About
The Shipley Art Gallery is the North East's leading gallery for craft and design, the Shipley opened in 1917 with a collection of 504 paintings bequeathed by local solicitor Joseph Shipley. Since then the collection has grown to include nearly 800 paintings and collections of works on paper, decorative art and contemporary craft. The Shipley’s art collections were designated as being of national importance in 1998 and include local favourite, William Irving's painting The Blaydon Races. In 1977 the Shipley began collecting contemporary art made in Britain. Over the last 25 years the venue has become established as a national centre for contemporary craft and has built up one of the best collections outside London, including ceramics, wood, metal, glass, textiles and furniture. The Shipley is also home to The Henry Rothschild collection of studio ceramics.

This museum has a lot to offer. I was surprised to see so different things in a small museum. Well organised. A must view!

Great local gallery
Feb 2020 • Friends
Lovely small gallery with an interesting permanent collection, with some absolute gems although I accept that is a subjective view. A well laid out display and the collection of ceramics was a pleasing surprise too. It was lovely to see local groups paying close attention to the artworks in an appreciation class. The staff were very informative and friendly.

some interesting items especially furniture!

Small and compact. Felt some of the pictures suffered as a result. Great idea to have children's activities during half term but did make viewing a little more difficult.

Stunning Mannerist Paintings
Jul 2019 • Solo
The latest display of paintings consist of many taken out of storage and exhibited for the first time Who has heard of Pieta Balten and Joachim Wtewael? Both Mannerist painters from the sixteenth century. Their paintings have been cleaned, and probably re-varnished as they are in excellent condition, with vibrant colours. Balten's has St John the Baptist preaching and the crowd is a little like Bruegel's style. Some of the crowd are oblivious and intent on mischief making or picnicing!

Shipley is not as high-profile as the Laing but offers much for art lovers. The ceramic collection is of national importance too. Just a pity there is no tea-room.

Frequent visitor
May 2019 • Solo
This art gallery has been available to visitors fr over eighty years. I first visited as a youngster many years ago. For a suburban gallery it is quite extensive in size. A large main hall has four other galleries , two per side.,leading off. The art gallery has many examples of fine art displayed and rotated on regular basis. The gallery also hosts special displays and visiting exhibitions

Small But Very Interesting
Mar 2019 • Solo
The gallery is just under a mile away from Gateshead metro station.

Although there are very few paintings on display, they are most notable. Tintoretto's Washing of the Disciples' Feet is a large striking painting on the far wall of the gallery. I also enjoyed William Irving's depiction of the Blaydon Races and there is also a nice Teniers the Younger work on view.

Anthony Gormley's maquette of the Angel of the North takes pride of place and there is also a good collection of local glassware and ceramics. I particularly liked the work by Lucie Rie.

There's not enough on display to make a specific visit but I spent an enjoyable half an hour or so browsing whilst in the vicinity.

Admission is free.
