Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

The castle ruins date back to about the 9th century and are situated on a hill carpeted with bright green grass overlooking the Irish Sea and the story-book village called Peel on the Isle of Man. The best part was, just like Castle Rushen, we got to roam wherever we liked for as long as we liked. There were very... More

This was amazing to walk around, even though we were there in the winter and it was not open to the public - it was still well worth exploring. The views beside the ocean were really gorgeous, and we were there when the sun was setting. Would love to go back in the summer to see inside - gives you... More

Make sure you pack your National Trust card when visiting the IOM as it will be well used. Peel Castle is fantastic - lots to see and do in a stunning location.

It took a surprisingly long time for us to get round the castle, lot of different bits to explore and the audio guide was useful and informative. Great views out to sea and over Peel too. Longer opening hours would be good and last admission are around 1700 and in the summer months it would be great to be able... More

Such a beautiful castle alongside a beautiful harbour and beach. Lots of little areas to explore. Great views. Some nice areas to sit and catch the sun. Good area for birdwatching. Red Billed Chough and Black Guillemot are specialty here.

It was a wet windy day, so we did not spend a lot of time. The view is great and it is worth visiting, especially since it was free when we went.

We visited Peel Castle in the off season. While we couldn't go in because it was closed it was worth the visit and I recommend it if you find yourself on the Isle of Man. You can walk around the fortress and collect seashells on the adjacent beach. I also recommend hiking up the hill next to the castle for... More

There is nothing wrong with Peel Castle but I've seen so many ruined castles now that frankly I'm a bit bored with them. However it's more impressive than the cathedral!

Wonderful visit we did, it takes time but at the end in turns to be very interesting and you learn a lot about this place of the island. Traditions, history, the electronic guide is very helpful. People are welcoming and that's something which makes you want to come back next year
