South Mainland excursion for a magical experience!

My wife and I booked with the South Mainland itinerary. We were joined by 6 other passengers in a nice, comfortable minivan and were driven and guided by Grant, the owner of operator of the tour company. We were so lucky that we had great weather as it allowed to appreciate and fully enjoy the beautiful scenery. Grant explained that he was born in South Shetland and proved to be both a very knowledgeable and pleasant guide. None of the places we went to were crowded (no big tour buses to be seen) and Grant explained that a number of these locations were not accessible to the big vehicles. One highlight was walking along a long stretch of beautiful beach to a small island with ancient ruins of a cathedral, but the day was filled with wonderful sights.

I have been on a number of cruises and many, many tours, but this was certainly one of my very favorite places to visit and excursion experiences. I totally recommend it!

The Best Way to See Shetland!

Grant is a fabulous guide and his tours are absolutely the best way to see Shetland. As a Shetlander he really has the inside knowledge to all that is going on in Shetland. We took two tours with Grant, South Mainland on the day we arrived on the overnight ferry from Orkney and then on our final day we toured Unst and Yell. We definitely couldn't pick a favourite tour as they were both highlights. We learned so much about the history of Shetland and also life today on Shetland. Grant is warm and friendly and always ready to answer a question and he add much information to any conversation. His minibus is very comfy, and also can stow luggage if necessary. We highly recommend his tours and were just a little sad that we didn't have time to do the North Mainland tour as well.

Fabulous personalised Shetland Minibus Tour with Grant

A huge thanks to Grant Redfern for providing a fabulous whistle stop tour of Shetland.
We were on the Fred Olsen Balmoral cruise ship and booked the tour with Grant rather than choose the more formal cruise ship tours. It was a great decision. There was 4 of us and we spent almost 5 hours seeing a lot of the favourite viewpoints including Fladdabister, Mousa Broch , St Nina's isle , Sumbrugh head and lighthouse, Mossy hill viewport and also managed to include a few of the famous landmarks from the Shetland TV series and spot some Shetland Ponies and Puffins on the way round. We really enjoyed Grant's friendly and informative commentary and hearing about the Norse/Viking historical links . We would happily recommend contacting Grant of Shetland Minibus Tours if visiting Shetland or having a cruise stop over there.

An absolutely excellent tour

What an unbelievably excellent tour by a supremely enthusiastic, engaging and knowledgeable tour guide. I had the pleasure of attending Grant's 'South mainland tour' encompassing a day of such wonder. The highlight for me was our visit to Jarlshof, which is such a spectacular site to visit, with Grant providing real tangeable insight into such a historically significant place - he really brought the ancient ruins to life.
When I go back to Shetland I will certainly be booking Grant again. This is not a tour to be missed on your visit to Shetland.

Amazing two day tour of the Shetlands

Grant was a fantastic tour guide, who provided us the best parts of the Shetlands over two days, from North to South.
Grant is passionate about his homeland and this is clear during his tours.
He is very personable and knowledgeable and we would strongly recommend him as a tour guide for anyone visiting the Shetlands and who wish to see the sites.

Excellent tour

Grant is an excellent guide. He took us around the northern side of Shetland, explaining and pointing out the places of interest. He told us about the important festival in January, the Up Helly Aa fire festival, showing us the costume he used when his squad had been selected to lead it one year. He also runs a couple of other tours, to the south of Shetland and another to Yell and Unst. I was very sorry that I wasn't staying long enough to go on them. I hope to return to Shetland and most definitely would like to go with Grant again.

A Magical Shetland Experience

We joined two other couples from our cruise ship for the South Mainland Tour. Grant is the owner/operator of Shetland Minibus Tours and he takes great pride in delivering as comprehensive a tour of the South Mainland as time allows. It's amazing that he packs so much in a limited time: walking photo stops of seascapes. not-so-distant St. Ninian's Isle, Sumbrugh Head and Sumbrugh Lighthouse. He knows the roads so well and finds the best views, including the best place to get close-up photos of Shetland ponies. And he provides a local's description of life in the Shetland Islands. It didn't hurt that the weather was glorious, something that Grant assured us doesn't always happen.
Time is limited on the trip and we would recommend bringing a snack with you to tide you over until you return to your ship. We were so busy touring that we didn't take a lunch stop. Grant is the best!

See Shetland as a local

We had a great tour of Yell and Unst yesterday with Grant. Typical Shetland weather with low clouds and intermittent rain, but inside the bus was all smiles and sunshine. Grant was born and raised in Shetland and has the kind of knowledge you only gain as a local. His family still farms a croft and he has a tight connection with the land. He was able to answer every question I asked in a wide variety of subjects. His tour took us to sights off the beaten path as well as those you’d expect to see. I highly recommend him as your Shetland tour guide.

We had 3 Fantastic days doing all 3 of the tours North, South & Unst & Yell with Grant. All were brilliant & Grant is an excellent tour guide & a font of local knowledge. Very relaxed atmosphere with only 8 people maximum per tour & always a delicious lunch stop. We were very lucky to have good weather on all 3 days which made the trips even better. I can't recommend Grant & the Shetland Minibus Tours enough you will not be disappointed. Thanks for 3 fabulous days out Grant you really made our stay special & ticked a few buckets list items for us (St Ninians Isle & oodles of Puffins 😁)

South Mainland tour

I went on one of the south mainland tours with grant while i was in Shetland. The whole tour was brilliant not only did we have time to stop and look at the beautiful sights but we also learned loads about the history. My favorite part was St Ninians beach it was really beautiful. Grant was brilliant at answering all the questions we had and really made an effort to make us all feel comfortable.
Will definitely be back for another tour.
