Went to Pickering on train. Saw the castle and had a look around, was very interesting. Glad we did so, worth a hour to look around and only a short walk from town.

Pickering Castle is a 13th Century Motte and Bailey fortification. There are great views of the surrounding area from the keep at the top of the grassed mound. Look out for the ancient graffiti of previous visitors who etched their names and year of their visit into the tower wall staircase (now blocked off from the public). The castle is... More

Interesting ruins with great views over the surrounding area. Visiting this and other medieval constructions fills me with wounder as to how they managed to construct such imposing buildings. Castle and surrounding area maintained to English Heritage usual high standards.

Having visited Pickering many times and not going to the castle we decided to have a look. We walked up from the town and I was surprised how substantial the castle is. I always thought it would be a grassy mound but it has walls and a motte with fabulous views from the top. Extremely helpful staff who know their... More

This place is an ideal stopping point for on your way home or on your way to the coast! I'd suggest about 40-50 mins here, there is plenty to see! I would recommend this place greatly!

Final day of our holiday and no where was working out so on a whim decided on Pickering castle, and we were glad we did. Rachael who served us made the whole trip fantastic, from setting silly rules for my son like run around screaming whilst also stating not to climb on the walls, the castle ruins itself is a... Wonderful castle, originally from dark ages 1069 post conqueror, and there is a great story told as to how it's purpose, buildings and walls changed several times through its wood-stone medieval period. Views from the motte top were fabulous today, the steam train was observable in the valley below and you could see for a good 20 miles south west.... More

The reception hut doubles as a shop with what I glimpsed as standard stuff. The assistant was very pleasant and helpful - encouraging, too. I'd take the audio guide next time as I am sure it will provide much fascinating information about the place - it can't be that old & significant without having a story to tell. It was... More

Was not aware of the castle until recent holiday in the area. Stunning views from the top and a great example of motte and bailey construction.

Not my first visit to this great castle, but I always enjoy going there for a couple of hours, The views from the from the top of the motte are literally stunning, looking across the county for miles, especially on a clear day. There is a charge to enter, as it is managed by English Heritage but is free for... More
