- Jane R1 contributionTarka cycle hire - great day outOn holiday and saw the advert to hire bikes and cycle the Tarka Trail. Bit windy and a bit wet, but we loved it. Comfy bikes. Friendly, informative owners. Helmets, repair kit and basket inc. Beautiful scenery, lots of places to eat and drink. We did half a day (4hrs) and haven’t cycled much in the last year or too, but managed a good distance past Torrington. We really liked being off the busy roads. A couple of Ibrufen and a glass of🍷 helped the aches 👍 Would definitely recommend this businessVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 April 2024
- debbieingledewMaidenhead, United Kingdom182 contributionsGreat trail and cycle hireExcellent bike ride following south Tarka trail on beautiful sunny day today. Electric bikes reserved several months ago but all ready and waiting for us this morning at reasonable price of £35 for whole day. Loved the trail through woods and by estuary and thankfully not to busy. Great lunch stop at Torrington at puffing billy. Thank you for a really enjoyable day!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2024
- Aimi W1 contributionAbove and beyond customer service!Today, my son was accidentally dropped off at Barnstaple train station. He’s only 12 years old and has additional needs. Without a phone and unable to speak to his taxi driver, he panicked. Fortunately, he found the courage to enter Tarka Trails bike hire, and I’m so glad he did. He managed to speak to Rob, who worked there, and explain his situation. Rob called me and kept my son safe, offering him biscuits and a warm, dry place to stay while we arranged his journey home, which was over an hour away by car. Rob's kindness, courtesy, and outstanding customer service were truly remarkable. People like him are rare nowadays, and businesses like Tarka Trails should be commended for their exceptional efforts in supporting and caring for those in need. Thank you, Rob—you turned what could have been a much worse situation into a safe and positive experience for my son!Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 July 2024
- Emma M14 contributionsTop company, friendly and professionalWe hired two e-bikes to do the Devon coast to coast over 2 days. Tim was extremely helpful from the first moment of contact. He met us with the bikes at our hotel in Ilfracombe, ran through how the bikes worked, how to charge them, all accessories including bike repairs kit, locks. Each bike had two new panieers. Tim transferred our luggage to our hotel in Hatherleigh and then collected it again and they met us in Plymouth at the end of the day to collect the bikes. They were extremely helpful, patient with all my changes (!) and contactable at all times. Definitely 5 starsVisited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 August 2024
- Rebecca W1 contributionGreat bikes from Tarka bikes- thanks for a fantastic day on the Tarka trailWe (2 adults and 2 kids ages 8 and 9) had a great time on the Tarka trail today. We hired fantastic bikes from Tarka bikes and were provided with sturdy locks and repair kit (thankfully not needed!) included in the price. Thanks particularly to Aaron who kitted us out and gave us very helpful advice. We wanted a relaxed day so cycled from Barnstaple to Instow beach and back which is an easy flat cycle even for little legs. We saw lots of incredible scenery and wildlife. Stopping for a cream tea (and play on the pirate playground) at Farmington tea is highly recommended.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2024
- Maura L32 contributionsFantastic!Cannot praise this bike hire business highly enough! We’d never ridden e bikes before and they were so helpful, friendly and accommodating. We went from Barnstaple to Bideford and back and absolutely loved it-I wish we had the Tarka Trail on our doorstep! Thank you so much! We’ll be back.Thank you for your visit and for taking the time to review :) TimWritten 16 October 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2024

Rented a couple of bikes for a full day cycling the Tarka Trail. We picked them up first thing (around 09:30) which is clearly a busy time for the shop.
The shop is conveniently located next to Barnstaple train station, which has a spacious car park with really cheap parking for the day.
Having booked in advance, the bikes were ready and waiting for us. We were able to briefly check the size, given a very quick talk and handed a map. It all felt quite rushed, and so I had to head back to get the tyres on my bike inflated. I also had to adjust the seat further along the trail myself.
Once we were out on the trail we had a great time, it's a brilliant day out. One of the bikes was clearly relatively new, and was comfortable. The other was a bit rickety, with a seat that felt like it was made from sharp rocks. Some of the extras were a bit worn too, such as the helmets, and a flimsy lock. We were supplied with some tools, including a multitool (which was useful for the aforementioned seat adjustments), which was a nice touch.
I want to give this place a higher rating, as one of the bikes was great, and the trail is a brilliant day out, but given how uncomfortable the other bike was, the flimsy equipment, and the lack of attention when we arrived, I have to knock a couple of points off.
An updated fleet of larger bikes, or at least some better seats, would go a long way to upping my rating.

We hired bikes from the station shop and the guys were very helpful and friendly.
I pre booked in case it was busy and we were the first to collect our bikes on the Sunday around 9:30 and parking at the station is a bargain for just £2.30 all day! Great experience and such a beautiful trail to follow, flat and so scenic, I especially loved the old station refreshment stops en route. A must cycle ride to do, carefree, no traffic and such a brilliant way to see the beautiful sights of Devon and you get to do some exercise too! We did the south route and covered 41.5 miles with photo stops, a lunch stop at Puffing Billy and a welcome pub stop at Instow beach on our return route! Highly recommend doing this!

What an excellent day out. We reserved the bikes the day before (without having to pay a deposit) and asked what time we were likely to collect.
Upon arrival the next day, our bikes were already allocated and ready to go. A quick test ride was offered and adjustment to saddle height made by the staff.
Tool kit (in a rucksack) and helmet were included in the hiring fee. Also included was a pump and lock
Payment made, we were pointed in the right direction.
Riding is simple, flat and safe. Total elevation gain over the 9 miles to Bideford just 7 metres! Hardly any interaction with cars.
We stopped off at Instow for breakfast.
Very impressed with the condition of bike. It was clearly well maintained and serviced regularly. Good range of options from electric bike through to mountain bikes.
Overall an excellent day - would definitely do again.

Five Brothers plus one, meeting up finally to have a great weekend together and we went to Barnstaple.
Bike riding was a recommended activity so we booked in advance with Tara Trial Cycle Hire, well three of us did and the others on the day.
Everything was so easy and I had not been in a bike in many many a year which is maybe why I selected the e-bike which gave three levels of support, well four if you include none.
The two gentlemen checked us in and showed how the bikes worked, gave us also the cycle helmets and off we went.
Our chosen route was south from Barnstaple to Bideford and we did this over four hours stopping twice for coffee and lunch. The route was a previous railway line, flat and comfortable to cycle along the shores of the Taw and the Torridge estuaries. The scenery was stunning and we will be back for sure to do a longer route. This one was just under 20 miles.
For someone who had not been on a bike in over 30 years, it was a wonderful reintroduction.
I can not recommend this highly enough.

We loved our cycle from Barnstaple to Crow Point. It’s the first time we’ve hired bikes on holiday as a family and will definitely do so again. The trail is flat and the scenery is diverse and so picturesque. We (2 adults and a 10 and 8 yr old) cycled to crow point and back in half a day with a break for lunch and a stop of at the waterside cafe on the way back. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Returned from Aus for a couple of weeks to see 'rellies' and friends and to soak up the beautiful North Devon countryside in Spring. Hiring bikes and riding the Tarka trail was a wonderful way to spend the day. Tim and the team were so helpful, good to natter with and they sorted us out with bikes that were perfect for the trail. Highly recommend Tarka Trail Cycle Hire - well worth a 22hr flght for ;-)

My son and I were cycling the Tarka Trail from Braughton to Barnstaple when his tyre became flat. We got to the bike shop 5 minutes before closing and despite us not having hire bikes the youngsters in the shop were happy to help. They changed his inner tube (onlycost £10) and stayed beyond their closing time to assist. Blown away by their service, everyone coming back with their bikes whist we we there seemed so pleased with their experience of the shop too. Thanks TTCH - you literally made our evening!

This great business has (we were informed being going for 35÷ and we last used them at least 20 years ago when our children were youngsters).
In these trying times it is gratifying to highlight the excellent and informative services provided by the "Otters".
Bikes supplied were in excellent order, suitable for us as people and reasonably priced.
The "Otter Depot" is in an excellent location for parking and near to a cycle track that is well maintained and can take you to lots of lovely places.
What's not to like?
Long may this super duper enterprise live on.

Wonderful experience hiring Bikes at Tarka Trail Cycle Hire. The guys were so helpful, trail is beautiful - winding through forests and then onto the coast. We cycled 8 miles to Instow, had some cake from Johns at Instow (highly recommend) and then cycled back.
Perfect morning.
