To ensure the safety and well-being of staff and visitors, Durham University’s museums, galleries and Botanic Garden will remain closed until early 2021. We will be using the closed period to carry out improvements at all our sites. At Durham Castle this will include: • Preparing to launch ‘Heralding Women’, a project celebrating the women of University College and Durham Castle which will run through 2021 • Updating and improving the Tunstall Gallery art displays • Develop new online exhibitions and learning resources for users to engage with from anywhere in the world • Catalogue and digitise more of our collections and share them online via our online database Discover

Stunning building
Oct 2020
Unfortunately due to covid restrictions the castle was closed to the public for our visit. But it is still a stunning building and hopefully we will be back to explore it properly.

Durham Castle is a Norman castle located in Durham, England, used since 1840 by University College. The castle sits on top of a hill above the River Wear on the Durham Peninsula, on the opposite bank of Durham Cathedral.

Closed but no notices up around the city to advise you of this! Could have had pictures/info/noticeboards outside the church so at least we could have seen what we were missing

Shut - even the grounds are closed to the public
Aug 2020
Agree with previous reviewer. I do not consider myself 'lucky' to be able to go through the doors at all as the university puts it! Such arrogance. The university and castle were and are mainly paid for by taxes. It is a world heritage site. Personally I feel that there should be an obligation on the university to facilitate viewings, and fail to see why that should be a problem especially during the holidays when few students are present.
I understand that covid restrictions would affect access to people's living quarters but this does not explain why the entire grounds are shut. This seems completely unreasonable.
Clearly the university staff really do want to stay safe in their towers whilst the people of Durham try to make a living despite the university denying access to one of the main reasons to visit Durham!

Access to Durham Castle is by tour guide only and as the majority of our tour guides are students we would not encourage them to return to Durham at this time. We will look to restart tours of Durham Castle when it is safe to do so and we hope you can join us at this time.

Still closed
Aug 2020
This castle has stood for 1000 years, through wars, famines and real killer plagues.

However the current owners still havent opened it which is truly sad. They should hang their heads in collective shame.

Great student digs
Mar 2020 • Solo
A splendid medieval castle towering over the city of Durham.

If like me you just went there on your own accord and just wanted to look round then prepare to be disappointed. You have to book a guided tour at select times not when you want. Tour cost £5.

Nonetheless I took a tour which lasted just under an hour and found it quite informative. You were shown a small selection of the castle but not all. Mainly because the castle serves as student accommodation for the alumni of Durham University (how cool is that).

Other features included the black staircase and great hall (which was a student dining area) and yes before you ask (sigh) it did look like something out of Harry Potter.

It wasn't the best of experiences but it wasn't the worst. For a fiver the guide was peppy and enthusiastic and yes I would say that you got your money's worth.

Disappointed, only do guided tours.
Wanted to go just take in the history in my own time. BUT only GUIDED TOURS ALLOWED, such a shame. Losing so much business not allowing people to go In and reflect In their own .

Thank you for your review. The reason the Castle is accessed only by guided tours is because it is effectively a college of Durham University, and I am sure you appreciate the fact we wouldn't be able to let visitors wander around the building of their own accord considering the students live here and use the spaces during the day. In fact, being a private hall of residence, it is lucky enough the Castle opens its doors to visitors at all with guided tours. It is a shame you didn't go for a tour and missed the chance to take in wonderful history brought alive by our student guides as I'm sure we wouldn't have received such a harsh review. Best wishes.

When visiting the cathedral it is a must to visit the castle at the same time if possible. These two buildings really Do go hand in hand. The views are spectacular
