Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Website says open 11am til 4pm on a Sunday. However that is not true. We have just trailed up the hill to find its closed for the winter & reopens March 2024. Needs website & other sites updating to reflect this. Its a shame though as its been Christmas Market weekend & Durham has been very busy.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience. We are in the middle of a rebranding, including creating a more accessible website and having a more active social media presence. We are working as quickly as we can to get this all implemented, and we ask that you please excuse any inconsistencies during this time. I have now updated our timings on TripAdvisor accordingly. We do try to keep our current website up to date which has always stated that we are open every week Wednesday to Sunday, from April until October, plus Bank Holidays, 11am to 4.30pm. Nonetheless I am sorry that you were disappointed, and hope that you were able to enjoy the other wonderful heritage experiences that Durham has to offer. If you would like to discuss anything further please feel free to contact me via email - museumofficer@durhammuseum.co.uk.

A wonderful museum situated on the Bailey in a Church with amazing stained glass windows.
The museum gives great insight into Durham, it's origins and buildings which were part of it's past. Plenty of interesting interactive opportunities for children.

Very, helpful friendly staff.

Thank goodness we took the opportunity to visit this today.

Excellent small museum near to cathedral and castle. We visited on family day so only paid £2.50 for an adult as childten free. Lots of information boards and the kids love the trails and activities. We spent an hour completing everything and my son was proud of his free bookmark. We lived the victorian prison cell and school details.

Very interesting museum to visit with lots of interesting facts about Durham, how it became the place it is now. Only a small museum, but nevertheless good to visit. The staff were friendly and helpful. Entrance to this museum is free, however if you would like to make a donation to help with the upkeep of the museum there is a donation glass jar on the way out of the museum if you would like to contribute something.

Friendly welcome, this was a very informative visit where its best to view the video first and then explore the museum.
An authentic look at the history and genuine artefacts connected to Durham to view.
A small fee but well worth it.

Covers from St.Cuthberts time through to modern days including their mining history. Lots of photos and interesting exhibits including a prison cell and stocks!
Situated in an old church which has beautiful stained windows and original woodwork which is a piece of history itself.

This small museum covers all periods of local history. It has a bit of a tired look about it, like the short video on a TV screen that must be over ten years old, but the information was interesting. The museum is located in a former church and there are some remnants of the church interior still present.

See my report for the visitor centre. This is a not- to-be-missed museum on a visit to the City. It does not open until 11.00am

A small museum based in a church and a lovely place to discover the history of Durham. It includes many artefacts and an interesting film. Well worth a visit. As seniors we only paid £2 each entrance fee.

We didn't and reckoned seeing it (start with the film upstairs) would have helped us appreciate what is a lovely and historic city. The museum is in a church so very small but plenty of interest.. Very friendly staff.
