About
Lochleven is associated with many colourful events and has been visited by countless distinguished personalities during its history. The castle will be forever associated in the memory with another Stewart sovereign, Mary Queen of Scots. She first visited in 1561 as a guest of the owner, Sir William Douglas. But her last stay, in 1567-8, was as his prisoner. It was at Lochleven that she was compelled to abdicate her throne in favour of her infant son, James VI. The castle walls held her for less than a year. In May 1568 she escaped across the loch and before that month was out she was in exile in England. She never saw her native land again. Accessed by small passenger boat. Sailings run on a shuttle basis to and from the island on demand.

    Lovely slice of history
2 boat trips and an island to yourself for a tenner ...... whats not to like? Great little 1/2 day out, highly recommended. Better to pre book online and save your space on the boat you want.

    Excellent experience
The boat is small and holds 12 people, and takes 10-15 mins to reach the island. You could spend a couple of hours here, take a picnic. Toilets are provided. The boat goes back and forwards to the island every 45 mins or so, if there are 12 people in front of you you`ll need to wait for the next boat. Would highly recommend and will do it again.

    Beautiful scenery 😍
This little castle island is absolutely stunning. The views are breath taken. The boat trip out was nice and short and the water wasnt chappy at all. The lovely guys at the boatshed that drives the boat was amazing. The castle itself is stunning. With access to the second and third floor. Stairs are step so be careful but totally worth the visit

A trip to Loch leven Castle is a must if visiting the area.
For £10, you have a return short boat trip across Loch leven and a visit to the island and Castle.
The Castle is steaped in history, Mary Queen of Scots visited 3 times before being imprisoned here.
Kinross House can be seen from the castle directly across the loch.
It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

Nice boat ride to a small castle that sits atop a small island. There were pheasants running around the reserve when we got off the boat. Amazingly preserved area to welcome waterfowl during the season. Just tranquil and quiet.

Fantastic day out, castle is steeped in history. Bring a picnic lunch with you, as there are benches to have such. I have created a video of this experience on the 'Viewing Scotland' YouTube channel for anyone to check out.

We haven’t managed to get to the castle itself, nor to take a boat trip as it wasn’t operating, but we still enjoyed the view across Loch Leven onto the castle. It was worth to make a small detour to Kinross to feel a bit of Scottish history - where Mary Queen of Scots was kept a prisoner for a year and famously escaped from…
