About
Castle Rushen is one of the world’s most finely preserved medieval castles and can be found in the Isle of Man's former capital, Castletown. Once a royal palace, Castle Rushen was home to the Kings and Lords of Mann, with the Castle’s oldest part dating back to the time of Magnus, last Norse King of Mann. Later on, Castle Rushen served as an administrative centre, a mint, a law court and for over 100 years until the late 19th Century, as a prison. Today, spectacular displays illustrate the Castle at various times in history, with figures in period costume, historical furnishings and wall hangings, realistic food, contemporary music and medieval speech brining the Castle’s medieval and 17th Century periods to life. Only a short drive away, the ancient ruins of Rushen Abbey can also be enjoyed.

- Mrs DWilsden, United Kingdom420 contributionsGreat visit!A great castle, filled with history. Loads of interesting information about its use over the years. Especially liked the rooms dressed as Medieval use. Great views from the top. Free entry for National Trust members.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024
- mystic100259 contributionsDo not leave IOM without visiting! This has got to be one of the best castles I have been to, and now one of my favourites. Not only is the castle almost complete, it is also displayed in a very informative, caring ant atmospheric manner, giving visitors a real feel for how the castle operated and may have been like to live in. A definite for any visitors to Castletown and/or IOM. About 5 minute walk from the steam railway station.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- Janet HWorcester, United Kingdom601 contributionsSteeped in so much historySuch a beautiful setting and is steeped in so much history. The walls are so thick that one cannot imagine how the labourers carted the stone there all those years ago. Well laid out exhibits too. Lovely views over Castletown.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 April 2024
- chloebridlexxxDouglas, United Kingdom102 contributionsGreatGreat views from the top of the castle! I am terrified of heights but managed to get to the top. You enter the Castle and take a spiral staircase up to the top, stopping at each level to explore. I think this is why I was able to get to the top-- I was not doing the great hike from the bottom to the top all in one go. Staff were lovely and friendly. The area surrounding the castle has great opportunities for food and drink. My only 'bad' comment would be I would have liked more information as I was travelling around the first few rooms. Otherwise, a great experience.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 May 2024
- wethiker203 contributionsThe life of royalty well preserved. We visited the entire castle complex one day and returned again to check out the tapestry recreations and shop. Definitely get the two week pass for attractions if you are going to three or more during your Isle of Man stay. The staff at the castle were very helpful and friendly. Not crowded at all in May. Great displays of life at the time and a Smithsonian level display and upkeep. From the heights you can see all of Castletown.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 May 2024
- Ann B20 contributionsHistory comes aliveThis place makes history come alive. Great views of Castletown from the upper levels, but a lot of climbing narrow stairs. Also a great place to run off little-kid energy.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024
- Ibrahim GHuddersfield, United Kingdom201 contributionsIn the end there's quite a bit to seeVisit this site on day 3 on our trip to IOM. We took the train down to Castletown and it's a good 10-minute walk to the castle. If you didn't want to walk as far then get the bus which passes through the centre. As you would expect the castle dominated the town. There is a one-way system in place to help you to navigate the castle and curators' around to guide. At first you start off with just rooms to visit with boards to read, giving you the history over the ages, then progress to the statelier affairs and other working rooms. The views from the top of the castle are really good especially on a clear day. If this had an audio companion like Peel it could really be top notch.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 July 2024
- Wayfaring LibertarianBelfast, United Kingdom988 contributions“Free” entry with a 5-day “Go Explore” cardI thought this was a very impressive castle. I can’t speak to the value of purchasing a ticket, because I did not have to pay an entry fee. I purchased an IOM “Go Explore” card and it was worth the investment. Not only did I get to see the Laxey Wheel without an entry fee and have unlimited access to the railways, but entry to Castle Rushen was included with the card as well. It’s true that there were a lot of narrow steps, so that’s something to keep in mind. Overall, it was a fun experience and a great excuse to visit Castletown.Thank you for your feedback. The Go Explore Heritage Card offers great value for money and we're so pleased to hear it was worth the investment. We also have Holiday Pass Tickets available and a TT Pass available during TT, Southern 100 and Manx Grand Prix. - Terry B8 contributionsVisit to Castle Rushen at Castletown, Isle of ManThis was a visit to a historic castle which required a lot of ascending and descending of stairs. However at each level there were rooms to visit which contained items to view and explanations of their history. - MerrowmumGuildford, United Kingdom1,373 contributionsSuperb little castle in excellent state of preservationWe thoroughly enjoyed our hour exploring this little castle, which is really incredibly well preserved. Everyone follows a route round as the stairways are both narrow and winding on the whole! Some rooms are basically empty or very simply furnished, but others have recreated interiors which were very well done. You can climb up to the top where there are lovely views. We didn’t have time to explore the walls but you can do a wall walk; we did go into the dungeon which has quite an impressive roof. It isn’t wheelchair accessible but one of the others in our group, who knew she wouldn’t manage the original stairs, was allowed to use a modern staircase at the back to access some parts, so there is some accessibility if you are ok with standard staircases but not awkward ones. There is a short video (4 mins) giving historical highlights as well as a couple of exhibition rooms; there are also various display boards throughout.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 August 2024

We visited Castle Rushen in June . It's a wonderful, well- preserved medieval castle with a drawbridge and two portcullises and MURDER HOLES!!!! It was once the home of the kings and lords of Mann. What more could you and your kids want for an exciting day out? There are many floors to be explored and the possibility to get lost in what feels like a rabbit warren of tunnels and nooks and crannies. It's educational and fun and is highly recommended.
On the top floor I encountered Jill who was a mine of information. After explaining to her that our next two visits were to the Old Grammar School and the Nautical Museum she revealed to me that they were closed owing to staff shortages. Apparently, there are tours every Saturday of the castle and these two historical buildings but we had been unaware of that. On witnessing my dismay she made a phone call and arranged to take us across to the Old Grammar School (see my review on the Old Grammar School) and give us a tour and Andrew opened up the Nautical Museum and also gave us a tour to remember (see my review on the Nautical Museum). Many thanks to Jill and Andrew for going way beyond the call of duty and making our visit memorable.

Where most castles are ruins this one is still roofed and watertight. The wall walk gives good views of the surrounding town.
You are directed up the inside of the castle one way and go into various rooms on the way up - plenty of info boards describing what the room was used for - and down a different route. The views from the top are stunning and we saw Ireland and a lot of the countryside.
Some of the rooms are furnished as to what they would have been centuries ago.
Be careful if you have small children or walking difficulties as the round staircase is very tight and steep.

Isle of Man has two castles worth a short visit. The one at Peel is in ruins, but it’s big, majestic, and makes beautiful pictures from the seashore.
This one, Castle Rushen, in Castletown is complete, but cramped in the middle of the city and almost empty, so a lot of dummies have been added.
It looks very different from every angle, so the exterior deserves more pictures than the interior.

Situated in Castletown apparently originally built in the 11th century this is rated as one of the most complete castles in the British Isles, but it’s more than just a castle it’s a museum exploring so much of the history of the island. Impressive to say the least with manikins at various points that can surprise you at certain turns. This castle has been a fortress, a prison and at some time an asylum. The staff were excellent situated at certain points around the castle they were really helpful. Owned by Manx Heritage but you can use your National Trust card for admission.

This impressive castle in the heart of the former Capital of the Island offers much in the way of history of the power vested in the Kings and Lords of Mann over the centuries. However, we visited with 2 grandchildren and whilst they enjoyed climbing the spooky dark staircases and battlements, I felt that the castle seemed to have less interactive material now than when I visited with my son over 20 years ago. Yes, the figure straining on the toilet is still there (and was much appreciated by the children), but didn’t there used to be figures in the guardroom and some of the cells??
I’m not suggesting we turn history into a Disney style experience, but more interactive features to fire the imagination of our youngsters can surely only be a good thing?

what is the cost of touring Castle Rushen in U.S. dollars
Written 27 June 2017
Hi Jack, Castle Rushen costs £10 to visit. The cost in USD would depend on the exchange rate at the time. Today this would be approx. USD12.77. For best value, we'd recommend purchasing a £20 Holiday Pass which provides entry to all Manx National Heritage sites such as Castle Rushen, Cregneash, Laxey Wheel, House of Manannan etc or Go Explore Heritage Card (£57), which includes Isle of Man Steam Railway, Manx Electric Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway and Bus Vannin. You can find out more or purchase in advance on the Manx National Heritage shop website.
