Where to begin? We just finished an incredible 7-day adventure exploring Shetland and Orkney Islands with driver/guide Terry of Best Scottish Tours. The trip was everything we hoped/imagined it would be and more. I believe it was BST’s first tour that included Shetland, but with Terry’s expert guidance, we would never have guessed. The islands are very different but each is stunningly beautiful with warm and welcoming people. This trip was the second we’ve taken with BST, having done the Islands and Highlands with the Jacobite Steam Train in 2019. At the end of that incredible trip, we knew we wanted to return, but to visit some place remote and quiet. Shetland, especially, and Orkney fill the bill!
We’re grateful to BST for taking on the planning. Every detail was perfect, from the 14-hour ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick; to the lovely hotels; great breakfasts and dinners; historical and cultural sites; and the jaw-dropping scenery. But best of all was Terry. We feel as if we have made a wonderful new friend. We felt comfortable with him right off the bat. He quickly figured out what kinds of things we especially like and worked in many experiences not on the itinerary. He even arranged for us to visit a sheep farm in North Roe, Shetland, about as far north as you can get, for a session with border collies. We were each able to work with a dog by ourselves, then we watched in awe as the dog took off using commands from the owner to bring in 35 or so sheep. It was an amazing and thoughtful surprise and treat!
Terry is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Scottish history, culture, geography, natural history, whisky, etc. The information he provided was so helpful. We could ask questions, and Terry would know, or research the answer.
I need to also add that I have many food allergies. I gave my list to BST and they contacted the hotels to be certain each could accommodate me. I felt completely at ease when it came to meals.
You absolutely will not go wrong in choosing Best Scottish Tours. If you don’t see exactly what you want, contact the company and explain your interests. They will devise a perfect itinerary for you.

My wife and I returned from the 9 Day West Coast Islands, Wild Highlands & Puffins trip two weeks ago. This was a trip we had to postpone from 2020 due to the pandemic. This trip is more focused on the beautiful scenery and wildlife than touring castles and cathedrals, although we saw a few of those too. The tour was wonderful beyond expectations!
Our driver, Matt, was very knowledgeable about the history of Scotland and about the plants and wildlife and had an obvious love for all things Scotland. His enthusiasm rubbed off on us and we came to love Scotland also. We were on a lot of single track roads and we appreciated that Matt was a very skilled and patient driver. He learned what each of our particular interests are and he made sure to share information about and to make stops at places that fit those interests.
Accommodations were excellent and the breakfasts and dinners were very good. Several of the places we stayed had walking trails adjacent to them and we enjoyed exploring those. Each day Matt made sure we were in a nice village for lunch. The van we used was clean, seemed to be well maintained, and was a good size for our 8 person group. Our fellow travelers, whom we did not know before, and including Matt, became our traveling friends. Everyone in our group was kind, interesting, and easy going.
If we are able to take another tour of Scotland, and I hope we do, this is the only company I will consider using. You will probably pay a bit more for a small group tour compared to a big bus tour, but I believe the benefits of a small group make it worth it. The small group allowed for flexibility in our itinerary each day, allowed for accommodations in smaller and beautiful hotels/guest houses, and the van was able to travel on single track roads, many that buses can't take, to beautiful and interesting off-the-beaten-path places.

We are recently back from a 6 day/5 night whisky tour of the Highlands with Best Scottish Tours and we are trying to figure out another trip with them!
Terry's passion and knowledge of Scotland and it's history made for an educational and exciting tour experience.
He was friendly, humourous and pointed out potential itinerary options to consider that afforded us a very personalized experience.
It was our first foray in driving on the "right" side, and with Terry as our driver, we were quickly at ease as he smoothly navigated those single laned scenic roads.
The communication with Best Scottish Tours and the accommodations that were provided were stellar.
All in all a fantastic vacation experience that we cannot recommend highly enough. Looking forward to a return trip hopefully in the near future.

Just returned from a whirlwind 7-day tour of Scotland with Best Scottish Tours. The whole experience was wonderful – the castles, ancient buildings and historic sites, quaint villages, impressive bridges, whisky breweries, majestic mountains, the isles and lochs, and lots of sheep everywhere. The pastoral landscape is beautiful, even in April. Millions of daffodils were in bloom in the fields, yards, and along roadways. Our tour group consisted of just four people from the U.S.A. Our guide, Terry, promptly picked us up each morning and made sure we got our money’s worth during our stay in Scotland. Terry is a walking encyclopedia of Scottish history and taught us a lot about the kings and queens, the Gaelic language, Scottish food, and even facts about American history! Although some of us Americans initially had a bit of trouble understanding him during the first couple of days because his accent sounds just like Outlander’s Jamie Fraser, he patiently repeated what we did not understand. He kept us laughing with his jokes and personal life observations. If there was an unexpected itinerary change due to various reasons, Terry was able to substitute other locales for us to visit. The hotels and bed & breakfast accommodations just got progressively better each night of the tour. A raincoat and comfortable walking shoes are definitely a necessity. Be sure to bring a power adapter suited for UK electrical outlets.

We just returned from our 7 day tour and can’t say enough good things about the experience. Our guide, Duncan, was just the best. He quickly took the pulse of our group and then personalized our stops to fit each of us. We hiked/ walked, visited churches, saw all the major points of interest, shopped and stopped at pubs. He educated us on Scottish history, entertained us with Scottish singing and laughed non stop at our craziness. We left Scotland loving the land, its history and the people. It was much more than just a standard tour- it was a trip to always remember!

The Best Scottish Tours lived up to their name! We recently completed their 12 day Outer Hebrides, Neolithic Orkney &Highlands Tour and I can highly recommend this trip. From the breathtaking scenery to the fascinating history, every day was an adventure. The small group size made touring easy and fun. George, our driver/guide was definitely an asset to the trip. He was a great storyteller and was so knowledgeable about Scottish life, culture and history. He was also very accommodating to our requests and altered the itinerary to suit our group. He also added memorable sites that he knew we’d love to see. George made a fabulous trip even better. We look forward to a future adventure with the Best Scottish Tours.

I just returned from the most amazing trip to Scotland and it was my first time going solo. I loved the small group, which made getting to know people very easy. The trip was expertly planned to take you to the most spectacular views while also providing historical knowledge and culture of Scotland. Our tour guide, Chris, was so personable and could answer any questions thrown at him. The lodging was top notch and my rooms were well worth the additional single supplement cost. I also require a gluten free diet, but all meals included in the trip provided wonderful GF options for me. Lunch stops I usually found a GF soup or baked potato option - just enough to save room for dinner. I highly recommend Best Scottish Tours - they are so responsive from start to finish and do such a great job giving travelers a tour of a lifetime! Do make sure you pack a good raincoat and quick dry clothing. Also, when I go next time, my hair will be long enough for a pony tail as it can be windy!! The weather changes hourly, but that just adds to the excitement!

We had a fantastic experience with Best Scottish Tours, and our guide Jonty deserves a 5++ rating!
The reason for the 4-star rating was that our hotel stay on the Isle of Skye (2 nights) was not up to standard and was run down. When we raised our concerns with Jonty, he promptly communicated them to BST, and we are confident that the company will improve their hotel selection for future tours. As a result, Jonty/BST arranged a special dinner for our group at a phenomenal 5-star inn on the Isle of Skye, which turned out to be my favorite meal of the entire trip. All the other accommodations were wonderful, and the full Scottish breakfasts and dinners were excellent.
From the beginning of our tour, Jonty went above and beyond to make our vacation memorable. On our first day, he gave each of us handmade corsages using local juniper and thistle and made sure we had delightful Scottish treats to enjoy each day while driving and sightseeing. Jonty's knowledge of Scottish history, flora, fauna, and all the attractions was outstanding. He made sure we had the best views along the route, successfully facilitated our interaction with Highland Coos, and had insider knowledge at every stop/attraction. He even provided a personal walking tour at the Jacobite battle grounds and climbed steep hills to capture the best pictures for us. He was always accommodating and willing to make changes to the itinerary, if possible, to meet our requests. For example, we hoped to catch a glimpse of the Kelpie horses, and Jonty somehow adjusted our route so we could pass by them on our last day. His positive, can-do attitude made our trip enjoyable.
The Highland Folk Museum left us a little disappointed, and we all agreed that we would have preferred visiting Edinburgh Castle. One of the highlights for us was Stirling Castle, and we all felt that we would have liked to have a little more time there and possibly have lunch at the castle. We also enjoyed the manor house we toured and all the quaint villages along the way.
If you are thinking about booking a tour to Scotland, we highly recommend Best Scottish Tours. The tour sizes are intimate, with no more than 8 people - in fact, there was only one other couple on our tour, so we had a semi-private tour!

Thank you for your review! We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your your with Jonty and that he looked after you. He puts 100% into ensuring his guests have a great time and get to see the best of Scotland. We are so proud of our driver/guides abilities to not only take a small group from A to B (with lots of points of interest in between!) but to also impart their knowledge and enthusiasm for our small country. We contacted the hotel on the Isle of Skye and raised the issues you mentioned, they assured us this is not the standard they offer guests and will be rectifying all issues. We have a lot of guests who stay at this hotel and absolutely love it so we are confident this wont happen again. We are glad that you travelled with us and had such a great experience, and we hope you are happy to recommend us to friends and family.

Our BST 10 day highland tour was all we could have asked for. The two couples we traveled with began as strangers and ended as friends. Our driver/guide, Colin, made sure that our time in Scotland was all we wanted it to be. He was very accommodating and patient, altering our itinerary to include spots not on the original plan. He even sent photos and videos once our tour was over.
We also did a one day Outlander tour with Dave as our guide. He made the day one to remember with his knowledge and kindness.
Everything about our experience with BST was top notch - from dealings with Jennifer in the office (thanks for answering all of those questions) to our days on the road with a very experienced driver to the fantastic sights we visited in this beautiful country. Thank you BST.

WOW, WOW, WOW! We recently returned from the “7 Day Best of Scotland Tour” and I can’t express enough how fabulous our adventure was! Scotland is a beautiful country with fantastic scenery - we were honored to wake up to beautiful lochs and mountains daily. It was such a respite from our daily life! Our driver Matt was simply fantastic! His wealth of knowledge about Scottish history and wildlife was beyond impressive. He strived to make every part of our trip perfect, adding in small stops along the way that aligned to our interest and seeking out additional information about our heritage clan. After I was home I reflected on how stress free the entire vacation was and I know that was due to incredible planning by Best Scottish Tours. We never had to worry about inn reservations or dinner locations and all of our accommodations were lovely. We will be booking another tour and plan to bring our children on our next adventure. Thank you for our memories that will last a life time!!

Is there a way to get laundry done on the 10 day tour?
Written 4 July 2016
Hi Susan S,
most hotels have a laundry service and on the 10 day tour there are a couple of 2 night stays during the tour where it is possible to get laundry done, normally laundry is done during the day as many smaller hotels don't have night staff.
Once your tour is booked, we would check with the hotels on the way to make sure it is possible to get your laundry done - I hope this answers your question. Regards. Karen.
