It's been nearly 50 years since I visited Colchester Castle when I was a child . Very well worth a visit - excellent historical building and museum. Interactive and family friendly

Built by William the Conqueror (who also built White Tower - part of the Tower of London), the castle is simply packed with history. Whether it's an Iron Age Cauldron found in Colchester (circa 1250 BC) or the numerous Roman and Saxon artefacts, Colchester Museum is the best castle I've seen in Europe to date. I highly recommend the tour... More

What an amazing place to visit ! The castle was built by William the Conqueror in 11th cenutry and is fantastically well preserved. You can feel the history is in every single stone of the castle. Near the castle is situated a 7th century cathedral. Strongly recommend !

Had a great time here, if history is your thing I think you would have a great time, there are some nice interactive aspects for children. It's very different to other castles but in my opinion that isn't a bad thing

There are some very interesting things in here but the information boards in the cases were below knee height so made difficult reading, especially in some of the gloomy lit areas. The artefacts in the cases had no rhyme or reason and didn't follow numerical order which often made it difficult trying to work out where in the case they... More

I grew up in Colchester and finally decided to revisit the castle. It is beautiful with glorious gardens and Castle Park is an amazing place to take children to play or go boating in the summer. However, when I went into the castle itself I felt that it needed a serious amount of 'bringing-into-the-21st-century'. There is a lot of interesting... More
