About
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and education at its heart. Climb on-board a steam or heritage diesel train on one of the earliest and most historic lines. Experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. We will take you on a journey you can’t even imagine! Explore the Railway • Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the locomotive steam era. • A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film. • Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines! • Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. • Explore Levisham Station which is surrounded by the North York Moors.

- Navigator24276410 contributionsSanta special not very specialVisited the Santa Special 5 separate years now and I’m afraid the recent one was really disappointing. It’s gone up in price again but you get less no inclusive drink and mince pie on arrival as it used to and the entertainment on the train was no where near what it used to be. As described in a previous review, the elves shouted down a microphone which you couldn’t hear through the speakers properly. There were no games, entertainment or singing which used to create a good atmosphere. Basically took your money charged a fortune for rubbish coffee bundled you on the train, Santa worked his way down the carriage then back we went to the station. Santa was very good with the kids and the toy they got was good which is the only reason I didn’t leave a 1 star review. It seems the railway has become very commercial and no one really cares anymore. Just lost that ‘magical’ atmosphere which is sadVisited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 5 December 2022
- j2rerKingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom72 contributionsSanta not so special trainI’ve been on a few Santa trains with my grandchildren over the last 6 years and I know the world is a different place now but our trip today was poor. There seemed a lack of festive cheer, no mince pies and hot drinks as usual and a general lack of spirt . The journey was nothing special we didn’t sing any songs and what we did do was lost on young children, very disappointed. Shall look for an alternative next year. I think lessons have to be learnt . People want value for money and today I felt robbed.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 10 December 2022
- spike9 contributionsAn authentic experienceHad a really enjoyable Christmas pullman dining experience. The staff were excellent and the food was good and plenty of it. The Christmas decorations in the carriages were very well done as was the festive table layout - even the cracker jokes made us chuckle rather than groan! We didn’t expect these heritage carriages to be hot, so dressed appropriately. There was of course some steam heating - just like in the old days - and that took the chill off. I think we have all become too used to central heating! The sound of the steam engine and the excellent scenery made for an amazing experience. We’ll certainly be back next year!Thank you for a great review. We're very pleased to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your pullman experience with the NYMR. - Jo TTadcaster, United Kingdom5 contributionsDisappointingI’ve been on quite a few Santa trains but this was the worst. No mince pie and mulled wine for the grown ups or anything for the kids. Boo! No games for the kids as promised unless you count asking a few Christmas questions a game! The best thing about it was the build a soft toy dog but we could have bought that for 1/3 of the price. Disappointing 😩Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 23 December 2022
- alisonchattertonLondon, United Kingdom3 contributionsPricing policy/uninspiring sceneryI feel that charging £40 for one return trip is unfair when, for the same price, you get an annual pass. This discriminates against the tourist day-tripper who may not be in a position to return for further trips. £80 is a lot for a senior citizen couple for what is a relatively short train journey. We were also both disappointed that the journey was not particularly scenic - we were certainly expecting more from a train ride across the North Yorkshire Moors.Thank you for your review - we're sorry to hear that you don't like our new unlimited annual pass ticket. We do have a cheaper option of a £15 ticket which allows passengers to travel to up to two stations.Written 11 April 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2023
- MatthewH14Amersham, United Kingdom12 contributionsBusy, but a lovely routeVisited and did a return journey to Whitby. Train was VERY busy leaving. We had pre-booked online and had to select our outbound train for ‘capacity reasons’. However tickets were still being sold on the platform which led to a very busy train. Thankfully we found a seat but many people were standing. At £40 a head (appreciate this is unlimited for a year), you’d expect to be seated. That said, journey was lovely and scenic. We enjoyed it and would look to return on a quieter dayThank you for your review and for your understanding - we have had a very busy Easter. We'll look forward to seeing you when you return at a quieter time.Written 11 April 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 April 2023
- Sockbucket6 contributionsSteam fit for (only) a kingAs part of a holiday in North Yorkshire I planned a steam railway trip from Grosmont to Pickering. When I arrived at Grosmont I found that only the section between Whitby and Grosmont was steam. From Grosmont to Pickering was diesel, this was because of the recent dry weather and the fire risk. Fair enough, I accepted this. But I don't like diesels and went elsewhere (hence only 2 stars to be polite). However I was extremely annoyed when I heard that a few days later KIng Charles travelled behind Flying Scotsman in steam on the same section of track. Presumably the fire risk had disappeared for a royal trip. I was even more annoyed on returning home to North Norfolk to find that the North Norfolk Railway was still running steam trains despite similar weather and similar lineside fire risks (gorse, heather etc.)Thank you for your review. We can run steam engines on the Grosmont to Whitby line when it's dry as that section doesn't run through moorland. When the King visited the Flying Scotsman was assisted by a diesel engine at the rear, we had increased levels of fire patrols all along the line and a diesel engine followed behind to watch for any signs of fire. Obviously it is not possible to take these precautions for every train. Due to the recent rain we are now running steam again.Written 27 June 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Written 25 June 2023
- StephenAPIpswich, United Kingdom91 contributionsRelaxing and piicturesqueGreat visit and lovely staff. Went from Pickering to Whitby, disappointed that it was diesel for both journeys and didnt get to see a steam engine although we passed one in use. Thought it a little expensive at £45 each person as a tourist, the unimited use for a year is of little use if you live 300+ miles away. The journey was picturesque and the rail staff do a great job and no complaints at all and a great day out and well organised.Thank you for a lovely review. Without knowing when you travelled I can't comment on why your train was diesel hauled but it's possible that it could have been because of the dry weather and the risk of fire. We do sometimes run steam engines just in the stations or on the stretch from Grosmont to Whitby, which has less vegetation, at these times - so that could be what you saw. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your day out, despite the lack of steam, and we hope to see you again if you're in the area.Written 11 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Written 6 July 2023
- Bob MGravesend, United Kingdom683 contributionsGreat heritage railway. Very expensive. We were keen to spend a few hours on the railway, travelling return from Whitby, where we were staying, to Pickering. I logged on to the website to book tickets and was hit by the cost. £45 per adult. No concessions for pensioners. Having a fair amount of experience of other heritage railways this was exceptional. It put us off. We made do with filming the arrivals and departures at Whitby station.Thank you for your review - we're pleased to hear that you enjoyed filming our trains at Whitby Station. Our Annual Unlimited Ticket at £45 is actually only £3 more that our normal return ticket for the whole, 24 mile, line was last year. Once you have bought this ticket you can travel free on the line as much as you like for a year from the day of purchase.Written 18 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 July 2023
- sfmann106Colchester, United Kingdom920 contributionsIconic heritage line from Whitby to Pickering and backWe went on this iconic steam railway over 20 years ago now and in the late autumn, so we wanted to visit again to see if the experience is still as good as it was then, in particular as we'd seen it briefly featured in the latest Indiana Jones and Mission: Impossible films! We queued up to buy the tickets at Whitby (now the steam train goes from here, whereas before it was just from Grosmont) and waited on the platform while the engine was stoked up and got ready to roll. Not a cheap day out (£45 each) but this ticket does allow you to visit any time within the 12 months of buying your tickets, so would be good value if you live locally. We steamed out of Whitby station and made our way through the lovely countryside to stop at Grosmont station, where the engine had to be changed for a heritage diesel instead of our steam loco. Bit of a disappointment as the smell of diesel fumes wafting back up the track towards us wasn't quite the same as that of the steam loco, plus the whistle isn't quite the same as the diesel engine's! We were told that this had to be done because of the risk of fire from the steam loco when the weather was dry, so that was understandable, although not the same. We stopped briefly at Goathland (Harry Potter, the Railway Children, Heartbeat fame?) and on to Pickering, where we were able to stop (end of the line) and have a few hours of wandering round the lovely town streets, before embarking on the return journey. Just make sure you check your time tables for last train to Whitby (if travelling from there) as some stop at Grosmont as the last stop. Same diesel engine on the way back, changed at Grosmont, where it had to wait for 30 minutes for the national rail train out of Whitby to pass before returning to Whitby. Plenty of lovely countryside to enjoy but the heather wasn't out at this time of the year, so not as glorious as when we'd been before, so time your visit if you want a carpet of purple! Still, all in all a lovely day out.Thank you for a brilliant review - we're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your day out with the NYMR and hope to see you again.Written 18 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2023

What could have been an amazing, magical, memorable Christmas experience was absolutely ruined by the actions of ‘Santa’
To clarify we travelled on the 14:55 service from Pickering on Saturday 25th November
All started off amazing, wonderful atmosphere, great decorations, Eric Treacy looking fantastic, the funniest elves and then Santa appears……….
He asks my 6 year old what he wants, cuts him off after one item and proceeds to lecture my son about his listening.
This isn’t a ‘don’t forget to be good’ passing comment this is a full on lecture about not listening, needs to put his listening ears on etc etc. To the point I thought my son was going to cry!
Who on earth this man thinks he is going round lecturing small children on made up bad behaviour!
After the lecture there were no niceties that was it! Even if this was his approach about lecturing on behaviour when you can see the child infront of you is visibly shocked and upset would you not change tact or add something nice to the end.
I didn’t write this review straight away as I was so cross but even two days later I am seething at how this one man could ruin our sons Santa experience. We paid £150 as a family for some arrogant man dressed as Santa to ruin a 6 year olds day
I have emailed an official complaint to NYMR and I hope it is taken very seriously so no other families Christmas Experience is ruined by him.

I didn't really enjoy some aspects of the experience but that was almost entirely my fault. I should have read the blurb more closely! For some reason I thought it would be a more sedate experience rather than a (fairly short) children's disco. Nothing wrong with that, just not for me and my partner. Unfortunately, because some of the kids were a bit terrified by the experience and were screaming, I was glad the on-train experience was mercifully short. £25 maybe a bit steep but they do need to raise funds.
The best bit was actually waiting on the platform for the train to leave (free). Lights and steam - very atmospheric! The café on the station is very nice, and again, very atmospheric.

Visited the Light Spectacular- we were greeted in the rear car park by 3 lovely gentlemen who checked our booking info and gave us the wrist bands and shown up to the platform.
The train looked lovely all dressed in lights.
We climbed up and over to the other platform - there was a hefty queue for hot drinks, but we were told they were available on the train.
Had a quick explore of the station before finding our carriage and seats.
Comfortable booths, lots of leg room and space.
The voice over was entertaining throughout and the music choices were in the main lots of fun.
Would really have liked there to have been a couple of relatable kids songs so our daughter could have sung along too, but she danced regardless. We took our own glow sticks to add to the party atmosphere and handed a few out to kids on the train.
It’s the luck of the draw if you get a high energy carriage where everyone is willing to sing and dance, but regardless of others, we really enjoyed ourselves.
I was pleased of the discount code we’d used to pay reducing the cost from £75 for 3 people to £60, but it was still a costly experience.

I can reiterate what was said about the Light Spectacular. Good fun and didn’t think the prices on board were out of the way.
Good value for money and one is ensuring that the NYMR will run for many years.
Car park for the evening event was free. But it gets locked after the last train, so watch out.

I haven’t done the North York Moors railway for ages. Before going I looked on their website to book tickets. It was really clear that caters for disabled people went free. It is great that they do this and the website is really clear this also applies to parents who have disabled children. They expect you to bring some form of evidence which is fine and I made sure to take it with me. When I got to the ticket office on the day the person selling the tickets seemed to not know this is what they are telling parents online and said ‘all parents are their children’s carer’. That is of course completely true. It isn’t helpful when your child needs a lot more care than most children and will for their entire life. It also isn’t helpful if the website says really clearly what the policy is. It also wasn’t great to have to have that conversation in front of my daughter. It got sorted and I recognise many of the people supporting the railway work as a volunteers because they care. I also want to say what they offer to carers should be applauded. It just needs some awareness and thought about implementation.
That experience shouldn’t overshadow what was a really good day and my daughter loved being able to go on the train.

My family and I turned up early to travel on the 9:20 service from Pickering to Whitby having pre booked tickets In advance.
The station was extremely busy and staff told us they’d over booked for this service. When the train arrived it was a bit of a stampede and very badly organised.
We found ourselves on a first class carriage which according to the NYMR rules were not permitted to sit, due to having a small dog. We asked a member of staff who confirmed this so we made our way through the train unable to find any spare seat until we unfortunately had to leave. As we made our way onto the platform another member of staff told us we should have just sat In a first class compartment with our dog! Too late at this point as now all gone.
Undeterred we decided to wait for the next train to arrive, the 10:55 service to Grosmont. Having left home at 7:30am with two small children and a dog this wasn’t an idea start of our day!
We spoke to the ticket office to swap our tickets over to the next train and again we were advised that NYMR had over booked tickets, no apology.
Having waited 1 hour 30 minutes for the next train to arrived we were dismayed when it arrived with only 3 carriages!! One first class (which we weren’t permitted to sit in) one regular carriage and one goods carriage (to carry’s pushchairs/bikes on etc). The train, rather than stopping in the enclosed station stopped a little bit higher up the platform, by the time we arrived the train was once again full!
A conductor stood outside the now full train made some quip about our dog and if he was travelling, my wife said something along the lines of… I know it’s not your fault but we’ve been here since 8:45am and have been unable to travel on two trains due to NYMR over selling tickets and we were a bit disappointed (we really aren’t ones for complaining). The conductor was very passive aggressive and told us “just because you have a ticket doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to travel” and if we didn’t like it “go speak to the engine drive” in a very condescending tone. No apology, no empathy, nothing, I get the feeling families aren’t particularly welcome or valued.
We then decided enough was enough and we’d simply travel home again.
We assume the train was only running 3 carriages (usually they run 6 or 7) as NYMR run a light spectacular later that day and I can only assume they were preparing the carriages for that service. Considering it’s half term holidays and NYMR are selling seats they can’t actually offer seems pretty poor.
My thoughts on this experience is all NYMR want is your money.
The customer service is terrible, they seem to have several members of staff on the platform who love blowing whistles and playing trains, but if you actually need help or require a level of service at best you get a shrug of the shoulders.

So disappointing how can you only have 5 coaches when you’re running such an iconic engine like Sir Nigel Gresley on his last running day . People rammed on to the train . Disgraceful, operational reason won’t cut it!!!
I hope you manage to appoint a proper new CEO from outside the railway to come in and sort it out. They will need with a full understanding of steam engines on this heritage railway and the importance of the views and experience of volunteers and staff. .

What is the cost for seniors for a return ticket from Whitby to Pickering?
holidaymanWashington
Washington, UK2,108 contributions
There are no discounts for seniors. There is one standard ticket price for a full line return, which is £45. This allows unlimited travel for the following 12 months, with the exception of special events and Pullman dining trains. You can also hop on and off at any station between Whitby and Pickering. This price is only £3 more expensive than the normal return fare last year and you can get a whole year's travel for that price.

Do I take it that the Bronze does not run every day for passengers who don't want to eat or drink.

The bronze timetable runs every day as advertised on the website. It is only the lunchtime train, marked with a capital M that is a Pullman dining train and that is only on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the lunchtime train service runs as a normal train for anybody to use. Hope that clarifies things for you.

There is a website but it’s not user friendly, so we brought our tickets from the box office in Whitby who were extremely helpful. We had a great time, I hope you do too.

Why has the rare gone up so much since the reviews?
holidaymanWashington
Washington, UK2,108 contributions
I take it that you mean why has the fare gone up. Well you could write to Chris Price, at their registered office in Pickering but I suspect that it is much the same reason as everything else has gone up in general. Twenty four miles of railway track, plus all the stations, electricity, employment costs, coal, oil, maintenance of track, carriages and locomotives plus a huge number of other expenses, encountered in running such a large institution, doesn't come cheap. It used to cost six and a half million pounds per year to run. I suspect that this figure has increased by as much as another million at present. If you don't want anything fancy, you can still get reasonably priced return tickets to anywhere on the line and if you go the whole hog from Pickering to Whitby or vice versa, that a 48 mile round trip by steam, if you choose the right time. It still represents good value and helps towards keeping this magnificent railway going, for future generations.
Are there concessions for oaps on Friday from Pickering to goathland
holidaymanWashington
Washington, UK2,108 contributions
The short answer is NO. NYMR don't have concessionary fares for Senior Citizens. This Friday 03 June is peak travel and return fare from Pickering to Goathland is £21.50 or the single fare is £12.90. It would be slightly cheaper if you went off-peak, 6-30 June and 1-22 July. The only big concessions are for members, who get a 50% reduction in ticket price but of course, you have to pay for the membership. If you plan to travel a lot or want to support the railway, membership would be worthwhile. If you are just travelling on a one off basis, the standard line ticket rates are best. Hope that helps. All info is available on their website.

I'm picking my blue dots buying online. Can anyone recommend a carriage? Some have empty spaces. Is it a kitchen or something? I'd like to be not hemmed in by people but also don't want to sit where its noisy and busy.
