Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Damn covid.....you can't enter the broch due to it's narrow stairway but the island is still worth a visit. It's only when you next to the broch that you really appreciate its size.
The walk around the island is well marked.

Due to visit Mousa at 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday 7th June, arrived at 9.30 p.m. to be informed by people in a motor home that trip cancelled due to high winds. No complaint about cancellation but was I informed by email or mobile phone- NO I WAS NOT. Then on Saturday 10th met an American tourist who told me that she went on re-scheduled trip on Friday (from Wednesday). Was I notified - NO I WAS NOT.
REALLY POOR BUSINESS PRACTICE AS HE HAD BOTH MY EMAIL AND MOBILE DETAILS AND I MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME.

The Isle of Mousa and its Broch are a great day trip from Mainland Shetland. The boat trip is only twenty minutes and very scenic. Beautiful views of the Broch from the boat ride. The island is great to hike around and doesn't take too long. Beautiful views off of every coast on Mousa. Love this place!

Mousa makes it on to most people’s list of must dos in Shetland and I can see why, but with some provisos. Boat leaves Sandwick at 1130am and returns at 230pm. . The problem I think is that you have roughly two and a half hours to spend on the island while the circular walk is easily done within an hour. There is only one walk and you are not really allowed to go off piste for fear of disturbing the nesting birds. You can then marvel at the 2000 year old broch but that is hardly going to take you more than 15 minutes. Perfect then for a leisurely day out on a sunny day with picnic and binoculars, but perhaps less so in the rain, with no food and without some means of getting closer to the wildlife.

On July 1, 2018, we took a Viking excursion to Mousa Island. A short drive from Lerwick to the Mousa Ferry. The ferry takes you to the uninhabited Mousa Island, Note: there are several hundred sheep on the island. Once there you can hike to the historic Iron Age Mousa Broch, a dry stone Iron Age fortress tower built 2,000 years ago. Upon arriving at the Broch you can go inside and visit several rooms and climb very narrow spiral staircase to the top, about 3 stories. The trail around the small island is about 3 miles, an estimated 2 hour walk. The hike is fairly easy. You will see a lot of sheep and a variety of birds. The scenery is beautiful with the ocean, cliffs and rolling hills. You need to be aware of the times the ferry will pick you up. There are no restrooms, food or water on the island.

We took the ferry ride to Mousa. Take my advice , listen to the safety briefing. The skipper doesn’t take any nonsense. It’s a short ride across the sound to the dock. From there you have the choice of going left or right to circle the island. It’s not particularly strenuous, being mostly flat. Typical Shetland scenery, low hills with lawn like grass mowed by sheep. Dramatic cliffs and seascapes along the coastline. On the far side are two bays where fences keep you away rom the seal breeding grounds. Take binoculars to best enjoy the wildlife. The broch is an impressive piece of architecture dating back 2300 years. Flashlights are provided to help with exploration but I’d suggest you bring your own as they’re a bit dim. And that’s about it for the island. There’s no cover at all so if it’s raining you’ll need waterproof clothing. On the ride back you’ll be taken by the broch for photo ops and then across the sound to see a broken down broch on Mainland before heading back to the dock.

Learned about broches and this a a great one, but the rest of the island not so much. Without the broth it would be a drive by.

Nice, short boat trip out to this island. It is the home of Storm Petrels but apparently when nesting the adults fly out during the day and don’t come back until night- there is a night boat trip available, but we did not take that trip.
Other gulls and fulmars are plentiful on the island. Beautiful scenery. A Broch which you can climb is also on the island.
Be aware of school and tour groups as you plot which direction you will head in when you start your walk- most people head for the Broch first which makes that area pretty congested; you may want to start off in the other direction.

Mousa Island and its Broch is well worth visiting. You can climb up the Broch but the steps are extremely narrow. The walk to the Broch is also a little uneven. The father & son team who ran the boat service, Rodney and Darren, were very knowledgeable and friendly. The highlight was seeing the storm petrels who nest within the Broch and as our trip was during the middle of the night, the reflection of the moon on the calm sea was also stunning. Highly recommended!

Definitely a must-see for anyone visiting Shetland. Just a short boat ride from Sandwick Jetty - during our trip there was a porpoise chasing the boat! You then have plenty of time to wander around the island, a circuit of which can be done in a couple of hours.
The broch is the main attraction that everyone will make for and it is an absolute must as it is the best preserved example of its kind in the whole of the country. Also unique in that you can climb up to the top - I'm sure the view is impressive but we visited on a foggy day so couldn't see very far! Also lots of wildlife spotting opportunities, with plenty of seabirds and seals at points across the island.
Even through the mist Mousa was an impressive place. Highly recommend a visit if you are in Shetland for a while.

Are there any other boats that service Mousa on Saturday? That's the only day I have free for an excursion there, and the only day that that Mousa Boat Co, doesn't operate.

The Mousa Boat is the only passenger boat to Mousa and has no schedule run on Saturday, however we could do a charter.
