May be a little costly at £7.95 but the museum is packed with history of Colchester and especially the castle. You can add, for £1 a mini tablet that you can use at 20+ locations to provide additional views and information (well worth it). We did not take the optional guided tour (there is a cost) that looks at the... More

Although we live in Essex, we have never been into Colchester town centre. My husband went to the Museum when he was a child and hasn't been since. We were all fascinated by what we learnt and spent a few hours in the museum. We paid £3 extra for the tour and we were not disappointed, this takes you to... More

As England’s oldest recorded town, I suspected Colchester’s Castle Museum would hold some interesting history. It certainly does, and it presents it very well indeed. But I wasn’t prepared for the surprise of the guided tour of the foundations of the Roman Temple that the Norman castle was built on top of. Or the video installation where you can drive... More

Lived in Colchester 48 years and watched it go from a museum located in a castle to a modern establishment. The recent refurb has ripped the guts from the castle and turned it into a modern museum destroying any heritage it ever had.Compared to other castles around England its not really worth visiting.......1 out of 5 is the least I could... As part of short break we visited the Castle Museum and Castle Park. Museum; What an excellent Museum this is. We spent a whole morning here, travelling from the Neolithic age to the present day through exhibits and the interactive tablets you can hire for£1.00, that helps bring so much of the story alive. There are some pretty amazing exhibits... More

My partner first visited the castle 30 years ago and she was amazed at the difference; more a ruin back then with perhaps more atmosphere, but now a stunning collection from antiquity through the ages presented very well would take more than a day to appreciate. We bought an annual pass as I'm sure we'll visit again to spend a... More
