Thank you very much for your generous review. Our building is what it is, a four roomed Georgian cottage. There are so many stories to tell of Weardale that we have to try to find ingeneous ways of using the space availabe. Thanks to an exhibition at Bowes Museum this year where I saw an interactive ipad being used we... More

After learning that my ancestors lived in this area for over 100 years, Ken Heatherington produced a huge report covering 6 generations, births/baptisms, marriages, deaths/burials. What a terrific addition to my family tree! A visit to the museum provides a lot of helpful insights into life in the area in the 1700/1800's.

A fantastic local museum run totally by dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers. It is small on the outside but absolutely packed full of wonderful objects. Fabulous for both local and family history. I'd highly recommend a visit!

We gave the Bowes Museum a miss, in favour of this one.....and I'm really glad we did. I guess it's "horses for courses", but this was the right choice for us. There were two volunteer curators who seemed to take a real pride in welcoming us and taking us through some additional detail on the social history exhibits. Yep! There... More

Everything in this museum is contained in an upstairs floor. It houses' mainly old embroidary and has some artifacts. There is not a lot to see and you can see everything in 30 minutes. Designed mainly for adults.

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry that our Museum didn't live up to your expectations and we will take your observations on board . Our cottage museum is small but there are both ground floor and upstairs rooms, and an historic chapel next door. We have an embroidered tapestry which was made in 2003-6 and a Durham Quilt, but... Created, curated and cared for by the people of Weardale for 30 years during which time it has grown from a collection of personal artifacts to an impressive range of themed pieces and archives documenting the area's farming, methodist and mining history. It is becoming increasingly renowned for its genealogy resource and expertise.

Quite a small museum but well kept and extremely interesting. Many artefacts and fascinating displays. The chapel, which has been in continuous use since 1760, is not to be missed. The volunteer guide was a fund of information and never boring. Would hope to visit again. It is well worth the smlaa £3 entrance fee.

Fascinating place with lots to see and "hands on" experiences. Services are still held weekly in High House, the oldest purpose built Methodist chapel still in use. Car parking is behind the museum. Opening times are not very long being 2-5pm on certain days so best to enquire before visiting. A small admission charge makes this place a great visit,... More
