Many reviews for this picturesque riverside walk describe how lovely it is in the summer – well, today it rained almost Biblically, with booming thunder and forked lightning for good measure! We set off knowing the weather forecast, and were dressed accordingly in waterproofs, but even so we got soaked, so heavy was the storm.

However, it says a lot about this walk that it wasn’t spoiled – the surroundings are still quite beautiful even when its chucking down. In fact, there was something about the Cathedral looming high above under a black sky, with raindrops lashing the surface of the river, that was very dramatic and pleasing. Between the storms was some bright spells that dried things up quickly, and made everything extra green. The architecture here is always outstanding, especially the big arch of Prebends Bridge and the odd stone chair beneath it with its gargoyle faces contrasting the silver swan sculpure further along the river.

The closeness to Durham centre makes it great for shopping and grabbing lunch too, and we used the excellent Park and Ride sercive to get there as it costs very little compared to the hassle and expense of city centre parking and the mad roundabout near the main car parks.

The historic centre of Durham is built on a deep bend, essentially an oxbow, of the River Wear and there are foot and bicycle paths along both sides of the river all the way through the city from out in the countryside either direction. There are woods along these and they connect to other paths at various locations. We used these at times when walking to our daughter's college at the university or just going through the city. We also ate lunch in the village of Shincliffe one day and then walked back to connect to the trails, walking all the way back into the city centre. It was very nice and pleasant, and this is a wonderful asset that really adds to the peaceful character, charm, and scenery of Durham.

I downloaded a Durham city walk from a website and printed it off and it mostly followed the riverside which was so peaceful. It was easy to walk on the well maintained paths.
There are some great views of the Cathedral from the riverside and the path takes you to some interesting places where past residents lived.
An excellent way to spend a sunny day.

Durham riverside walks are beautiful. The city is beautiful and some of the better views are to be had from the riverside. It needs investment though to tidy it up and measures introduced to help make the lone wanderer safe. I didn't feel unsafe but can imagine some would. The boat clubs also need to smarten up their boathouses with signage and a lick of paint.

The actual city centre with the historic areas is quite small. Magnificent cathedral and wonderful castle can easily be done in a morning or afternoon. If you include the Riverside walks and a coffee stop add a couple of hours perhaps.

Popped back up home from London for ma’s birthday. Would have gone to her folks castle but there were travel restrictions and we thought the extra 40 odd miles was probably pushing it a little. Anyway, we both felt a bit under the weather so went on the riverside walk and, I must say, it did us both the world of good. I felt rejuvenated being back home and it was lovely talking to fellow walkers and admiring the bluebells with them. I find Northerners are so much friendlier than the Londoners. I can’t tell you how many times I get chased in London and people are so rude! Great to be back home, looking forward to a trip to Barnard Castle for the wife’s birthday then back down to the smoke to get stuff done.

This is a lovely walk along the riverside with lots of greenery to admire and some quite interesting old buildings.
There had been quite a bit of rain so the path was quite muddy in places so proper shoes would be necessary.
A very popular place for young and old alike.

Because Durham Castle was closed my partner and I decided to take the riverside walk which was lovely. We walked a fair length along the designated pathway and over the bridge which brings you out alongside the passport office. There is a lovely sculpture of a heron overlooking the weir. Most of the cafes, bars and eating establishments were open. Would visit again sometime in the not too distant future when hopefully the castle will be open.

One couldn’t find a more picturesque setting for a walk. Looking up at the Cathedral and Castle is truly inspiring. The wooded banks are full of wild flowers whatever the season and it’s a delightful place to walk at any time of the yea

Great walk by the river. Really felt like you were out in the countryside rather than in the middle of a city.
Does need some work on it though as there was lots of knotweed and Japanese balsam growing and becoming very invasive in parts. If some of the trees and bushes were cut back there could be lots of sitt8ng areas along the riverside
