I cycled the Cinder Track otherwise known as the Scarborough to Whitby Rail Trail. It was a fine crisp Winter's day, the gradient is steady, approaching 1 in 39 at the steepest point towards the 630 feet elevation above Ravenscar. A fascinating story of a Victorian tycoon purchasing an entire village is depicted on the large information board at the... More

There are so many high points on this route and if you are cycling you can do Scarborough to Whitby quite comfortably, especially those 'cheats' on electric bikes. Cloughton tea rooms, Hayburn Wyke pub, Ravenscar tea rooms, Robin Hoods Bay, loads of pubs, cafes and a notable fish and chip shop. Arrive at Whitby and there is plenty to do... More

Perfect for a walk or a cycle ride. We cycled from Newby near Scarborough, to Ravenscar and back. There is a gentle gradient in places but otherwise pretty level. Plenty of tea rooms (converted stations) and pubs scattered along the route. Great views from Ravenscar and great villages en-route

Starting from Scarborough this is a great walking or cycling trail. Following the line of the old railway it's gentle inclines or easy enough for most. We have ridden it numerous times over the years but usually only as far s the lovely pub at Hayburn Wyke where we stop for lunch and visit the waterfall into the sea. Great... More

Well positioned path away from traffic, goes through lovely countryside, passes cafés and pub along its route for refreshment. Easy access from a variety of places en route.

We walked part of the former railway line, now used by cyclists and walkers..and occasional horse riders ! The temperature on the day we walked from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby was very warm, so we just ambled along , taking our time...as the Cinder Track remains on level ground, it's an easier way to walk than compared with the... We had done the Whitby end of this trail before but not this way. Great safe ride for the kids, as 99% on a cinder track. Just a few spots where we had to cross a public highway. Station tea rooms at Cloughton looked good, but was closing when we passed by!

Stayed in Whitby 23/24th September. We are relatively new to cycling and decided to cycle Whitby to Scarborough and back in the day. Great cycling but a lot more ascent than we thought and expected,Robin hoods Bay to Ravenscar is a long uphill ascent of around 6 miles but wasn't to bad, downhill from Ravenscar to scarborough, the tea rooms... Unfortunately Some parts of this trail have been used as a dumping ground for old kitchen appliances and rubbish which not only spoils the view but also could be a danger to children. We walked some distance down the track, didn't see any cyclists though this is a popular route to bike along. It's a great shame that the Scarborough... More

You can walk cycle run all the way from Scalby to sands end past Whitby on the old railway passing haybern wyke pub on the way why not call off and have a walk down to the rocks, you can almost here the ghostly steam trains that used ride these ways.
