Beautiful building along Lichfield Street.
Oct 2020 • Friends
Although I never visited Wolverhampton Art Gallery I was totally impressed with this building.
A Grade II listed building, funded and built by Philip Horsman from designs from architect Julius Chatwin and opened to the public in May 1884.
I loved the look of the building, the facade is stunning, there are sculptured frieze's depicting 16 characters representing arts and craft ,its such a photogenic building, makes for some great photographic opportunities and is easy to locate along Lichfield Street.
Most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Victoria and Albert watercolours
Sep 2020
Visited Victoria and Albert watercolours from the Royal Collection. Lovely pictures, colours still vibrant, labels good and informative - free to visit. A real treat.

A big 'thank you' to gallery staff members implementing Covid precautions and restrictions who understood why I am not able to wear a mask (breathing issues) and made no fuss, no inappropriate comments or questions.

Bravo gallery team and management. It is heartening in these difficult days to be able to visit a 'provincial 'institution' that cares for its treasures, has good temporary exhibitions, and is clearly a well run and valuable community resource.

A gem

What a lovely place! I went in by chance and stayed far longer than I thought I would. Varied exhibitions, well curated. The spacing and variety ,so well presented.
Located in the middle of town and easily accessible ,I will retutrn again.
This is a place one can keep delving into and finding fresh delights.
Heartily recommend.

Terrible Cafe gone down the nick!
Dec 2019 • Friends
Although the actual art gallery is great this review relates to the cafe only.
Visited on 17/12 to meet some friends between 1-2pm.
Ordered at the counter. I requested cheese and tomato panini, my colleague soup and my other colleague jacket potato.
When my panini arrived it was cheese and ham. Not what I ordered I said but was told it was as no cheese and tomato in the cabinet I ordered from. I disagreed! Anyway said I, I don’t eat ham so I doubt I would have made a mistake. Furthermore the panini looked as if it had been shown the grill from some distance (ie it looked as if it had not been grilled at all!)
My colleague’s soup was lukewarm, she didn’t complain as we were on a time limit anyway, she just left most of it!
When my correct panini arrived I checked if there had been a cheese and tomato in the cabinet. Yes! This panini was better grilled but came on a plate with no garnish at all, what a sorry sight it looked!!
As a resident of Wolverhampton, I have been in the cafe many times over the years. I must say this was the worst experience by a mile that I have had there with regard to the quality of the food!
I certainly will not be visiting against in future unless there is a change in quality and presentation!
There are many excellent cafes in Wolverhampton to choose from which are heaps better. Such a shame!
In the past it used to be difficult to get a seat, no longer, there’s was hardly anyone in there when we visited! Not difficult to see why!! 😫

Very good variety of exhibits in an historic building. Not crowded, so you can take your time and enjoys those areas which have most appeal for you.

Enjoyable Visit
Oct 2019 • Family
We visited here on a weekend in October as the weather isn't great and entry is free. We've not been before and usually go to Birmingham for museum/art gallery visits, but we're glad we came here for a change.
It is of course nowhere near the size of Birmingham, but still found the exhibitions very interesting here and the staff were very friendly. The Georgian exhibition was unfortunately unavailable due to a private function there, so that's something else we can come back to see as well.
We did visit the cafe here, which I thought was reasonably priced.
We enjoyed our visit :)

WELL WORTH A VISIT - ESPECIALLY IF THE POP ART COLLECTION IS ON DISPLAY
Aug 2019
I visited Wolverhampton Art gallery to specifically view the Pop Art, currently on show until September 1st (2019). It is a very impressive selection, including works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Blake, and Eduardo Paolozzi. Other rooms (and staircase) have paintings and sculpture presented sympathetically alongside ceramics, metalwork, textiles etc - but the Pop Art collection is the highlight, and has international significance. It should be on permanent display.
The Art Gallery is about a ten minute walk from the railway station.
