Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

A good walk with a great view.

It was a wet windy day, so we did not spend a lot of time. The view is great and it is worth visiting, especially since it was free when we went.

We visited Peel Castle in the off season. While we couldn't go in because it was closed it was worth the visit and I recommend it if you find yourself on the Isle of Man. You can walk around the fortress and collect seashells on the adjacent beach. I also recommend hiking up the hill next to the castle for... More

There is nothing wrong with Peel Castle but I've seen so many ruined castles now that frankly I'm a bit bored with them. However it's more impressive than the cathedral!

Wonderful visit we did, it takes time but at the end in turns to be very interesting and you learn a lot about this place of the island. Traditions, history, the electronic guide is very helpful. People are welcoming and that's something which makes you want to come back next year

Walked around the outside of this castle. From the beach to the cafe by the harbour. Great views. Lots to look at. Great for young children to see a bit of real history. Might not be pleasant on a windy and rainy day though! Recommend a visit on a dry day.

We turned up a bit by accident - having visited Peel we walked to the castle entrance expecting it to be free but then got in conversation with the lovely chap at the kiosk. His demeanour suggested that he hadn't talked to many people that day so we felt obliged to hand over the £5 each, take the audio guide... More

Lovely walk around the outside can be enjoyed without having to pay entrance fee but we'll worth paying to look inside. Great audio tour is available. A multi entrance ticket can be bought to combine with the house of Mannanan which is great. Outside theatre often staged in the summer -makes a fabulous venue but wrap up warm

This place has everything you would want in a castle plus spectacular sea vuews and its own cathedral. Audio guide very good. Added bonus was free entry to National Trust members.
