About
Old Toms Durham is influenced from the first ever Gin Old Tom which plays a significant role in the history of gin. Quaffed by the bucketload during the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as something of a bridge between Dutch Genever and London Dry, drier than the former and sweeter than the latter....

The most EXPENSIVE drinks
£27 for 2 gin and tonics is an absolute disgrace
I questioned this with one of the servers and he was very rude! He just shrugged 🤷🏿‍♂️

Fab service and the drinks were both fab :)

If you are going to rip tourists off to the tune of nearly £16 for two gins and tonic perhaps you should a) advertise the prices outside or b) wear a mask and be called Dick Turpin’s...

The clue once we were inside the establishment was when we worked out that the ‘busy pub’ atmosphere was a) staff b) off duty staff c) friends (presumably not paying over the odds for bog standard gin and bog standard tonic.

Sadly put our visit to Durham on a downer almost from the off thankfully we were only there for one nigh..

Lovely sunny day, so we stopped in at Old Tom's for a quick drink and a light bite to eat. Grabbed a table and waited.
There was only one member of staff serving outside, who gave us the menu.
After sitting for some time, I wandered inside to try and order something, to be told it was take service only. I returned to our table and waited.
The sole waiter returned and went to a table that has just arrived and started taking their order.
We waited some more and he finally finally arrived, I placed our order.
Coffee, sparkling water, bread & oil and hummus & olives with flat bread.
I was told they were out of olives, so I asked if I could just have the hummus and flat bread, which was fine.

The lone worker then asked the couple who has just arrived and sat at the table beside us, if they had ordered?!?
You're the only person here! How can you not know if you've taken their order?

The coffee arrived asking with the water, then we waited for the food. The bread and oil arrived first. Now I don't know about you, but when I order this dish, I normally expect to see some rustic bread, maybe sliced baguette, but no. What we received was a some cheap white sliced bread, toasted and cut into random shapes. Unsure why he was bringing items one at a time, we were just talking about the state of the food delivered, when the hummus and flatbread arrived. More white toast, again cut into small triangles and squares.

I mentioned that this was not what we ordered, the reply was ' I don't prepare the food'
Maybe you don't, but you're the customer facing member of staff, so listen to the complaint before making excuses.

If we wanted toast, we would order toast.
At this point my partner took a sip of her 'sparkling' water. It wasn't, there wasn't a bubble in site and it was flat.
I pointed this out to the waiter, who insisted that it was sparkling water he had opened and poured. Yes maybe it was, but it wasn't carbonated.

After being offered no apology for the poor food, I explained that if you don't have things on the menu, don't try and fob the customer off, but explain like he did with the olives.

I explained I want paying so just take it back inside.
He asked if I wanted to speak to the owner, to which I replied yes I do.

I followed him inside, where another member of staff was working. I mentioned the food problem, whereby she showed me a loaf of sliced brown bread and asked if I wanted that instead?

I didn't see any manager or owner, so I paid for my coffee and left.

The coffee was decent, for the record.... But it's difficult to spoil a black Americano!

Not sure if we just got them on a bad day, but if you can't serve the basic bar food on your menu, say you haven't got it, don't try and pass off your 50p loaf of bread and charge a fiver for the privilege.

Might sound a bit harsh, but the people around us agreed when they saw what was delivered to our table .

Save your money and go somewhere else.

Worth the trip to Durham alone!
There are some great places there, and Old Tom's is ideal to drop into and enjoy a gin or beer, and check out the amazing roof displays!
To be honest, it's very hard to describe this place, just go check it out, trust me! Excellent drinks and great staff!

Booked a table....asked for drink number one (one of the two beers on draft) "sorry that beer dispenser isnt working so Lagunitas is off". Ordered a gin - two minutes later "sorry we dont have that one". Ordered a Merlot - "very sorry we dont have the Merlot in stock"....Basically we all know that reduced drinks menus abound everywhere, but when three orders in succession are met with negatives then it's pretty poor. The bar is a great place so gets two stars just for existing.

Booked a gin tasting experience to start a 50th birthday celebration day- no “ginologist” really slow service, no experience, asked what was happening and no response-really sweet waiter but no clue- manager hid inside - when we asked for bill I asked what had happened and she said they were too busy- that’s fine but they could have told us that 2 hrs before- we would have stayed for a drink as lovely setting and moved on. Very disappointed!

Nice little riverside bar, but with uncomfortable hard seating, Nice out look over the river though.
A tad expensive on drinks, all of which were ordered via having to download their app ( face to face service is offered if necessary).
Downloading their app was a real faff and service of drinks following our order via this was slow.
Table service by staff was pleasant, but tables were not cleaned after every use, so I doubt their laminated menus would have been too?
This said, the bar is worth a visit for the views in the Sun, people watching! (just remember to take your own sanitizer).
