. The Santa experience cost extra to the annual admission passes. It was a cold Dec day, we saw very few animals, they must have all been tucked up. I did wonder if the numbers had been reduced. I found the layout of the zoo very confusing and enclosed. I guess all the structures were to make it easier on the slopes. I found we were walking around in circles and didn't get where we wanted to. Better sign posting would be useful. The signs were there marked the area rather than the animals. Some signs for the most popular animals would have been better. Loads of food outlets and model animals and playgrounds. Free parking.Thank you so much for your feedback following your recent visit, we are pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable day with us. - Kevman28United Kingdom106 contributionsGreat zoo, naff English weather!Great zoo, one of the best and well worth a visit, but more in warmer months. Staff are great welcoming and helpful, and there are so many animals to see. Being winter the animals are often tucked away, food stalls mostly shut, and a lick of varnish needed before the spring trade. Somehow our tickets were still full price at over £20 each which seems unfair for only 50% of the experience! I will wait for spring/ summer next time to get value for money.Thank you so much for your feedback following your recent visit. Soft play is great if you have young kids (note you need to pre book). The place is a maze! The app is helpful although it’s location / direction facility is sometimes confusing. Animals are amazing. We went on New Year’s Day and lots of the food places were shut but those that were open were good. - Andy H1 contributionGreat Day OutHaven't been for a few years, and wow you've worked hard to enhance the ZOO features. Its a great day out with excellent clean facilities. The animals look happy in their enclosures. The food huts served some lovely food we had sausages and chips good value. We was able to see all the animals even tho it was a little chilly. The gift shop was well stocked. Well done Colchester ZooThank you so much for your feedback following your recent visit, we are pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable day with us. - Realview ReviewsPlymouth, United Kingdom81 contributionsBrilliant experience - would revisitLoved this zoo, the view of the animals was incredible and for a short person that’s amazing. Only downside was that not a lot of the cafes were open with it being winter so took us ages to find a cuppa. That being said the animals looked so well looked after and very happy in their environments so that was awesome to see, didn’t have much interaction with the staff so can’t comment on that but overall a very good experience and easily filled a day. - iamRayRayLondon, United Kingdom369 contributionsGreat time at the Zoo! Highly recommendBeen to many zoo's over the years, this is a great zoo. Size is good enough so my little one (3 years old) could pretty much walk around the entirity of it without needing a pram. Weather was hit and miss, sun and heavy rain, but plenty of inside space to duck away in and avoid it. Along with keeping the little one entertained for enough time. The animals are all in great shape, there is clearly a lot of time and effort put into the welfare of the animals which is great to see. The enclosures are clean, the flow of people worked and never felt too crowded at any spots. Plenty of expansion work / improvements still ongoing which is good to see. Would happily visit again!Thank you so much for your feedback following your recent visit, we are pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable day with us. - Julia SHertfordshire, United Kingdom34 contributionsA good day out for most!.We haven't been here for about 8 years, and it is still as I remember - animals all over the place and very hilly in parts. The animals seemed all very well cared for and their enclosures seemed roomy ( I hope so anyway!). The Red pandas were adorable, the wolves were relaxed and beautiful, the train ride was good, but unfortunately due to the season we could not get close to the Ring tailed Lemur's which was a shame, but we did only pay 1/2 price for January, so not all bad. The staff were very friendly, but as usual the shop catered for kids too much, and I struggled to buy something (which I usually have no trouble with!!), which is a shame as it could sell so many better bits and bobs. Scored 4 only because of the hilly landscape.Thank you so much for your feedback following your recent visit, we are pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable day with us. Four of us have just enjoyed the all day Extra-Ordinary Animal Experience at Colchester Zoo. Extra-ordinary describes it perfectly. The day was absolutely faultless from start to finish. We enjoyed full service private dining for breakfast on arrival, lunch, and tea at the end of the day. Our guide for the whole day was Kelly whose wonderfully engaging personality was matched by her enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the zoo, its history and its animals. She spoke in detail about every animal we walked past and introduced us to sea lions, otters, meerkats, aardvarks, penguins, elephants, giraffes, wolves and a stunningly beautiful tiger. Kelly also introduced us to other keepers who talked about the specific animals in their care. The enthusiasm and absolute joy with which Kelly and her fellow keepers spoke about the zoo and their roles in it was truly infectious. Thoroughly recommended.

Getting more and more expensive considering it takes just an afternoon to get all round the zoo. Annual passes can easily run out as they don't send out renewal reminders. Really need a dry day to visit as not much inside

Visited on October 17th, have been many times before. On this occasion the zoo was swamped with school children. So many in fact that they spoilt my visit, they were pushing people out of the way to get a good view, banging on glass enclosures, shouting at the animals, running around whilst the teachers just stood around and let them get on with it. After lunch I had enough so decided to go.
I e mailed the zoo asking why so many schoolchildren are allowed to visit at once and asked if there were days when there were no school visits, no one bothered to respond.
It’s a great zoo, animals are well looked after and the keepers do a great job however if the management allow school parties to come and run riot I won’t be back.

We bought online which as others have said is cheaper but o believe it is absolutely possible to buy on site. Also, buying online enabled us to add on things like feeding experiences (which were actually really reasonable) which have to be pre booked in advance.

Hello,
I live in the Netherlands and going to England in 2 weeks and want to visit colchester zoo and want to book an animal experience. I am looking and like the giraffes, pinguïns, aardvarks and armadillos. Anyone done one of these. How was it like do you get to feed them and get really up close. Can you make photos during this experience for my photobook

They all sound good. There’s a feeding experience you can do in the zoo also - you pay £20 I think and up to 5 people can feed the giraffes or the elephants so that is something you can look to do. It is just feeding but it’s great and means you can do this as well as the experience. You have to book it though and ideally in advance as they can go quickly

If bringing a picnic in the winter months, are there designated indoor areas where we can eat? If not, does anyone know if you’re allowed to eat your own food in the cafes? I know this isn’t usually the case but in light of the recent (Jan 2020) terrible reviews about the eateries, I don’t feel inspired to dine there!

There are plenty of areas for picnics inside and out and I’m sure there are heaters as well. We went there in December and people were having picnics.

The hyena encounter is more of a behind the scene experience facts from the keeper and that you get to feed them etc but not touch them.
planing to buy online, do we need to show proof of id at the entrance? is it still a good idea visiting in a rainy day?

If you don’t mind it , It’s good on a rainy day as it won’t be too busy
No proof of ID need it but you’ll need the car you paid with

Do they ell family tickets. I’m a single dad with a 17 year old 14 year old and a 6 year old. Single prices would make it a very expensive day out.

yes they do but children must be below 12. They do TESCO vouchers, so if you shop there it is v. helpful. Anyway look at the website, it does give you all the alternatives.
