Overview

More
Welcome to the Museum of Wigan Life. The museum is Wigan's hidden gem with collections covering the whole history of the Borough and beyond. Our Ancient Egyptian exhibition has recently been featured on BBC 2's Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher. The permanent gallery explores local history with everything from the Roman settlement to Northern Soul at Wigan Casino. New displays highlight the area's famous industrial past 'Coal, Cotton and Canals' and earlier trades such as clock making and pewter ware. Find out how the Pit Brow Lasses shocked Victorian society, what's a lobby-gobbler and why are Wiganers known as pie-eaters? For children there's our Arts Award trail, mock Egyptian tomb, dressing up and activity table. The museum is housed in a beautiful Grade II listed building designed as a library in 1878 by Alfred Waterhouse, architect of London's Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall. You can walk in the footsteps of George Orwell who researched 'The Road to Wigan Pier' here in the 1930s or pop upstairs to Local Studies and discover your own family history with our friendly team.

I remember when this wad Wigan library. I like the concept of a museum on local life but feel this museum could be improved upon to create a better attraction for the town.

I visited the reference library on the upper floor last week, to do some research into my Family Tree. My research was totally spoilt by the behaviour of some 'regular' researchers, who seemed to think that they owned the place, and conversed and laughed loudly...More

We found the staff to be very condescending and rude, in fact Wigan overall was a big disappointment. The museum, unless you are interested in the reading room upstairs (which is a lovely room to have a look at) , had little to offer. Okay...More

Lovely little museum (free) and punching above its weight with a well displayed small but interesting Egyptian Collection. Nice little shop.

On a Mayoral tour of Wigan by most of the Greater Manchester Mayors, we were taken to the Museum of Wigan Life and given a guided tour by the curator. As an "outsider" from Stockport, I had no idea of the richness of Wigan's history...More

Not the biggest of places but I thought this was well worth a visit. Good history of the local area with some nice things to see. Great for kids with things to do and colour.

I went with my Aunt (a Wigan native) and enjoyed it immensely. Seeing the displays of past life in Wigan was fantastic. My Aunt also would say how she remembered this and that. I do miss The Way We Were Museum at Wigan Pier; but,...More

The cost per visitor of this free to enter establishment must be sky high due to its poor attendance. It appears to be more of an establishment that exists to satisfy egos of those who work there. It should be removed from the expensive to...More

Thanks for your feedback. We have around 24,000 visitors per year and are one of the lowest cost per head museums in Greater Manchester. The museum attracts people from across the Borough, regionally and even internationally for our family history resources and exhibitions.
