- Chris MWetherby, United Kingdom1,548 contributionsA comparatively easy to reach good example of Shetland history. This very early well preserved structure is located on the edge of a loch in the outskirts of Lerwick. It is a large round covered stone construction surrounded by outer walls. Once inside the perimeter wall, the area covered is quite large, with a number of passages and places to explore. This is one of the largest of this many structures of this type; only found in Shetland. Worth visiting as the location is quite easy to reachVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2024
- pakabayAdelaide, Australia2,509 contributionsVery impressive, & centralLocated right on the southern edge of Lerwick, this major archaeological site is easy to find & access. It’s also free to enter and accessible 24/7 every day of the year. It’s a very significant site both it terms of the structure size and it’s history, stretching back to around 600BC. There was originally a Bronze Age house, then more buildings & a protective Wass during the Iron Age and later, wheelhouses. Like all Shetland sites, wear good waterproof shoes and be prepared for strong winds & rain at any moment. Access is off the A970 on the southern approach to town, and there is no onsite parking, we made use of the supermarket car park just up the road.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2024
- DabberR12 contributionsDon't pass it by.Fascinating to see the complexity and solidity of this impressive piece of our history. In some ways incongruous with the urban surroundings and yet perhaps we are seeing continuation of habitation here for thousands of years. Parking is not easy, unless you use Tesco's car park (and use the shop too :) ). Easily overlooked but we'll worth visiting.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 June 2024
- Sarah In YorkSheriff Hutton, United Kingdom62 contributionsEasy, flat walk from a Tesco in Lerwick and definitely worth a visit.Unexpectedly amazing. Park in the big Tesco in Lerwick and it’s a 5 minute walk to the broch. A bit like the pyramids just by Cairo, this amazing structure is close by the modern town. It’s well preserved and you really get a feel for how heavily fortified the building was. Huge respect for the builders working around 400BC.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2024

a nice stroll from lerwick town centre and across from a tesco supermarket , this is free to access. A fascinating look back in history , but it is a very short stay , i have to say i was a little unimpressed. A must to see only if your are interested in ancient history but visit jarlshof first and you will get a better understanding

This is an unusual broch in that it has surrounding structures as well. The broch itself is very well preserved and it is fascinating and very enjoyable to wander around. There is some information provided but I was lucky to visit in a tour so our guide gave up more information as well. And it's free and there are no COVID restrictions to worry about!

Park in Tesco and walk to the site. Free to enter, could visit while walking around Lerwick as well. It's a great example of a broch, so worth the visit. Hopefully not with kids running around on your visit!

Recommended to us by one of the locals and was definitely worth the visit. Got some lovely photos there. Pony and horse out front added to the beauty of the place. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Lerwick.

I am not sure how to describe this experience. It looks super small. Okay, a few stones and steps. No big deal. But somehow everything changes as you enter the broch.
Takes you back 100s of years and kinda resets you. What a humbling experience.

The broch is right by Lerwick and so very easy to get to. While it does not have the state of preservation of Mousa, it is well worth a visit. You can wander around both inside at out at leisure and experience an Iron Age broch, The setting, on a small promontory jutting out into the loch, is picturesque and very photogenic. The site is maintained by Historic Scotland, but there is no entry fee. When I was there we had the site to ourselves. There is a signboard with some information but if you are unfamiliar with Iron Age brochs it may be useful to read a bit before visiting as there is no guidebook.

A fascinating look into where people lived . This broch is remarkably well preserved , and a lot of the original structure apart from the roof is still intact . it is an easy 10 minutes from the centre of lerwick . And as you are walking up to it remember to look at the bay and see if you can spot any seals

how far is the boach from the town of Lerwick?
What other sites are there to see in Lerwick?
Can we get around without a car?
Written 28 May 2018
It's about half a mile from town and there's a lovely walk round the headland from Commercial Street. Lerwick is small enough to explore on foot - make sure you leave about 3 hours to do the museum properly - but you'll need a car to explore the rest of Shetland.

How far is Clickimin Broch from cruise port?
Written 7 June 2017
If you have a bit more time you could walk round The Knab. This spit of land to the south of Lerwick provides spectacular views, bracing winds and the chance to see wildlife. It is all on well made paths but is slightly steep in places.
Walk south out of the port along The Esplanade, keep as close to the coast as you can, turning left past the Queen's Hotel onto Commercial Street and keep going, passing the golf course. This takes you on a loop round The Knab, eventually bringing you back towards Clickimin Loch at the Tesco roundabout.
Walk straight out of Lerwick for about 100 yards and the path to the Brochure is in your right opposite a gas station.
Alternatively, turn left past the Tesco store along the coast for the excellent Fjara cafe and the chance to see seals basking on the rocks opposite.
I was in Shetland for work in May and this was our introduction to this amazing island. Allow about 2 hours, more if you want to pause for the sites or the cafe. There may be a bus back into Lerwick opposite Tesco or there may be Taxis. asking the cafe or Tesco
