Visited this castle on Wednesday 14th October and paid £12 for two people. This was a bit of a waste of money to walk round the outside of the castle with very little to see.

Far too expensive for the one room you see of the castle and a short tour of grounds which was only given an extra star due to the enthusiasm and knowledge of the tour guide.

Tour only - which was very, very poor. Paid £12.50pp online, but worth no more than a quarter of that. We felt a bit taken advantage of... Walked around exterior of property, and shown one room. No garden, only slightly sad & mowed grounds. No more detail provided on tour than could have been found in brief look on internet. Our overall feeling was that it was a sad property, as though the owner no longer had the time, care or money to do it justice. Such a shame because the property itself has sooo much potential, and the tour could be really interesting if further thought & care were put into it.

If you are thinking of taking the castle tour my advice to you is quite simple, don't . Keep your money in your pocket and spend it on something you will enjoy. To sell this as a tour of a castle is a travesty. We fell for it, travelling 1.75 hours by train to get to Appleby specifically to take the castle tour - what a waste of time and money that turned out to be. The "tour" lasted less than 45 minutes and consisted of an uninspiring 30-minute trudge, on poorly maintained paths, round the outside of the castle walls and 10-15 minutes in one room, The Great Hall, where it abruptly ended. IS THAT IT! - someone in our group exclaimed in astonishment, and yes, that was it as our tour guide confirmed by unceremoniously holding the door open to hasten our exit. The Great Hall by the way isn't that great, smallish, containing 6 or so portraits and some period furniture and assorted artifacts - precious little to warrant the tour fee. Our tour guide on the day seemed unsuited to the task, totally failing to connect with our group. His body language and demeanour suggested he was impatient and would rather be somewhere else - maybe he viewed us a mere hindrance preventing this happening. "Any questions - no - we'll move" was delivered as an instruction rather than a request for feedback on each occasion he stopped to impart his knowledge to us. Not waiting for (or seemingly wanting) questions he would then swiftly turn on his heels and set off taking giant steps as we scurried after him trying desperately to keep up. I was intending to ask for my money back but my wife did not want me to make a fuss. I wish I had done so now, or perhaps, better; I should report them to Trading Standards for mis-selling. In conclusion, if you are in any doubt, this is not a tour of a castle as you would expect it to be. It is however a total rip off and as such should be avoided. But don't be put off visiting Appleby, it is a beautiful town with many other worthy attractions.

We visited while spending the day in Appleby. Having nothing else planned, it seemed like an ideal way to spend a few hours. We paid at the gate, £11 each expecting a full guided tour of the castle, including the keep and some of the rooms in the main building. While waiting for the tour to start we wandered around the grounds. We read some information boards and looked at the external features of the castle. We then met the guide, who was friendly and knowledgeable however the tour itself repeated the information on the boards and very little else. After walking around the outside of half the castle walls we went inside 1 room, the main hall where we were told a little about the families who have lived at the castle. That's where the tour ended. Whist I appreciate that some of the castle is still a private residence, and much of the rest is now hotel and holiday accommodation to call this a full guided tour is not accurate in the slightest. My advice is not to waste your money, there are far better tours on offer at English Heritage or National Trust sites for a fraction of the cost. If you need to wait for the tour to start, be warned there are no toilets for the public to use.
