About
A Museum since 1887, Bankfield tells the story of Halifax and Calderdale, using its rich and diverse collections. Set in the attractive surroundings of Akroyd Park, at the centre of Akroydon model village conservation area, this Victorian mansion was the home of local mill owner, philanthropist and MP, Colonel Edward Akroyd. We are a short distance from the centre of Halifax, with free parking and close to public transport links. Bankfield's exhibitions cover local history, costume, art, toys, military history, jewellery and textiles from around the world. Our collections contain objects from Ancient Egypt through to the 21st Century as we continue to collect and preserve items for future generations

Nice old building set in parkland. The gardener needs to get back from his honeymoon quickly, as the accessible entrance is anything but, being overgrown with brambles and flowers. Admission is free but donations are appreciated and you still need to book a slot in advance. The museum is laid out in a series of rooms and there are many interesting artefacts on display but also a lot of information to read; though there are points throughout where you can listen. The upper floor is dedicated to outfits and dresses etc. There is a small selection of gifts in the reception area and a room next to that for a cuppa and a cake.

Local history
Jul 2021
We were surprised how good this place was due to the fact it was free entry. Lots of local history information, really interesting. Due to covid the library was closed, but there was still lots to see.

Weary place..

From the outside it looks boarded up, but when you get in its lovely I side, the paintings on the ceiling are fantastic.

The orientation of the visit is a bit confusing and perhaps jaded by visit a little.

But the clothing r exhibition is brilliant if somewhat small, Victoria's dress and crown replica are fantastic.

Gent Jack's exhibition is small but overrated.
Def recommend the dukes exhibition even if it's to see the VC recipients collection.

Staff are ok, perhaps not I reacting much.

Group Visit
Mar 2020 • Friends
I took a group of 20 adults to see first of all the building itself and secondly Colin Firths costume from Pride & Prejudice.
What a building!!. It must have been a magnificent private residence and the frescoes on the staircase and the beautiful fireplaces are a reminder of this. It is a hidden gem and worth seeking out. Very nice museum full of interesting things. I could have spent all day in here.
and would love to re visit. The costumes were interesting too.
The staff were exemplary, looking after my one disabled passenger and being generally friendly and helpful. We left a £100 donation because we were so impressed.
Other museums in the uk could take a leaf out of their book.
Keep up the good work. You made my day.!

Little gem
Feb 2020 • Friends
I visited this lovely little museum last weekend, when the featured exhibition was costumes from popular TV series. Great to see them up close - Colin Firth’s famous wet shirt from Pride and Prejudice, Suranne Jones’s white ball gown from Gentleman Jack, Aidan Turner’s outfit from Poldark among others. But don’t stop there - there’s loads to see, including a poignant exhibition about World War I, one covering Halifax’s proud textile manufacturing history, Charlotte Bronte’s Thackeray dress and plenty more. Bankfield Museum is a short bus ride out of the town centre. Well worth a visit.

Brilliant Duke of Wellington regiment display
Jan 2020
Visited with my father who served with the "Dirty Dukes".

We were very impressed with detailed displays and information. We spent quite a while in this part of the museum, which was also interesting.

It's free to visit, with a donation box almost hidden away by the door.

I feel they are missing a trick here though, as it would be a lovely setting to host weddings.

Well Kept Museum and Friendly Staff
Oct 2019
We just made it on time to see the Costumes from Gentleman Jack (the staff were really helpful). The museum itself houses an amazing costume/fabric collection amongst it's other treasures.

The museum is housed in an elegant mansion and car parking is available.

Never heard of this museum before despite living only 30 minutes away. We were very impressed. Lovely interesting museum. Be careful not to drive into the carehome next door! The entrance isn't very obvious.
