About
This museum tells the story of the humble Bedford man who wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress, one of the greatest novels in the English language. During his remarkable life Bunyan was a soldier, tinker, preacher and dissenter, spending 12 years in Bedford prison for illegal preaching. Explore Bunyan’s life and times; see 17th Century Bedford, hear Bunyan tell his story, and discover more about how one man’s story touched the world. With family trails, holiday activities, and exhibitions there is plenty to see and do. See the artwork at the Basement at Bunyan Gallery, with a programme of community art exhibitions and workshops. Visit Bunyan Meeting church, built in 1850 it stands on the site of Bunyan’s original church where he was minister from 1671 to 1688. Scenes from The Pilgrim’s Progress can be found on the bronze entrance doors and stunning stained glass windows.

Community Centre in Burgeoning Museum Quarter
Mar 2020 • Solo
As, arguably, Bedford’s most famous son, it’s fitting that the John Bunyan Meeting House and Museum should be at the hub of its museum and artistic quarter. As a large group of schoolchildren had hurt left I was afforded the luxury of a tour of the museum all to myself. Somewhat unnecessary, however, as the various exhibits ranging from a recreation of the kitchen in his parents’ home in Elphick complete with kitchen utensils and stuffed wood pidgeon to the unconvincingly vast London prison cell which would not be out of place as pat of a campsite gite. Some interesting artefacts ranging from a violin to a wooden pulpit from a Southwark church where Bunyan peached. I didn’t get a chance to see what looked like a rather splendid wooden roofed first floor hall but did get into the basement art gallery where works by two local artists were on display. In a corridor some fascinating sculptures one made out of stringed instruments.

Thank you for your four star review, we are glad you enjoyed your visit. The sets of Bunyan's parents home in Elstow, and the Bedford prison dayroom are intended to give a flavour of life and include some artistic licence. Sorry you misunderstood the prison scene, it would be large for a London cell, but as a day room from Bedford Gaol it would have been full of people and not for Bunyan's personal use. Thank you again

Thank you for your lovely review, we are really pleased you enjoyed your visit. We don't have a lift - but we do have a stair-lift to take visitors up to the museum. It folds out and can be used by people both with or without wheelchairs.

Interesting one room museum

The museum is a good introduction to John Bunyan's life and his his beliefs. It is small museum and a visit of 45 minutes was plenty long enough for me.

AMAZING CHRISTIAN STORY
Sep 2019
It was great to visit a place commemorating the writer of Pilgrim's Progress and other works. An amazing man who was imprisoned (12 years) for his faith in Jesus, but prison did not deter his pilgrimage or preaching.

Thank you for the review, we are sorry you had problems with parking, Bedford parking can be difficult - Lurke Street multi-storey is the closest car park. We hope you enjoyed the visit once you found us

We decided on a trip to Bedford to visit a vegan market and popped in here whilst we were there. It is an interesting place well laid out and gave plenty of information on John Bunyan.

More Than Pilgrim's Progress
Aug 2019
I found the John Bunyan Museum very interesting. There were plenty of people about to answer any questions you had as well as tell you much more about Bedford's famous author. As well as writing he also preached and went to speak in many surrounding areas. There was also information about his family and how he lived.

There is an excellent gift shop and there was also a gallery in a separate room when I visited.

Worth a visit - place of calm
Jun 2019 • Solo
Visited on a Saturday morning not longer after it opened.
The small museum focuses on the live and legacy of John Bunyan.

Good to see the historical context of the time and how Pilgrims Progress came to be written.

Admission is free - worth a donation and has a small gift shop to keep the museum going

Inspired by a man who changed the thoughts of a nation
Apr 2019 • Couples
This is quite a small museum and can be fully-absorbed in about one hour. It tells the story of John Bunyan who, in spite of immense personal trials, wrote 'Pilgrim's Progress' which is one of the most widely-read books in the world. Bunyan was a man of christian principle which led to his imprisonment for about 12 years. Original paperwork form his lifetime is available to view. The meeting house [church] next door has some beautiful stained glass windows. Both are well worth a visit
