Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was trying to go to Muckle Skerry, but they don't go that far. It is out of their usual range and capabilities. It seems that different boats specialize in touring different places based in part on where they are moored and their boats capabilities. Each location needs to be covered by different types of boats. I found the boat to take me to Auskerry (a day of waves, spray and brisk wind) and another for Copansay small boat with light wind and waves, The islands with ferry service were easily visited sometimes taking a car or going "walk on". However the sailor who goes out to Muckle Skerry was busy smoking haddock for his wife's café. She said that he'd love to go, but she needed him more. (Darn it)
I could have taken The Dawn Star out to Barrel of Butter, but that was a lower priority than the other islands as I have an okay image of that light already. Besides which Orkney has a lot of other places that are well worth going to. There are pristine pre-historic places and unique businesses such as the Bere Mill which is an old mill near to The Brough of Birsey that grinds an ancient grain call Bere (pronounced "bear"). Then in Kirkwall is the St Magnus Cathedral, which is unique and founded in 1137. Unfortunately I've been talking it up so much that everyone wants to go there. Now they have ships coming into Kirkwall with busloads of people wandering around.
From what Dawn Star Folks said they can take up to 3-4 hours for a tour around in Scapa Flow. Of course Scapa Flow is of great UK historical significance.

Visited the major wreck sites in Scapa Flow. Very moving experience. Lawrence gave all the history and background to what happened in both WW1 & WW2. Especially moving over the wreck of the Royal Oak. Also pointed out the wildlife and spotted a peregrine falcon on the cliffs.

My wife bought me this trip on the 'Dawn Star' as a birthday gift. Absolutely great three hours out on Scapa Flow in amazing weather - couldn't have picked a better day. Hot, sunny and great visibility. I really enjoyed chatting to Laurence about Orkney and he was very knowledgeable and interesting. I saw plenty of wildlife and he also took me to the site of the wreck of the 'Royal Oak', marked by a buoy. We have been visiting Orkney for around 30 years now but it was great to see it from a different perspective. I would thoroughly recommend a trip on the 'Dawn Star' to anyone visiting Orkney.

Laurence's boat is very comfortable, and he provides coffee, chocolate bars and binoculars if you need them. He is very flexible in his bookings - reorganising the timing of our trip so that we could catch a flight with enough time to spare. Do try and book with him well in advance though - the weather can upset trip timings, and his boat only holds six passengers. He is very knowledgeable, both about the history of Scapa Flow and the wildlife and has a large folder full of pictures, articles and other information to add to what he says. We even saw a peregrine falcon, which is quite a rarity. Thoroughly enjoyed the three hours, and would recommend it to anyone - young or old.

My family and I booked this boat trip while holidaying in Orkney. This trip was amazing we had a great view of the Churchill barriers and we were delighted to see a good selection of wildlife. The boat was modern clean and we were given life jackets. This trip was well worth the money.

Great way to see Kirkwall from a different perspective - the captain did a great job and provides binoculars to see plenty of wildlfe. He also gives some good WW II history when the British Navy used this as a base.

Great trip for young and old.

We have just returned from a wonderful week on the Orkney Islands and this trip was right up there with the highlights of the week. We did book this in advance before we left for the holiday so maybe do the same as it's a small boat and therefore availability could be limited. The boat is an excellent little boat, taking up to six passengers. It's looks almost brand new and Laurence obviously takes very good care of it. We felt very lucky as there was just me and my Wife with Laurence on the trip and therefore we got his undivided attention and knowledge, and believe me he has plenty of knowledge to share. There was lots of wildlife to see but equally lots of history and it's good to hear about the history from someone who has such good knowledge and can explain everything in such detail. The three hours just flew by and it was a great day.
Thank you Laurence and we wish you a successful season

Booked this trip before we arrived on Orkney. It's a small boat (max 6 passengers). On the day we sailed it was just the three of us, which felt really special. Laurence deliberately keeps numbers small in order to provide a more personal experience and ours definitely was that. He first checked our interests : we said history as well as wildlife. Had close - up views of the Churchill Barriers and learned about the reasons for and manner of their construction. Then on to look at the oil platforms. Laurence told us about the sinking of the Royal Oak, showing maps and photos. We then visited the site of its sinking, which I found very moving. All this time, he was pointing out the wildlife, with binoculars available to borrow. We saw seals, guillemots, eider ducks, terns, shags, fulmars, gulls, kittiwakes, a great northern diver and 2 peregrine falcons. Fabulous. During the trip Laurence provided a welcome cup of coffee and a biscuit. A wonderful 3 hour trip with a knowledgeable local skipper. I highly recommend it and will do it again the next time I'm on Orkney.

A lovely 3 hours on Scapa Flow, Laurence was able to show us both the history and wildlife that are both abundant here. With close up views of the Churchill barriers, the site of the Royal Oak war grave and all the wildlife (skuas behaving badly!), not to be missed.
