Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Guides knew their subject, however their patronizing, ageist and officious manner tainted the trip. Instead of a snarl, a simple smile and "good morning" works. Coach with lumpy seats and non functioning toilet was unsuitable for 53 retirees on a 13 hour journey. Too much crammed into three days. 7AM breakfast (6AM with time change) and one hour for lunch was not conducive to a relaxed experience. Strenuous walking with no regard to many aged 70+ passangers. Despite saying "we'll go at the pace of the slowest person" guides raced ahead leaving some behind and searching for the bus. Never again!

This experienced and comprehensive tour company led by Jo Gumm, organized the weeklong trip of a lifetime led by a battlefield guide of a lifetime, Andy Johnson (RAF retired), for my History Boys Bookclub in the Fall, 2022.

We stayed at superb hotels, ate and drank very well, and saw more than we ever thought possible. And they provided a very comfortable bus and knowledgeable driver to get us around Lincolnshire and East Anglia.

We visited remarkable Bomber Command and Eighth Air Force sites and viewed airfields, planes, memorials, museums and cemeteries.

Andy Johnson, our licensed guide, was always thoroughly prepared, engaging, and friendly. He shared his remarkable historical and local knowledge with us, and answered every detailed question we put to him.

We will never forget this well planned and executed tour that exceeded our demanding expectations. We highly recommend this tour company and guide. If you plan a similar tour, this is the company with the expertise to take you and your group exactly where you want to go.

My family recently went on a 4-day tour from London to Normandy. From the beginning, Jo was so helpful with helping us plan this tour. Our tour guide, Andy, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. He made our trip so special and enjoyable! Thank you In the Footsteps for such an incredible tour!

This was a custom designed tour by our guide Andy Johnson. Over five days we visited numerous US and British WWII bomber bases and museums. The guide was fantastic, accommodation first class, meals terrific. I highly recommend “In The Footseps” and guide Andy

This customised 3-day trip out of London exploring Australian involvement in WW1 on the Western Front was an absolute highlight of our trip to Europe. Living in Australia we hear lots of stories about how and where a lost generation of young Australian men fought in France and Belgium in WW1. To see the actual locations where those battles happened and the consequences in the many war cemeteries dotted around what is now a peaceful countryside was a great privilege and very humbling, for my small, multi-generational family group.

The knowledge of our guide David was unparalleled and his personable and honest nature suited our family perfectly. He was able to adapt his responses to the different levels of interest shown by the various members of our group and went out of his way to do research that meant the sites we visited and discussions we had were relevant, interesting, informative and at times breathtakingly emotional.

The organisational support from Jo and her team in putting together the trip was first rate. Her responsiveness and willingness to delve more deeply into what we wanted to achieve on the trip were a great benefit as was her assistance in organising comfortable and appropriate transport and accommodation.

I could not recommend this company highly enough.

My husband and I had one of the best experiences touring Normandy D-Day. Exploring all the bunkers, hearing the stories, and visiting Pegasus Bridge.

We followed that with a ferry over to England and did the William the Conquerer story — “Battle of Hastings” with tour of Pevensey Castle.

Unexpected extra bonuses was viewing the original Bayeux tapestry almost 1,000 years old; all hand sewn, telling the story of William the Conquerer. Also while traveling, our tour guide stopped for us to get a view of Beachy Head - the beautiful white cliffs near Hastings.

Our guide, Bob was top-notch! Super knowledgeable and fun to be with. He knew all the roads and locations and we could hear the excitement in his voice of telling us the history that took place at each location.

We will be coming back for our next tour of Germany in the near future. Hoping we can have Bob again! 🤗

Thank you “In the Footsteps Battlefield Tours” for taking such good care of us!

We recently spent a week with Ian guiding us through France and Belgium to learn about 4 family members who served in WW 1 and 2. We had only fairly general information about their service, and wanted to know more.

Ian’s background as a retired member of the British military and his personal interest in military history meant we got such detailed and complex information all tailored to giving us the backgrounds of our family soldiers’ movements and places they were killed, captured or injured.

In 2 cases, our soldiers were killed in action but remain ‘unknown’ as to their final resting place, however, Ian was able to study maps and military records to determine where they were located during the battle they succumbed to. It meant a great deal to both of us to know where they had been when they died in service of their King and Empire. We were gather information that can now be recorded in the family’s history.

Jo and Ian Gumm have been extremely flexible with us during the COVID delays we encountered as this trip was originally scheduled for 2020. They worked with us on every step and iteration of the rebooking process we encountered as this tour was an adjunct to a separate trip we were also making prior to starting our travels with ‘In the Footsteps’.

We chose this company because we didn’t want to just join a large generic bus tour that would not focus on the Canadian details we were seeking. We wanted specific information and we got it in large quantities.

At the end of our trip, Ian provided us with a written summary of our days on the battlefields and gravesites we visited, along with many photos. As this was a high intensity tour with a great deal of military detail (which is not our strong suit), the written report has been vital to make sense of what we got to see.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of a loved someone’s military experience, this company does that - literally!

In closing, this was a highly personalized, well planned and guided tour that focused on our specific questions; Ian did exactly that for us. Jo, who manages the bookings, gave us options for travelling, hotels, and all available services. She made the arrangements, even going so far as to ensure we got picked up where we left our other trip and we got to the airport to get on our way home afterwards.

Adrian was incredible. Knowledgeable, thoughtful, helpful and friendly. We still keep in touch. His research prior to our tour on father was second to none.
