I visited here on Sunday 2nd of May 2021 with my wife and 2 year old son whilst we were on a short break across the water in Gourock at a caravan. Our visit to Riverside was not a very good experience for us. My wife had called on Monday 26th April and booked a time with the receptionist for the 3 of us to have a 1 hour swim ‘on Sunday’. The receptionist told us she had booked us in for 11.15 – 12.15 ‘on Sunday’ and my wife said thanks and see you ‘on Sunday’. This was great news for us as the swimming pool at our caravan park was fully booked and because we were still only just coming out of COVID-19 restrictions it was difficulty to get a slot for swimming so we were very happy and excited, so much so that we were willing to pay for a ferry fare for the 3 of us to come over from Gourock exclusively for a swim. We got the 10am ferry from Gourock over to Dunoon to make sure we arrived in plenty of time. We actually arrived at the Riverside centre at 10.40am so still 35 minutes before our allocated time slot. We sat at a bench across the road and had a snack for 10 minutes and then made our way upstairs to the reception of the swimming pool. The 3 of us very excited for our first swim in 6 months! We approached the reception desk and gave our details, ‘are you sure you booked it under that name’ the small aggressive looking eastern European receptionist asked. This receptionist was different to the one who took the booking. ‘Yes, that is our name’ I replied. She then stared at her screen and then stared gormlessly back at us and said ‘I can see here that you’re booked in for next Sunday’. Well…you could have knocked me clean out with a feather duster…After we explained to her about the booking being for ‘Sunday’ last Monday and how for anyone that would imply the next Sunday coming she stared at us again and said she needed to call her manager. By this stage my impatient 2 year old was screaming and jumping on radiators and my even more impatient wife was giving this wee woman the kind of look you give someone who farts in a lift. The manager appeared and confirmed the booking had been made for the wrong date- in a weeks’ time. ‘Have you come far?’ he asked. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He said he ‘might’ be able to let us in as although they were fully booked, one of the people who had booked stated that they ‘probably won’t turn up’ so we were asked to wait at the side until 11.25am (10 minutes after the session started) to make sure this most indecisive customer had in fact made the choice not to turn up but if he did, we were out on the streets and back to Gourock without so much as a belly flop! The manager and receptionist then spent a good 5 minutes starting at the computer screen hoping this would all go away, the sweat running down their backs as I stood defiantly at the other side of the covid protective screen staring at them with the most intense rage. It was now 11.05am and more and more families were coming in (and getting ready to run to the baby changing rooms). This caused a mass of people to be congregated in a small space which was very irresponsible. At about 10 past they let all the other families into the changing rooms but we weren’t allowed to move, my 2 year old was getting very restless but the 2 staff members didn’t seem to care and were sticking to their guns about us waiting until 11.25. By 11.15 my wife had had enough and turned her anger power from a 3 to a 6 out of 10. She made it clear to the manager that this was a damn disgrace and that we wanted in that pool and we wanted in now. He caved in and led us to a secret changing room and then we enjoyed our swim free of charge. We were allocated a fifth of the small children’s pool. The pool itself was very clean and the big pool looked great as well. We had a good time in the pool. The 2 members of staff were nowhere to be seen when we came out. I think an apology for the way we were treated like 2nd class citizens was the very least we deserved.

Nowhere secure to leave belongings
Jul 2019 • Family
We visited here whilst on holiday. We paid to get in then was told there were no tokens for the lockers - they had none left (the pool had less than 30 people in it, including kids). We then were asked if we had any old £1 coins as they would fit. The staff then produced a list of lockers that worked without tokens. These were all in use. It meant one of us staying out the pool with all our belongings, handbags etc, not ideal. Staff unhelpful and shrugged when we asked what to do.

Not Impressed with jobsworth lifeguard.
Jul 2019 • Family
I went during the summer holidays with my 8 year old son who goes to swimming lessons and can swim. As my son hadn't been to his lessons due to them being off for the holidays, I thought that I would take him swimming to practice his lengths so that he hadn't gotten too rusty over the holidays. The lifeguard told my son that he must do two lengths in front of him if he was to be allowed to swim in the majority of the large pool or he would need to stick to the baby pool or shallow end. My son successfully did 1.5 lengths and was told to go to the baby pool or shallow end. How are children meant to practice this if they are not allowed to? Also bearing in mind that I didn't leave his side the entire time he was in the large pool, I felt this to be ridiculous! My son was really upset and I am worried that this has knocked his confidence. This lifeguard requires some serious training in people skills. Anyway, we won't be back, and if you have children with you, I would think twice before visiting.

Great pool and gym facility
Apr 2018 • Family
Had a visit with children fiat. Was able to use the gym as visitors and found to be well equipped with latest kit. Nice views along the bay.
Also had a great swim. Timed it well for when lane swimming started at 3.30. I was wanting to swim a lot of lengths and pool was quiet. Water was clear and bright whole area seemed clean and bright. Will definitely be back.

Decent pool with a flume/float sessions - helpful leaflet worth looking out for.
Oct 2017 • Family
We were there on a school holidays and popped in at the start to find out about opening times and were given a leaflet which explaied what was on and when. Depending on the days there was flume, big floats sessions etc . Some of these were only for 8 years old plus.
The changing rooms and kids pools were as you would expect but they kids pool had a wee slide which was great for the little ones.

Afternoon visit with 2 young grand children
Jul 2017 • Family
We were staying for 4 days at Hunter's Quay holiday park that had its own 2 pools but we were attracted by the adventurous activities on a printed grid I picked up at the pool reception.
Only when we arrived threads to do the inflatable obstacle course were we to,d that children had to be over 8 years and able to swim 2 lengths ( the same rule for them to use the large pool.
We waited until the end of the obstacle session then went into the pool area only to find that I could not swim lengths in the big pool and leave the 7 year old to play in the small pool with a few mats.
Consequently I had to get the 7 year old to stand on the side while I went up to the bigger pool to see my 9 year old practice diving ( after she had swum her 2 lengths for the lifeguard)
It's good to be vigilant but with several life guards on duty and few people in the pool it was disappointing not to be able to have an adult swim.
Then when we got out yo shower the semi circle of showers pool side were occupied by a group of American girls showering copiously as they were staying in a church and dud not have shower facilities there😢
In the changing room there was only 1 hair drier and you had to use 20 pieces.
( the lockers don't take the New £1 coins and you need yellow plastic tokens from reception.
There us a good cafe with viewing glass and for swimming competitions there are several fold up rows of seating pool side.
Disappointing.

Lovely pool but........
Apr 2017 • Family
Had a great fun session yesterday. Giant inner tubes in the pool. All the kids had a great time and the lifeguards are brill. Never once heard any of the lifeguards blowing whistles or shouting at the kids. Just the way it should be. Good old fashion fun time.
The downside - the changing rooms and toilets are smelly & dirty, cubicles are too small. Spend sometime throughout the day cleaning and this would be 5* plus facilities.
Also, Shame the cafe shuts at 3.30pm especially during school holidays.
Over all, great pool, brill lifeguards, swimming is cheap just work on cleanliness .
Will definitely be back on my next visit to Dunoon.

What refurbishment?
Apr 2017 • Family
Went here for my step daughters birthday and after long awaiting for the refurbishment to be finished we were looking forward to it. Upon arrival we realised it was more tax payers money wasted on nothing. But we'll put that aside for the time being. A short while after entering the pool I took my son up to the deep end of the big so he could get better practice only to be informed when we returned to the shallow end by an extremely rude and power hungry life guard that "my son looked tired" and "from now on I was to keep him in the shallow end or the baby pool"! ( my son is 10 and can swim perfectly well). I was fuming! A short while after I approached the "life guard" and told him in no uncertain terms that he had no right to give me parenting advice ( he couldn't of been older than 19) and that they're sign clearly states "no non swimmers beyond this point" and that my son could swim. Thankfully he stayed away after that. The rest of the staff were fine. So all in all the kids enjoyed themselves but we turned up expecting good things from the refurb and all we got was disappointment and a telling off from a power hungry teenager. We won't be heading back anytime soon. This is one of the reasons dunoon is failing as a town. We will go to the waterfront in greenock or hunters quay from now on. Not impressed.
