    Well worth a visit
A wonderful visit, the blue ceiling was amazing, Jim the guide, so knowledgeable and Julie on the door was extremely helpful! We loved the medieval features, particularly the paintings behind the choir stalls. We enjoyed hearing the organ scholar practicing… And how lovely that this is still a donation Cathedral… go and donate!
Thank you very much! We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit.

Enjoyable, enlightening experience. Well worth a visit
Impromptu visit to the Cathedral whilst on a day trip to Carlisle. Met at the door by Julie who was very knowledgeable and helpful. Came and chatted to us while walking round made us feel very welcome especially when she found out it was my birthday. Also a shout out to James in the shop. Julie certainly made our day
Thank you - I will pass on your kind feedback to our volunteer team.

Located less than ½ mile from Carlsile Castle
It started out as St Mary’s Priory which was built in 1133 by King Henry I and built with red sandstone. It has 14c stained glass in the east window, with a blue painted ceiling with gold stars, Painted Panels, and nice carved misericord’s. Two Runic Inscriptions are located within the cathedral. We arrived at the end of evensong, and enjoyed an organ recital as we walked around the cathedral.
    Thank you for visiting!

Great cathedral and staff so friendly
Popped in on a rainy day and got the warmest and friendliest welcome from Julie at the door. We then had a lovely short guided tour from Maurice, very knowledgeable. What a treat to hear the organ. The triptych from Antwerp is amazing and the ceiling is gorgeous. Definitely recommend.
Thank you very much, I will forward your kind words to our lovely volunteers.

    Well worth your time
Very worth a stop, you are immediately welcomed at the front, I think we were welcomed by a very lovely lady called Julie. The cathedral is very beautiful and has lots of history to it. If you can, get yourself a guide, it's about 20 minutes and they tell you all about the cathedral and will try to answer any questions you have, I think we had a man called Maurice. The guides are easily recognisable by the grey cape/robe things they wear. Everyone there knows a lot and are eager to tell you so take advantage. It was a lovely time and completely free, although at the end you will probably want to donate because it was so nice. They also have a cafe which looked quite nice, we didn't go in though.
Thank you very much, I will forward your kind words to our lovely volunteers. Glad you enjoyed your visit!

A Gorgeous Venue for a Graduation!
I have now been to two graduations; one at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool and one at Carlisle Cathedral. On paper, the Philharmonic Hall should be the better venue for a graduation. I would disagree with this as I actually found Carlisle Cathedral to be nicer. It's a gorgeous building which the staff clearly look after well. There is a good amount of seating, all of which is comfortable if you are attending some kind of service. The only disadvantage is that some of the seating doesn't give a fantastic view of the front area of the cathedral, although there are TV screens located around the cathedral. Overall, I'd definitely recommend paying a visit to Carlisle Cathedral if you're in the area!
    Thank you!

Well worth a visit - and it's free!
I love a cathedral for the sense of permanence and history you get as you enter. This one had good info boards around, and helpful staff ready to step in as needed. As ever with such places, the stained-glass windows were amazing, as were the ceilings. There is a "recommended" donation, but it is free to enter if you wish.
    Thank you very much.

    Interesting place of history
This is a very interesting place to visit. Complete free to enter however a donation would be appreciated. Members of the church on duty were friendly and helpful and approachable, willing to answer any questions you have. Several places inside to sit down and reflect on any problems you might in your life. The museum underground is very interesting and informative of past history of Christianity throughout Cumbria extending into parts of Europe with past kings and queens influenced by politics of the era. Easy to spend nearly 2 hours here if tour cathedral effectively.
Thank you very much for your review and thank you for visiting.

    Amazing Cathedral welcome.
We were met inside by an amazing volunteer guide who really made us feel welcomed and gave us lots of information about the history of the cathedral. She also pointed us in direction of a beautiful organ recital that day by the resident organ scholar. The same guide gave us some really useful tips about local eating out and places to visit. This is an absolute treasure of a place to visit.
Thank you very much for visiting and for writing this lovely review. We hope you can visit us again soon.

    Beautiful building.
Beautiful building. Very welcoming. Had a knowledgeable guide giving us information and answering questions. Interesting history and lots to see. A must see is the painted barrel roof. Cafe next door very clean with a good selection of cakes. Dogs allowed in the cathedral - always a good sign.
Thank you very much for your review.

Although situated in the city centre, Carlisle cathedral is in a very peaceful gated precinct off Castle Street. The precinct also encompasses the Fratry (or refectory) with its attractive new extension as well as the Deanery, the Prior’s Tower, Bishop Smith’s Registry and the Canons’ houses. The Gatehouse leading to Abbey Street dates from 1528.

Carlisle Cathedral is the second smallest of England's ancient cathedrals and has a long and turbulent history. And to best understand this it is perhaps worth noting that because of its position near the current Scottish border, the city has been fought over by the Scots and English for centuries. Indeed, such turbulent status means that Carlisle is unique among England’s oldest towns and cities in that it doesn’t appear in the Domesday Book (‘cos it was Scottish?) and it is the only place to have been added to England since the Norman conquest.

The Cathedral started life as a Norman Priory Church in 1122, becoming a Cathedral in 1133 simply because the area was still considered unruly and unstable, and as Henry 1 wished to impose his authority, he created the Diocese of which Carlisle was the centre - a Cathedral being the perfect symbol of that authority.

There is much to see, and highlights for me were the treasury exhibition downstairs - not so much for the actual treasures which I always consider to be a vulgar part of religion, but for the very good information boards.

I also enjoyed looking at the magnificent east window, but couldn’t help wondering what the window designer might have said when he looked at the huge altar set in front of it, effectively blocking out a large part of his glazing masterpiece!

And the choir is well worth a slow look to admire the fantastic woodwork.

The Cathedral cafe has a lovely indoor and outdoor space and does lovely scones and cake etc. It can get a bit blustery outside with the space acting like a wind tunnel and if a gust of wind gets up outside things can blow over (I have seen several mishaps during the pandemic) and you can end up with food spilled and or dust on your food. But its lovely on a nice bright non windy day for social distancing. Beware inside is nice but small. BEWARE! The procedure has changed. At one time you weren’t allowed to reserve a table until you had ordered food which is fair and notices were displayed to this effect. Now its a free for all so you could find yourself ordering and with no table available as it can get busy. Also the staff has either changed or one has turned into a little jumped up ‘snappy so and so’ namely the older lady with the dark bob. This staff member could do with with customer service training the other staff used to be lovely and friendly. The Staff used to give you a tray when you ordered food (i.e. cakes coffee and scones etc) at the till point counter. Now the trays are and cutlery are at the beginning with most people missing out on collecting a tray or cutlery before they order then they can’t carry items away (staff and particularly this lady seems to take great delight) in watching customers struggle seeing they have not collected a tray then they have no choice but to move back very close to other customers waiting in line to pay and order (not the best covid protocol) to retrieve a tray and cutlery. A better solution would be for staff to give out trays as they did before or keep trays and cutlery at the end or make them more visible or more prominent position if they are to be kept in a similar area to where they currently are.

This was our first visit to the second smallest cathedral in England. The reason we were dissapointed was that the organ was being tuned and that spoiled the visit for some of our group. The ceiling is amazing though and and on another day would have enjoied the other interesting things more.

Carlsie cathedral is not as well known or as big as better known cathedrals in the major cities, but it is still impressive for its size and is nearly 1000 years old. I was impressed by the beautiful stained glass windows, the starlight ceiling in the nave, and the cathedral organ, whose pipes are nearly as long as a bus. Also downstairs is the treasury, which is accessible to disabled visitors, where there is an impressive collection of artefacts, some dating back to the Roman era, and a history of the cathedral. Admittance is free, but there is a suggested donation of £ 3.

Over the courtyard from the cathedral is the medieval fratery, which contains a cafe which sells refreshments at reasonable prices. Parking is not allowed inside the cathedral grounds for visitors, but there is parking 5 minutes away in Bitts Park. The cathedral is about 5 minutes from the railway station for visitors using public transport.

A very friendly and informative welcome on arrival was a great start to my visit and what to me appears to be a rather austere (for a cathedral) exterior doesn't prepare you for the interior of the cathedral. The ceiling is absolutely incredible, I just couldn't help but keep looking up at it, the most amazingly radiant colours. There is of course much more to see especially the east window dating back to the 14th century. I have been to Carlisle many times over about 40 years but this was the first time I had visited the cathedral. Now I know what I had been missing.

There is just so much to like about this Cathedral. The very charming cathedral close with its views across the Hills, the lovely refectory and then the stunning Cathedral.

The scale doesn't overwhelm and there is a sense of ease, it blends the friendly with the spiritual. The organ pipes defy imagination and the vaulted blue ceiling leaves you reeling- but its all the small touches that make this places. The lovely decorated wooden rood screens with the story of Dt. Cuthbert are excellent as are the amusing storyboards featuring prominent visitors- look out for the man who hated bleached bread and bungalows!

Staff are friendly and this is a splendid place.

A place of calm and contemplation. It is a splendid building, steeped in medieval history. Magnificent stained glass windows, which pulsate vibrant colours. The ceiling of stars and incredible decorative adornment, simply ooze Christianity, worship and adoration. Walking from the outside, into the cool interior you feel the power of worship. Around the nave there are painted screens.
The side chapels are decorative, with the regimental chapel hanging with faded regimental colours. You can explore the items in the treasury, gold and silver alter cups, and items from the past.
When entering the Cathedral, there is no charge, except the expectation that you can spare a few pounds, and also take a trip into the shop on your way out. There are very helpful and knowledgeable guides to chat too.

The Cathedral is very easy to find. It is only a short walk from the railway station and bus station.

But remember, when you are looking up at the magnificent ceiling, to find the lady looking down at you.

Spent a short time here and had a lovely reflective walk around the cathedral. It was beautiful with it's stunning interior and exterior architecture. The outside setting is stunning and inside the stone work and ceiling is particularly beautiful and a must for all to admire. Recommend a visit to all and would return again here sometime.

Just called in here after visiting the castle and it was amazing.
The setting is beautiful. The coffee shop looks stunning but we didn't go in.
Inside the cathedral you can leave a donation, check out the ceiling in the middle very unusual.

A small unassuming cathedral which isn’t anywhere near as grand externally as many others in the UK 🇬🇧. The interior has many interesting and unique features which add interest to the visit. The cathedral cafe offers homemade cakes and scones with hot and cold drinks also available. Good social distancing is also observed and put into practice within both the cathedral and the cafe. Young children have a quiz sheet to complete as they travel around the cathedral.
