Wonderful place to take grandchildren to see the old steam locomotives, the noise the smell, truly unique and I'm not a train enthusiast but this place is so good. A great way to spend 2-3 hours on a nice dry day. Take a camera.

It's a very long time since i was last at the Tanfield Railway (back in the 70's....) but with my interest in Steam Railways rekindled , i decided to take my wife (who also loves Steam Railways) on one of their 'Specials' , 'The Winter Warmer' . Reasonably priced at £19 each (the price includes unlimited travel all day on... More

Tanfield Railway is a must for any visitors in the area interested in Steam Engines, there are rides available on the Steam Railway with inside excellent carriages, we were also able to have snacks, in all this is a great day out for all.

Took my 3 year old for a ride on the train... she loved it!!! All the noises, smoke and carriages made for an exciting trip! We were on the train for a little less than an hour and was too cold to get off for a walk but will be great in the summer.

We visit Tanfield Railway for their Mince Pie Specials every Boxing Day to get out of the house after Christmas for some fresh air, whatever the weather. The volunteer staff are friendly and trains run all day from Andrews House station to Sunniside, back to Andrews House and along the line past Causey Arch to East Tanfield, before the most... More

The trains run primarily on weekends, but it always worth checking in advance. The engine shed shows it as it would have been originally, no modern niceties here. As mentioned previously there are plenty of adjacent walks and picnic areas.

Lovely to see people stopping to wave as you went past our Grandson loved it. The volunteers are excellent and the train driver ticket inspector are... More

I havent been on the train for years but imagine it is a good attraction for families who can afford it. I usually go there for a brisk 2 or 3 mile walk in all seasons. So much industrial history and red kites sometimes seen. There is a good cafe too.
