I've ended up walking the John Muir Way in bits, and dropped in here towards the end of the second stage of three (before following the Link route down to Cockburnspath and Berwick). I'm one of those people who knows about Muir and have an expectation that people from both the US and Scotland will at least know who he... More

We are pleased you enjoyed your visit to John Muir's Birthplace and that you found our staff knowledgeable. If you would like to see Muir-related artefacts, we would recommend a trip to his home in Martinez, California, which has a reconstruction of his 'Scribble Den', where much of his writing took place, his family having taken all their possessions when... A visit to Dunbar and John Muir's Birthplace is most certainly worth it, especially if you (like me) are a die-hard fan of John Muir. A wonderful array of information over three stories in this cozy little museum gives you a full scope of John Muir's life from boyhood through his legacy after his death. Staff was very kind and... Visited John muir's birthplace today. We were greeted by a American lady who was very friendly and knowledgable. We asked her a few questions and receive very detailed responses. We then started walking round the exhibit. There was so much information. The reason I'm only giving it 4 stars was because it's not a place that really interests me. I... More

Dear Cal Thank you for taking the time to visit John Muir's Birthplace and the leave your lovely review. It is true to say that knowledge about John Muir is still developing in Scotland, although the work of the John Muir Trust, John Muir Birthplace Charitable Trust, Scottish Natural Heritage and several others is helping. We are also visited annually... More

Staff were amazing and had so much knowledge. Learnt so much about an incredible man and the impact he had on the USA. Is a wonderful insight into a Dunbar's history and the journey of one of its own

A modern interior has been created within the shell of this old building which was the birthplace of John Muir. We had some idea of who he was from visits to Muir Woods with its magnificent Redwood Trees just north of San Francisco. The museum is set out over three floors and does not contain many artifacts. Instead it is... More

Dear Ken We are pleased you enjoyed your visit, and were fascinated by Muir's life story. We concentrate on telling the story as the family took everything to the states with them, and a lot of the family artefacts can be seen in Martinez, in California. More

Not what you would expect, the museum in Muir's birthplace has an interesting architectural twist! Try it, it's free. A good deal of reading but fascinating lives laid out for you to think about. Nice chat with very helpful museum staff. Maybe not for very young kids although there is a wee play area.

Thank you for your review, we are pleased you found the museum interesting, we do indeed have an amazing story to tell. Our under 5s play area is currently being developed from ideas gained though a special under 5s exhibition we held last year, we don't think anyone is too young to start learning about John Muir's message! Great museum charting the life and work of John Muir from his birth in Dunbar to his journeys around the world and his life in the United States. For such a small museum it is packed with interesting facts and information about how one person made such a great impact on protecting the world we live in today. I didn't... More

Visited with family recently - this is a great place to learn a little more about a hugely influential naturalist / conservationist. I was very interested to learn about someone who I was pretty ignorant of previously. Well laid out displays - some interactive stuff to keep children entertained. Nicely compact in a way too though - It's very good... More

Free museum, staff helpful not only about John Muir but also about his walk along coast which is best thing to do in Dunbar, apart from this museum.
