Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Towards the end of May 2024 my wife and I did two, day trips with James Tait of Island Trails, one to north mainland and the other to the south. His people carrier was extremely comfortable, and he was at pains to ensure that access was easy. James proved to be an excellent guide on both occasions with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area and its history. His passion for the island of his birth was immediately apparent to us and justifiably so.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Island Trails as an essential for visitors to Shetland. In our opinion it was money well spent and we came away with increased knowledge of Shetland and a great appreciation of the island’s stunning scenery.

My daughter and I found James to be thoughtful and flexible, we were travelling late October, so the weather was fickle. James ensured we saw as much as possible, including the journey to Unst in good weather! James was informative on many subjects and our conversations included history, geography, farming practices, television series just to name a few. He kindly planned our days around airport pickup and drop off. Such a wonderful experience - felt more like travelling with a well informed friend! Thank you James - sorry it has taken so long to put this in writing!

My husband and I had a fantastic day with James touring Shetland. We arrived via cruise ship at Lerwick and James picked us up from the port. The itinerary was customized and flexible based on our interests. We loved the scenery and interesting historical facts about Shetland. The price point was extremely reasonable and we felt like it was money well spent for the experience.

James did a superb job of sharing the highlights of Lerwick and the main island in these Shetland Islands! We visited the Croft House Museum, and Sumburgh Head Lighthouse. We saw sea bird nests, petted Shetland ponies and the miniature Shetland ponies. We drove through Lerwick, saw the sand tombolo, drove through the Tingwall Valley and Viking Parliament site, saw the village of Scalloway and spent time exploring the Jarlshof archeological site. We had lots of opportunities to stop and take photos, ask questions. He was very informative and helpful at all times. We highly recommend him if you are every in the area.

We went on a private tour at the end of July for our honeymoon. I apologise for the lateness of this review! We had an absolutely wonderful time with James. He is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and also has an excellent sense of humour. We really enjoy our trip and got to see some beautiful places and amazing wildlife ranging from rare sea birds, puffins and also wonderful chunky seals
We could not be more grateful for James's expertise and company on our tour. We are looking to book again ASAP.

Excellent time with our very knowledgeable guide. Even answered my husband difficult questions. We both had a really good full day around all the landmarks across the South. Stopped for lunch at the Hoswick tourist centre. We both highly recommend this company. Money well spent.

We took a tour of the south mainland with James that had been arranged by our travel company. It was excellent. He brings so much of the tour to life with stories or descriptions that you could never find in a guidebook. He seems to be adjusting his commentary as he gets to know the group better so that it matches their interests. We like walking and at the end of the tour he recommended places we might like to visit later in the week. We were not disappointed. The tour allowed us to get far more from our short visit than we could have anticipated.

We were on a cruise and booked a tour with James the owner and guide of Island Trails. We were just a small group and James was very informative as he has always lived on Island. We visited the Lighthouse, saw the puffins nesting and had a really interesting tour of Jarlshof one of the most important prehistoric sites in Shetland. The Island is very scenic we saw lovely beaches some occupied by seals sunning themselves. We were taken to a museum showing us how the original settlers lived. All in all a very good tour.

In September of 2012 I took a group of ladies interested in wool and knitting to Shetland on a five day tour organised by James. An extremely good time was had by all and James knowledge of the islands and the wool business gave the trip that little extra that all travellers want to experience. In 2013 another fortunate group of Swedish knitters will get to know the islands with the help of James and I look forward to working with Island Trails on many occasions in the future!

Agree with all previous comments. Booked this tour bacause of all favorable comments. We weren't disappointed! James is an excellent tour guide. We toured the South part of the Shetlands and thoroughly enjoyed his narratives and choice of sites, As a native, he had very interesting stories of life on these beautiful islands. Highly recommend him as your guide.
