About
Opened in 1897, this magnificent example of Victorian architecture stands proudly on Morecambe seafront. A Grade II* listed building, it has played host to many stars of stage and screen, including Laurence Olivier and has been the setting for both TV dramas and documentaries. The architects were the Manchester firm of Mangnall and Littlewood. Once you enter into the foyer you will see the grand marble staircases which once would have transported the paying customer to the upper level of the dress circle and also allowed them to enter the now long gone ballroom. In their heyday these buildings could have accommodated over 7000 people which included 2000 dancers. The theatre is operated and run by a Charitable Trust and volunteers who's sole aim is to restore the building and make it a usable space for generations to come. Theatre tours are available and can be booked online. Table service Cafe.

Beautiful building
Oct 2020 • Couples
Wandering around (socially distant) admiring building and all the renovation work that has been undertaken. Fantastic building and cant wait to return next year. Enjoyed a nice cuppa whilst taking it all in. We had hoped to visit earlier in the year but dont live local and our holiday was cancelled due to covid.

A magical trip back in time!
Aug 2020 • Couples
Fantastic behind the scenes tour of the Winter Garden. Unique opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and faded glory of the music Hall and variety era. Marvel at the architecture, the stained glass and tiles. So much left just as it would have been! Can't recommend it highly enough and one of the many reasons I LOVE Morecambe!

A Jewel in Morecambe's Crown
Jul 2020 • Friends
This gem is a must see. As soon as you walk in you are transported through its 120 years, its walls oosing stories from Victorian Variety shows to Shawaddywaddy concerts 100 years later.

It is clear to see the passion from the volunteers and Friends who have campaigned relentlessly for its survival and they deserve every bit of support to bring this rough diamond back to its former sparkling vibrant glory.

My parents' in law are born and bred Morecambe and I am fascinated by all things old Morecambe. I have followed WG progress through Garry's posts on Facebook and will become a Friend and Sponsor a Chair. I would dearly love to help volunteer if I was local, I am from the South and work in Soho, if this was in Soho I would be volunteering at every opportunity!

Also, just want to say, we enjoyed a nice cuppa and flapjack from the cafe, do support it, during these Covid times instead of crockery they use Vegware cups, fully compostable! Now if they can do it why can't the big Costa, Pret et al guys use them? Well done WG for being on it on the sustainable front too!

Icon of a Building!
Aug 2019 • Solo
I was lucky enough to see this icon of a building open as a young lad and remember it being hectic with people everywhere and with quite a vibrant atmosphere . I've loved this building since I was a young lad as it seems to draw you in somehow. I also went into the building when it had been shut for many a year and saw the state the grand old building was in. Missing floorboards everywhere and in general quite a state. Was very sad to see as a young lad. When I was older I also visited with my mum where we both sponsored a "floorboard". We had lunch in the cafe at the front of the building too. I always said to my mum I can't wait for the day to see the building back to its former glory standing proud on Morecambes gorgeous promenade, this my mum said would never happen. I put her straight saying it would haha! The volunteers are doing a cracking job and if it wasn't for all the hard work and commitment the building would be left to rot. Fortunately they are all committed to getting this building back to its former glory and I can't praise all of them enough for all their hard work and effort. Also since Vanessa Toulmin joined the team things seem to be progressing so fast with funding and grants being given getting the building one step further on with its regeneration! Splendid effort from all involved and if I lived nearer I'd gladly offer my services in a voluntary basis. If you are visiting the gorgeous town of Morecambe and taking in the lovely surroundings of the bay, grab yourself some fish and chips a Mr Whippy and ensure you visit this icon of a building taking in all the beauty it has to offer. Become a friend if you can or even sponsor a chair to help in the renovation process of this truly gorgeous place.

December 2019 visit
Dec 2019
I was here for the Soultrain Xmas Party. There is a car park close by. This place was like a big warehouse, people kept there coats on in here, as it was that cold. The sound system was not very good. The toilets were outside.

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately the heating system is a temporary one and within the next few months a programme of major works will begin due to successful funding applications. The building is hired out and the sound system would have been supplied by the promoter hiring the theatre. The outside toilets are temporary and we have permanent toilets and disabled and baby access ones within the theatre. I would hope that you would visit us again in the future and see the improvements that are ongoing.

Fascinating to see the ongoing work
Sep 2019 • Couples
Was lucky to be able to view the building through the Heritage Open days scheme. Taken backstage and even on the stage. Some beautiful tiles, stained glass and 1930’s light fittings. Cafe and bar on site. Great to see the preservation work ongoing. Do go and visit a fascinating part of Morecambe’s history.

Fascinating tour of the theatre
Sep 2019
Went along today, having previously just seen the auditorium and the bar, and thoroughly enjoyed the tour. (I'll be going again before they close for the winter.) You can't help but be impressed by its former grandeur and our tour guide gave us plenty of information about the history of the building, helping us imagine it in days gone by. I found it particularly moving stood in the circle looking down at the stage and thinking of all the performers, back stage and front of house staff and, of course, members of the audience that have have had associations with this wonderful theatre.

Vintage Visit
Aug 2019 • Couples
If in Morecambe and it’s open (Sundays) I do pop in to see how the restoration is going and have always meant to do the heritage tour and hear more...well yesterday I did and it was fantastic! Prof Vanessa Tolman who now leads the project was so informative interesting and passionate about this wonderful old theatre. To get behind the scenes, on the stage and up to the gods for a different view of the auditorium was great but there’s so much more to see and appreciate. The views of Morecambe Bay from a few very different angles was breathtaking and we really got to appreciate why this lovely old theatre is being rescued...adapting its many spaces for use today is going to be a challenge but for now it was great to see so many traces of the past and get up really close to that amazing ceiling! I really recommend this tour and it’s only £6...great value!

On behalf of all the volunteers involved in the restoration of the building, thank you for your positive comments. With recent change's in administraion, we are forging ahead with improvements through grants and funding with our next major project, heating. This will allow us to be a more attractive venue for all year round usage.
