About Sublime Scotland
Sublime Scotland is a small family business which offers tailored private tours of 1-7 days, for up to four people. Tours are fun, relaxed and your guides are husband and wife, John and Susan, who are passionate about showing visitors around their country. If you have a group of 5-8 we can offer two vehicles for a truly luxurious experience. On a day tour you might visit the beautiful Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park or stunning Perthshire with the amazing Scone Palace. Longer trips explore the stunning sea lochs of the west coast, the mountains of the Highlands and the castles and gardens of the north. Each tour is individually designed with guests collected from anywhere in central Scotland. We travel in a top of the range Honda CRV or Ford Galaxy with tinted windows, leather seats and great sun roofs to show off the stunning mountain views.

Please read entire review. I want to first say I can’t fully give an accurate review of this tour guide because our trip was cancelled due to Coronavirus and how we were treated when the trip was cancelled is why I feel I should be writing the review. Background to our trip; March 31-April 11. NC-NY. JFK-Heathrow. London for 2 days. Train ride to Edinburgh and stay for 2 days. Pickup from tour guide, 3 day private tour across Scotland. Edinburgh for 1 day, train back to London. London for 2 days then back to JFK. NY-NC. This was a surprise anniversary trip for my wife, 5 years together and 1 year wedding anniversary. I had been planning this trip since 12/2018 and surprised her with it 10/2019. Reaching out to Susan was quite easy, she was very knowledgeable about the area and Outlander which is the type of tour I decided to do for us. I do feel she took over the planning after I gave her some things we wanted to see and added things I wasn’t really keen on seeing but my wife was happy with the itinerary so really that’s all that mattered. I made my payments to her in the form of deposit and then final payment through a company TransferWise which was easy enough to do. Now comes the terrible part of the trip. Coronavirus takes over the world and is a global pandemic, the US shuts down travel to the UK and we have to now be forced to cancel our entire trip. 5 Air BnB, 5 hotels, round trip airfare from NC to NY and NY to London, train from London to Scotland, a surprise replica of our wedding cake to be delivered to a hotel in Edinburgh, London Pass tickets, Hamilton the show tickets in London; ALL of these I have received 100% full refund on NON-REFUNDABLE tickets because who would think we would be having to cancel our 1 year anniversary trip? Travel insurance? Yeah I have it but it doesn’t cover global pandemics so I am out of luck with having to put a claim in. The ONE AND ONLY company I figured I wouldn’t have an issue with is Sublime Scotland who decided to not give me a full refund or even all of the price minus the $100 “cancellation fee”. I paid £1335 for the tour, we received £530 of that back. To say this is disappointing is an understatement; even more so is how I was responded to in the email with exact wording “ I hope you appreciate that this is a genuine offer which we do not need to make”. This was after telling me she would give us back £430 or give us a chance to move the trip to September 2021. I don’t know if we will have kids by then, where we will be in life at that point, it’s not possible for us to just say sure we can move everything. I can keep going on and on about how mad and upset I am from this company, but if you tell me your only going to give me less than half of the entire trip, why would I want to re-book a tour with you in September 2021 and know in the back of my mind how you conduct business? I’m good, I’ll find another tour guide if we do eventually get to make this trip. Make sure you know the booking and cancellation conditions, travel insurance won’t cover everything but in all seriousness make sure you know who your doing business with and I hope this helps with you booking in the future. We were Soooo excited to make this trip and I spent so much time and effort into keeping this a surprise for a year and a half and now it’s not even happening.

After 90 - five star reviews, your review is a massive disappointment to us. Firstly, I am very sad that you felt I took over the planning of your tour. Looking over the 50 or so e-mails we exchanged I see that you did ask us for further tour ideas during the year that this trip was kept a secret from your wife. I also recall the phone-call I made to you both when once again you agreed that you were both happy with the proposed itinerary. Involving our guests in the tour planning is something we are very proud of and which means we create, together, a perfect tailored tour for each and every group. Unlike an airline ticket, a significant proportion of the value of a tour comes from the planning and advice we offer before the tour is even underway. Your second major complaint is that we did not offer you a full refund. During this current Pandemic most tour operators, cruise liners and private tour companies are offering guests a re-scheduled date or a credit refund voucher for people who cannot select a future date for travel just yet. We offered to move your tour to any point up to September 2021, in keeping with industry practice. It was disappointing to us that you felt unable to take up that offer but we understood that you had plans to perhaps start a family. In contrast to other tour operators and as a gesture of goodwill (ignoring the impact this pandemic will have on our small business), we offered to share the risk with you and to refund half of the balance you had paid eight weeks earlier. We also waived the cancellation fee. I am truly sorry we will never have the chance to show you around Scotland as you can see from our previous reviews that we are very highly regarded by our guests and you would have had a wonderful tour.

Dear Susan and John, thank you for showing my parents and I around your beautiful Schotland. Sublime Schotland is definitely top-notch and we will certainly recommend you if friends would like to do a private tour! Thank you, John, for an amazing, stress free journey full of interesting stories and so many highlights, for being caring and attentive. Nothing was ever too much to ask, for example suggesting to switch the order of things to do, just to increase the possibility of staying dry (Neist Point :-) You have given us a dream holiday we will never forget!

Our first international adventure was in 1981… over the ensuing decades we were lucky to be able to do 3-week trips about every 2nd/3rd year… all planned and orchestrated by ourselves… most often traveling in-country by train, but also occasionally by car. We have loved every trip and count them amongst our most cherished memories! Fast forward to ages 65/75: the one place we’d always dreamed about but never visited was Scotland. We did our usual research, planning on visiting Glasgow/the Highlands/Edinburgh. For the Highlands, driving seemed essential – but – between the narrow roads and driving on the left – we felt we’d be so preoccupied (i.e., stressed!) that we’d miss a lot of the scenery. We’re not interested in tour groups of any kind, so we researched private drivers. OK… that can be pricey! But… we were only talking about 5 days – and so began the planning process. I was referred to Sublime Scotland, and started communicating with Susan Ross. The process continued over several weeks… culminating in a great itinerary! Nevertheless, we approached the time with a bit of trepidation… what if we all didn’t get along? Well… I am very happy to say the entire experience exceeded our expectations… perfect even in ways we didn’t expect! Susan was professional and thorough, and flexible – learning about ‘us’ every day and making additional/substitute recommendations as we went along. Her knowledge and love of Scotland were infectious! We enjoyed her company tremendously – it was truly like traveling with a friend! And because we were totally relaxed – we enjoyed even more everything Scotland has to offer. Susan and Sublime Scotland deserve more than 5 stars!!!

We just completed a wonderful 5-day tour with Susan, who is not only an excellent tour director, but is a delightful person to spend time with. She is extremely knowledgeable about Scotland and history, and is just a joy to travel with. The tour was tailored to our particular interests, and the pace was perfect - plenty of time to poke around if we wanted to and a nice variety of experiences and sights. We highly recommend Sublime Scotland, and feel as though we've made a new friend!

We recently did a three day trip with Sublime Scotland and we are beyond happy about the service we received. From the planning phase, Susan was very accommodating, down to the very last detail, even when we decided to change the itinerary completely. Susan was great at suggesting accommodations that suited our budget. Our guide and driver, John, could not have been more pleasant and easy going. John was super organized, though at the same time very relaxed and made us feel "at home". When we needed to stop for lunch, or pick up some unique gift items, he knew exactly where to go. The car we drove in was a DREAM. quiet, comfortable, spacious. It made a huge difference, since we've been in noisy or bumpy tour cars in the past and they quickly take their toll on your peaceful drive. John also give us a wonderful parting gifts (in addition to the cool aluminum water bottle we received at the beginning of our journey) before we said our goodbys. If you are planning a tr\ip to Scotland, please contact Susan at Sublime Scotland, you will not be sorry.
